In recent times, the COVID-19 pandemic has destroyed the age-old habit of shaking hands. It is most widely used as a greeting, but when did shaking hands become the standard greeting
The handshake dates all the way back to the 9th century BC. King Shalmanesar III ruled over Assyria, an empire(帝国) of the ancient Middle East. Archaeologists(考古学家) found a throne base from that time. It shows two people holding hands. In the 5th century BC, in Greece, this was a symbol of peace, showing that neither person carried a weapon. The handshake also makes an appearance in Homer's ancient poem, the lliad (荷马史诗). In it, two characters “shook each other's hands".
However, these handshakes were not used as greetings. The earliest reference to a handshake greeting is in the 16th century novels by French writer Francois Rabelais, says Dutch sociologist Herman Roodenburg.
Even so, the most widely -accepted theory about the handshake's origin is that it survived through a group called the Quakers, who were devoted to equality and peace. As the movement spread, so did the handshake, eventually becoming standard among the working class in the mid-1700s.
However, this was not the case everywhere, according to Roodenburg. Some French people described it as a vulgar(平民) English greeting, so many maintained(维持)“la bise", the traditional peck(轻吻) on two cheeks, which was widely used until the COVID-19 outbreak. In many countries, people have started touching elbows or ankles to greet each other instead of shaking hands, as this is believed to be safer.

Exams are a fact of school life for most people. Almost everyone worries about them and feels stressed, although they have prepared well.
A little stress caused by the exams is useful as it can sharpen your mind and motivate(激发)you to do well. But too much stress can stop you working to the best of your abilities, so its important not to let it get out of control. Here are some ideas to help you.
The keys to being prepared for exams and avoiding unnecessary exam stress are knowing what you need to know, planning and preparing for your revision (复习), and giving yourself enough time to do it.
If you can, find a copy of the syllabus for each subject. This tells you what you need to know and gives you the topics for revision.
Make a week-by-week revision timetable chart to display in your work space. Include the topics you need to cover for each subject.
About 12 weeks before your first exam, record the dates and times for each of your exams in your planner or diary and make a copy to put on your wall at home.
During your exam period you want your brain to work at its very best, so build in relaxation time before bed, avoid late night revision sessions and try to go to bed early so you get enough sleep. If panic (惊慌) starts to creep in, try to replace your negative thoughts with more positive (积极的) ones, such as 'It's going to be OK If you have difficulty answering a question, leave it and move on to the next one—don't spend time tying yourself in mental (思想上的) knots over each question.
You are not alone while dealing with the stress. Call psychological (心理的) hotline to share your worries and get help from others going through the same experience. Remember that there is life after exams. Things may feel stressful right now, but it won't last forever. And then the rest of your life will still be there.

Homestays are becoming more and more popular, and people around the world are offering their homes as hotels. Homestays offer cheap places to stay, and the chance for guests to see the area like a local. They are very popular with people who want to stay in another country to stud or on holiday. We asked three families who run homestays to tell us about where they live.
The Atal family
Our family home is in a small village in the north of Pakistan, in the Himalayan mountains The village is quite small and very quiet. The mountains are extremely beautiful. You can go for long walks and swim in the rivers but there are no shops, cinemas or cafes.
Kate and Julian Foxton
Our two-bed house is by the sea in the south-west of England. It is about five minutes' drive to the nearest village of Portreath. There are lots of beaches, rivers and forests and it is very quiet We spend a lot of time reading books, watching films and going for walks. Our area is great for spors like surfing, kayaking and mountain biking. However, the houses here are expensive, which can be a problem for local people. There are no buses or trains here, so it can be difficult to get around without a car。
Chafic and Aline Halwany
Our home is near the center of Beirut, Lebanon, one of the largest cities in the Middle East There are lots of cafes and restaurants, which open late at night. We love it here because it's so friendly and you can always find what you need—lots of people come to stay to learn Arabic and French. However, it can be noisy at night, and there is quite a lot of traffic during the day.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for many people. Healthy eating is really important. How can you have a healthy diet? Here are five tips that are worth putting into use in your daily life.
Eat less animal fat. The kind of fat in your diet really has to do with heart disease. If you're a red meat lover, don't choose the animal meat with much fat. When you're shopping for milk products like cheese and yogurt, choose those with less or no fat. And remember to use plant oils instead of butter in cooking.
Choose fruits or vegetables. Either of them can provide a great number of good things for your body. If you are afraid of too many calories, focus more on vegetables since they usually have less sugar than fruits do. Set a goal to eat one more serving than you do now! Then try to have five servings a day.
Choose the natural first. Nature provides important things like fiber in foods to meet the needs of your body. There are also man-made foods to support your body with these important things. For example, some biscuits are advertised as rich in fiber. But do remember: nature provides the best.
Pick fresh foods more. Follow the saying "If it's grown, eat it "Simply prepared fresh food is always the best choice. Research shows that more than seventy-five percent of salt you eat is from boxed, bagged and specially prepared dried or frozen food. What's worse, most of the bad fats which you need to avoid are also from them.
Control your food size. You should not only think about what you eat, but also how much you eat. Even the calories from healthy food can add up fast. So try using smaller plates and bowls, to fool your eyes as if you're "seeing" a large part and add the pleasure of eating "the whole thing".
Remember healthy eating is a long-term project, you need to follow the tips over time, not daily. Then your healthy diet will certainly support a healthy heart.

More than 60 per cent of children and teens do not get enough sleep, which can put their health at risk, according to a report by the Chinese Sleep Research Society.
Nearly 63 per cent of Chinese youths ages 6 to 17 sleep less than eight hours a day, according to the report. Among 13 to 17-year-olds the number is more than 81 per cent. The report was based on a survey at the end of last year and in January. It covered nearly 70, 000 children and teens ages 6 to 17 all over China.
The report found that two top causes influenced students' sleep. From Monday to Thursday, 64 per cent of the group would still be busy with their homework after 11 p.m.. More than 4l per cent of children and teenagers who sleep too little use computers and mobile phones.
The survey also showed that good sleep makes study effective(有效的). Some students who sleep longer generally finish homework in two to three hours. Some other students may require four to six hours because they sleep less. Zhao Zhongxin, a professor studying sleep disorders, said, "Sleep helps growth, protects the brain and makes the immune system(免疫系统) better. Long-term loss of sleep will bring risks of disease and cause lasting health damage."
Some specialists suggested that local education authorities all over China take action to help students get more sleep, including putting off the start of morning classes by half an hour.

Cars powered by gasoline were sold for many years before hybrid vehicles that use gasoline, electricity, and solar energy, Car companies are now making cars that are fully powered by electricity only. How do these electric cars measure up to (符合标准) traditional gasoline cars
Electric and gasoline vehicles look similar on the outside. They have very different parts under their hoods. though. Electric cars have one main moving part: the motor. But gas cars literally have hundreds of parts, often requiring frequent maintenance (保养) Having fewer parts makes the electric car cheaper to maintain and less likely to have mechanical problems.
Electric vehicles are energy efficient, also making them cheaper to operate. It costs about $1. 00 to travel 43 miles in an electric car, which is a clear contrast to a gas car, which costs about $1. 25 to go 18 miles. Basically, an electric car can go twice as far as a gas car for the same price.
Electric vehicles do not have tailpipe emissions, making them more friendly to the environment, too.
While some details make electric cars seem attractive, other details aren't as favorable. For example, some electric cars can travel only 60 to 120 miles on a full charge (充电). Most gas cars can drive hundreds of miles on a full tank.
An electric car has to stop more often to get recharged. Therefore, a gas car would be a better option (选择) if you have far to drive. And electric cars aren't as convenient (方便的) to power up as gas cars are. There are plenty of gas stations, but not many charging stations for electric cars. Then, once an electric car reaches a charging station, it can take up to six hours to charge.
There are certainly benefits to both electric cars and gasoline cars. It's good to know that there is an option.
Electric cars vs Gasoline cars
Introduction With the appearance of electric cars, people wonder whether electric cars can achieve the 1. standards as gasoline cars.
Similarity Electric cars and gasoline cars look similar on the outside.
 2. Electric cars ● Having fewer parts reduces the 3. of their maintenance and the 4. of having mechanical problems. ● 5. with gasoline cars, electric cars are more energy-saving, making them cheaper to operate. ● Having no tailpipe emissions, they are more environmentally 6. . ● It 7. more time for electric cars to get charged. Gasoline cars ● Gas cars can cover a 8. distance on a full tank than electric cars on a full charge. ● Gas cars are more 9. to power up.
Conclusion Both electric cars and gasoline cars have their own benefits. which provides people with a 10. .

Traveling to Lake Tahoe(塔霍湖) during winter is really fun. Here are some tips for you.
The first thing you should do is to bring at least three layers(层) of clothing. If you don't, you'll freeze!
You should also go skiing or snowboarding for at least one day. If you don't, your trip to Tahoe will be a waste. Otherwise, there is just baby stuff(东西) like sledding(滑雪橇), snowball fights, or tubing(滑雪圈). Would you want to do these for your stay at Tahoe
Also, you should visit Tahoe for at least three days. If you don't, what's the point You may have to drive three hours and all you get is a day of skiing and a day of playing in the snow. It would be a waste of time and money, not worth it. But if you stay for at least three days (two nights), then at least you will enjoy two days of skiing and a day of playing in the snow.
Also, here are some things you shouldn't do at Lake Tahoe.
First, don't drive on the highway when it's snowing. The highway has endless traffic and it will be boring to drive.
My second advice would be not to buy ski resort(度假村) food. Last time I tried a ski resort's fish and chips, the fish and chips tasted like cement(水泥). You can buy some snacks at Costco or some other supermarket near your hotel.
My last warning is to be careful when you ski by yourself. Even if you know how to ski, you still could fall down, get injured, or maybe even die. Millions of people get injured every year when skiing or snowboarding.
  1. on visiting Lake Tahoe
The do's Remember to bring 2. clothes, or you'll freeze.

Have you heard of the word "hygge"(小确幸) It's Danish, representing a lifestyle practiced by Danish people.
There is no English word for the exact meaning of "hygge", according to Oxford Dictionaries. It might be translated to "comfort" in English, but it is more than that.
Enjoying beautiful music or having a movie night is hygge. Lighting candles or making real tea in china cups-that's hygge too. There's nothing more hygge than sitting around a table with your family or friends, discussing the big and small things in life. Hygge pays attention to making ordinary daily activities special or meaningful, according to the BBC.
For Danish people, hygge is a way of fighting the cold winter, although it doesn't have to be a winter-only thing. In Denmark, there can be up to 17 hours of darkness per day in winter, and the average temperature is around 0℃, according to the BBC. As a result, people spend more time indoors and relax themselves.
Now the idea of hygge is traveling abroad and becoming fashionable in some other countries too. In the United Kingdom and the United States, there are more and more hygge-themed cookbooks and lifestyle guides, as well as Danish restaurants, cafes and bars.
"The rest of the world seems to be slowly waking up to what Danes (丹麦人) have been wise to for ages," Helen Russell, author of The Year of Living Danishly, told the BBC.

One evening, Zhang Luyang was working on her math homework. The 12-year-old girl from Sichuan opened the Tik Tok, known as Douyin, to watch some short videos. She just wanted to take a short break, but half an hour later, she was still watching short videos.
Zhang is one of many teenagers who enjoy watching short videos on apps like Douyin. The videos typically last from 15 seconds to 5 minutes. According to a survey by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, 20 percent of teenagers watch short videos during whatever free time they have. About 10 percent check short video apps several times a day.
Sun Zhenyao, a 14-year-old boy from Anhui, says he likes short videos because they are interesting. "It's the perfect thing to do when I want to kill small amounts of time," he said.
Zhang says she learns a lot by watching short videos. She follows a Chinese vlogger living in the US on Douyin. The vlogger does funny things, like selling pancakes on the street and inviting foreigners to watch The Wandering Earth, she said, "His videos teach me about cultural differences."
However, Zhang and Sun also say they sometimes waste too much time watching short videos. Apps like Douyin and Kuaishou have features that prevent users from watching videos for too long. Users can use "teen mode", which sets 40 minutes a day for watching short videos. Sun says this has helped him cut down the amount of time he spends watching videos.

Two sessions was held from May21st to May 28th in Beijing this year. Students are not CPPCC members, but they have a chance as model members to share their proposals (提案) in CPPCC.
Cui Jun, 15, Chengdu
I think senior high schools should have the right to hold independent recruitment (自主招生). At present, students are being picked by schools according to their scores in the senior high school entrance exam. This is mainly because the government wants students to have equal education.
But I believe independent recruitment should still be allowed. If an excellent student does poorly in the entrance exam, what can he do if there are no other exams offered by schools This is unfair for such students. Their future should not be decided by only one exam.
Liu Shiqi, 13, Shanghai
There should be more PE classes for students who want more exercise. PE classes have become shorter in many schools, including mine.
For example, we can only go to the playground after class. It takes about 10 minutes or even more to go downstairs and upstairs. During rainy seasons, especially in spring, we aren't able to exercise outside. And in winter, smog is so heavy that most outdoor classes have to be cancelled.
I think schools should provide students with more exercise, when PE classes can mostly be guaranteed (保证) to be outdoors.
Yan Ruiqi, 16, Shenzhen
I think the government should provide disabled people with greater access(通道) to public transportation. If so, they can get around more conveniently by themselves.
For example, subways and buses should be fully accessible to wheelchair users. Taxis should specially provide services for disabled passengers.
Last but not least, traffic lights should make a sound when they turn red or green so that blind people know when it's safe to cross.
One participant said "As model members, we found social problems through proposals and discussions. We discovered our responsibility(责任) for building a better society. It encourages us to care more about the society."

Would you like to be comfortable talking to other people Holding conversations may help. Holding conversations may not seem like a skill. After all, everyone talks to other people frequently. But talking to new people makes many people nervous.
Here are some ways to make conversations more fun and less awkward.
Body language
As strange as it may seem, much communication happens without any words. The way you stand and act tells people a lot about you. When you're talking with someone, stand up straight and look them in the eye. This shows your confidence. And if you're nervous, acting like you aren't can help you feel better. When you're listening, look at the other person. Lean forward to show that you're interested in what they're saying.
Back and forth
A good conversation is not a speech, which means that both people need to participate. If you're doing all the talking, pause to allow the other person to speak. If they don't say anything, try asking them a question.
Questions can also help if you're struggling (挣扎) to think what to say. Maybe they'll say something you know or you can reply to. When you ask questions, try to think of open-ended ones. That means questions where the answer is more than just "yes" or “no”. Open-ended questions in English usually start with who, what, when, where and why.
Don't fear silence.
Don't feel worried or frightened if the conversation has quiet moments. Every conversation has some. Treat them as chances to change the subject to something you're interested in. You could also comment on (评论) something you've done recently. Or you can ask a question about the other person.
So if you're shy, be brave, ask a question, and start a conversation. As with any skill, you will improve on holding conversations with time.
Learn to be 1. talking to others
Introduction Everyone needs to talk to others often. But talking to new people makes many people nervous. Holding conversations may be of some 2. to you.
