Red packets, another saying for money in Chinese culture, originally referred to money sent to children on the first day of Lunar New Year. The money is called ya sui qian, or lucky money. In traditional Chinese culture, it was believed that children were vulnerable to evil spirits (容易受到鬼怪的侵害) and children could use money to bribe (贿赂) those spirits to stay safe and live long. So people took giving children money as a blessing.
The earliest lucky money appeared in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD). During that period lucky money was not everyday paper money but was made of coins with lucky Chinese characters and animals on the them.
In the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), there were two kinds of "red packets". One had coins with red strings and was put at the foot of children's beds. The other was more like modern red packets. In Yan Jing Sui Shi Ji, a book that records traditional folk customs in Beijing from the Qing Dynasty, parents wrapped money with red paper and put it under children's pillows (枕头).

One windy spring day, I observed young people having fun using the wind to fly their kites. Different coloured and sized kites filled the skies like beautiful birds flying excitedly above the earth. As the strong winds blew against the kites, a string kept them in check.
Instead of blowing away with the wind, they rose against it to achieve great heights. They shook and pulled, but the controlling string and the clumsy tail kept them in tow (牵引), facing upward and against the wind. As the kites struggled against the string, they seemed to say, "Let me go! Let me go! I want to be free!" They flew beautifully even as they fought the forced restriction (约束) of the string. Finally, one of the kites succeeded in breaking loose. "Free at last," it seemed to say. "Free to fly with the wind."
Yet freedom from control simply relied on the wind. It flew ugly to the ground and landed in the weeds and the string was against a dead bush. "Free at last". Free to lie powerless in the dirt, to be blown helplessly along the ground, and to settle down lifeless against the roadside.
How much like kites we sometimes are! Let us each rise to the great heights, recognizing that some of the rules we are not satisfied with are actually what helps us climb and achieve.

It's hard to keep coffee or tea warm, especially in winter. But this smart mug from USA company Ember Technologies can solve this problem. The mug is stainless steel (不锈钢) inside and white ceramic (陶瓷) outside. There is an app for the mug that allows people to set the mug to a certain temperature between 48℃ and 62℃. Then, the mug keeps your coffee or tea at that temperature for about an hour or even longer.
Social robot Jibo, a robot made by US company Jibo Inc, can talk to you. With a big, round head and a big body, Jibo looks like a cartoon character. As soon as you say, "Hey, Jibo," it dances and turns to face you. When it talks to you, it moves its head and body to communicate with you. Although it has no eyes or mouth, Jibo uses emojis (表情包) such as a smile icon, to show feelings. All the features make it seem like a real human. Everybody hates rats. But rats may soon be man's new good friend.
What happens after an earthquake We send in rescue dogs. Why Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rats brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. "Robots' noses don't work well when there are other smells around rats are good at that." Rats can also see in the dark, they are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!
The "rat project" is not finished, but a scientist says, "It would be great. A rat could get into spaces we couldn't get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe." Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).

The weather is getting hotter and you'll be getting thirstier playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you pour down your throat. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health.
There are plenty of so-called energy drinks on the market. Most of them have an attractive color and cool name. Their nutrition lists also contains various things from vitamins to ginseng (人参). Sounds great!
But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine. These drinks are typically aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players.
Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much. Caffeine raises your heartbeat. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited their use. The amount of caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as high as in a strong cup of coffee or strong tea.
Research by Australian scientists has found that many teenagers are affected by caffeine. The results of their survey show that 27 percent of boys aged 8~12 take in more caffeine than their parents.
There are potential (潜在的) health risks linked to energy drinks. Just one can of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart attacks.

Alfredo Moser is a Brazilian worker who is skilled at repairing machines. His wife says her husband has always been handy at home and made tables and chairs. Alfredo has invented a way of lighting his house during the day without electricity.
He has been using plastic bottles filled up with water and a little bleach (漂白剂) to provide dark rooms with light for many years. And the idea has now spread across the world. It is predicted that his lighting system, which works using refraction (折射) of the sunlight, will be fitted in over a million homes by the end of this year.
Alfredo used normal plastic drinks bottles that are often thrown away. The secret of the water in the bottles is the bleach added to water, which stops it turning green in the sunlight. Mr. Moser drills a hole in a roof tile and then pushes the bottle in from below, keeping the bottle in place with polyester resin (聚酯树脂). Depending on the strength of sunlight, the light fills his home, and the bottles are just like electric bulbs of between 40 and 60 watts.
Alfredo came up with the idea for his "Moser light" during one of the blackouts in Brazil in 2002. He said only factories had power in his home city, in southern Brazil during the energy shortage.

The First Robotics Competition (FRC) was held in Shenzhen. A total of 35 high-school student teams from China, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Poland and other countries joined the two-day contest with their hand-crafted robots.
The FRC is a world-class robotics competition that was first launched in the United States in 1989. It encourages students to improve their hands-on skills and creative capabilities.
There are strict rules, limited resources and an intense six-week time limit before the competition. Teams of student should raise money, design a team brand and improve their teamwork skills, as well as build industrial-size robots to compete. The rules of the game include two groups, and each group has three teams. The group with the highest score wins the game.
The seven teams who won the top prizes in the FRC Shenzhen Regional will take part in the First Championship to be held in the United States next month.
Yin Shifei, secretary general, said the competition not only enables students to improve their programming, decision-making and problem-solving skills, but also encourages them to cooperate and share with other people.
According to Yin, a Shenzhen team invited over 40 left-behind children to the city to watch the FRC game because they wanted to make education more equitable. Mr. Guo is a teacher from Xi'an. He asked his students to hand in their homework through a QR code. "We spent an hour or two in class learning how to generate (使产生) the codes, and in the end everything gets easier," said Guo. "When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat. Then, each student makes his own QR code and gives it to me. So I can check their homework everywhere using my computer or telephone."
The QR codes can be sent to Mr. Guo by email, QQ or WeChat. When Guo scans his students' QR codes, their homework appears on his phone. He finds that their homework becomes more creative, with many pictures, music and even videos.
Guo's students like the new way and think it is interesting. "We are living in the information age. Many students like to work with computers, which makes learning more fun." said Tingting, a student of Guo's.
"The paper is not easy to keep, but the code is easy to keep and share." Guo said. "It is worth trying to use new technology in education. Education itself is a kind of creation. I don't want my students to fall behind the times."
However, some parents are worried. They are afraid that their children will spend too much time on computer and less time communicating with teachers. But in fact, it's unnecessary. Students still need to loop up information in books and write it down when they do their homework. They only use the code when they hand in their homework, which doesn't take them too much time. Many kids help out around the house with chores such as emptying the dishwasher, putting laundry away, and taking out the trash. In exchange, some kids get allowances (补贴) or other rewards such as extra computer time.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton, a parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return. "Running any kind of household is a team effort," Susie said. "A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and how they are going to keep it looking like what everyone wants it to be."
Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other rewards motivates kids to do chores, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also new applications that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed (兑取) either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in for real-life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall. "Our goal is to encourage kids to earn rewards," says Chris Bergman, the founder of ChoreMonster. "Kids need positive reinforcement (强化) to help motivate them."
What do you think Should kids be rewarded for doing chores Or should kids help out around their house without getting anything in return
Write a 200●word response. Send it to tfkasks4you@. Your response may be published in a future issue of Time For Kids. Please include your grade and contact information of your parents or teacher if you want your response to be published. The deadline for responding is February 18.

It is reported that some developed countries have shipped broken parts of computers to China. Last month Hong Kong officers found 131,000 kilograms of broken computers. TVs and phones sent from Japan.
Things like these are called electronic waste, or e-waste. Dealing with them is not an easy job. Every time an old computer breaks down, it needs to be dealt with safely. What is worse, at present, broken computer parts are usually buried. It may be hundreds of years before they really go in the earth.
