Taking a driverless bus or subway line is not surprising nowadays.
According to the report of China Daily last year, a driverless subway line named Yanfang Line began trial (试运行) runs in Beijing. It had planned to welcome passengers by the end of 2017. The train is the Chinese mainland's first driverless subway car.
The 16.6-km line connects Beijing's Yanshan and Fangshan areas. It has 960 seats and a top speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
According to Xinhua, the train is completely automatic. Technicians can start, stop and even watch it all by remote control.
However, is it completely safe
Jiang Xin is the head technician of the project. He told Xinhua that the driverless train actually runs more safely compared with the trains that humans drive.
According to Jiang, human error has caused many train accidents. Drivers could suddenly become tired or ill. A driverless train can help avoid these problems.
"The train pulls the brake (刹车) if the train runs off the track or hits any obstacle (障碍)," Jiang said.
Driverless trains are nothing new. They have been used across the world, from Japan to Europe, since the 1960s. London Underground's Victoria line is the world's first automatic subway line. It opened in 1967, but there was still a driver who was on duty at the time.

Full moon nights always seem a little scary. Is there any reason for this Well, it didn't come from nowhere—a new study has found that full moons really can cause restless nights.
To test the moon's effect on humans, a research team in Switzerland studies the sleep of 33 volunteers. In their sleep lab, there were no windows, or any other way of telling whether the moon was full outside. The researchers watched their brain activity, eye movements and hormone (荷尔蒙) levels.
Test results showed that on nights closer to a full moon, the volunteers' brain activity during deep sleep dropped by 30 percent. On these nights the volunteers also took about 5 minutes longer to fall asleep and slept for 20 minutes less. Their levels of the hormone that helps control sleep cycles (周期) also dropped.
So what's the cause of the full moon's unique power
According to Professor Christian Cajochen of Basel University in Switzerland, "the effect may have something to do with old times when humans had to run from predator (捕食者). On full moon nights there were more predators and so the risk of danger was higher. Maybe we needed to wake up more easily, explained Cojochen. "However, it is hard to see a use for it in our modern lives."
In fact, our sleep is not the only thing that changes with the moon cycle. Many animals respond to the cycle too. For example, mosquitoes usually give birth around the full moon. As a result, they bite more on full moon days so that their eggs have enough blood to develop.

B.the risk of people and animals' sleep may go down on full moon night
C.people may wake up more easily on full moon nights in modern time
D.there may be fewer mosquitoes on full moon nights biting people
One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view of the art works.
A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chatted nonstop between themselves. I watched them a moment and noticed the wife was doing all the talk. I admired the husband's patience for putting up with her continuous talk. Distracted (被打扰) by their noise, I moved on.
I met them several times as I moved through the different rooms of art. Each time I heard her nonstop talking, I move away quickly.
I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop making a purchase (购物) when the couple came near to the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He extended (延长) it into a long stick and then tapped his way into the coatroom to get his wife's coat. "He's a brave man." The clerk at the counter said, "Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. During his recovery he made a promise that his life wouldn't change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there's a new art show."
"But what does he get out of art " I asked, "He can't see."
"Can't see You're wrong. He sees a lot. More than you and I do." The clerk said, "His wife describe each painting so he can see it in his head."
I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing painting to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away hand in hand.

You may know the saying: An apple a day keeps the doctor away. A recent study by the Chinese University of Hong Kong has discovered another saying: An apple a day keeps old age away.
The study involved fruit flies, as they share many genes (基因) with humans. Researchers gave food to two groups of fruit flits. Both groups got the same fruit, with one exception (例外): the second group also got apples, while the first did not.
The results showed that flies that ate apple lived an average of 55 days longer than the flies that didn't eat apple. The study also found that apple-eating flies were more able to walk, climb and move about as they became old, the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports.
The researchers believe that the antioxidants (抗氧化剂) found in apples are good for health.
In another experiment, researchers studied the diets of thousands of women. They found that those women who often ate apples were 20 percent less likely to have a heart attack.
Scientists have recently discovered the apple's genetic code (基因序列). This allows scientists to make new kinds of fruit that are healthier. Researchers are already using this information to grow apples with added antioxidants. Antioxidants help to keep eyes and joints (关节) healthy and protect against heart attacks and cancer.
Apples that help people lose weight may be in supermarkets in just four or five years. They are said to be "extra healthy" apples that can stop people from overeating.

What will the house of the future look like Could it have gardens on its walls, or a kitchen with automatic cooking robots Architects believe that they are all possibilities. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.
The tree house
Many architects in the world would like to build a "tree house". Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home. The "root (根)" of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil to the home's temperature.
The lizard house
Like a lizard (蜥蜴), changing color with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When it's in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.
Meals at home
This design is perhaps as much about the future of food production as architecture (建筑风格). It has gardens on the outside wall of the house. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.
Learning from the past
Looking to the future isn't the only way to be green. Sometimes, ancient techniques (古老的技术) can also help cut down energy use. For example, a chimney which used to pollute the environment can now be a useful air conditioner because it is easier for hot air to flow out through the chimney.

Governments at all levels and people from all walks of life have been making great efforts in the fight against the outbreak. In this story, we'll take a closer look at what they have done.
Timely and transparent (透明的) information is important when dealing with epidemics (疫情). In the fight against the novel coronavirus, China has impressed the world with its fast response (应对), transparency and close cooperation with the international community.
After the epidemic broke out in China at the end of Dec. 2019, the National Health Commission (国家卫生健康委员会) immediately sent an expert team to Wuhan, the center of the outbreak, for a deep investigation (调查). On Jan. 8, the novel coronavirus was first identified (确认) as the cause of the epidemic. Three days later, China established a daily reporting system, updating the public every day. Both the central and local-level governments held daily news conferences, giving detailed numbers of new cases, deaths, patients in serious condition and recoveries.
At the same time, China has been sharing relevant information with the whole world in a transparent and responsible manner. Soon after China worked out the genome sequence (基因序列) of the new virus, it gave the results to the World Health Organization (WHO) so that other countries could use it to carry out research and develop medicine. China also provided WHO with a detailed paper about more than 44,000 confirmed cases (确诊病例), which offers "a better understanding about the age range of people affected, the severity (严重性) of the disease and the mortality rate (死亡率)," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Meanwhile, efforts and support from around the world are also being welcomed to fight the disease. At the moment. a WHO team is working in China to find more methods to better treat and prevent the disease.
"China has set a new standard (标准) for other countries to prevent and control the epidemic, while no other country has the scale (规模), speed, transparency and openness comparable (比得上的) to China," said Margaret Chan, former director-general of the WHO.

Greeting people can be confusing, especially during cross-cultural communications. Will a simple handshake do Should you give a hug or offer a kiss on the cheek People in different countries have their own greetings.
During the novel coronavirus epidemic, greeting others is becoming even more confusing. The infectious (传染性的) novel coronavirus has challenged traditional greetings such as shaking hands, kissing and hugging. After all, close physical contact will increase the chance of spreading the virus.
People have realized the risk and stopped using some traditional greetings. On March 1, for example, German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer turned down a handshake from German Chancellor (总理) Angela Merkel. Instead of getting upset, Merkel just laughed and said, "It is the right thing to do."
Health departments in many countries have also suggested that people change their regular greetings to safer ones.
Shaking hands is a common gesture to show respect around the world. Now in the US, the elbow bump (碰肘) is the new handshake. US Surgeon General Jerome Adams introduced the elbow bump, which has been used by political leaders, health officials and professional athletes. Brad Hazzard, a health minister in New South Wales, Australia, advised people to pat (拍) each other on the back in place of a handshake.
In France, kissing on the cheek is a common greeting, even between people who have just met. French Health Minister Olivier Veran has advised the public not to do this. Italian authorities (官方) have made the same suggestion. French lifestyle expert Philippe said simply looking into a person's eyes is enough.
In the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, people rub (摩擦) their noses together upon meeting. Their health departments have advised them to wave only.
In the face of such changes, how should you go about changing the way you greet people Australian etiquette (礼仪) expert Susan Wilson has suggested simply greeting people by looking them in the eye, smiling and saying hello.
Creative greetings
Apart from the official suggestions, people have also invented some new greetings.
At Milan Fashion Week, people did a double kiss on their fingertips in place of cheek-kissing.
A video showing three men tapping their feet together to greet each other has gone viral (火爆的) in Iran.

The novel coronavirus, which was now spreading all over the world, has not been seen in humans before. Researchers have been working to find out where the virus is from.
The virus was officially named COVID-19 on Feb. 12th. The death rate of COVID-19 was about 2.1%. SARS and MERS have fatality rates of about 9.6% and 34.4%, according to WHO.
Generally speaking, children who get the disease have mild symptoms. Only a small number of patients are in serious condition. The virus is especially dangerous for the elderly. Over 80% of deaths have been people older than 60.
The virus spreads mainly through droplets, close personal contact, or touching an object or surface. And it can spread in the air within one to two metres, but will not float in midair.
Infected people will have a fever, cough and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the virus can cause pneumonia (肺炎), kidney failure (肾衰竭) and death.

If you look closely enough, you will notice that each coin has its own unique design.
The Royal Mint, an organization that produces coins for the United Kingdom, has recently announced that new coins will be made to celebrate very important moments in British history. "Our 2020 annual set honor and remember a series of important historical events and people with a huge influence in how we live our lives today," Nicola Howell, the Chief Commercial Officer at the Royal Mint, said in a public press conference (新闻发布会).
The 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Voyage, for example, will be recognized with a unique two-pound coin. The Mayflower was a ship that brought 102 men, women and children from England to North America. These people were some of the first Europeans to settle in America, making the Mayflower a symbol of European colonization (殖民).

Australia is no stranger to wildfires. The country's weather creates heat and dryness, which sometimes make bushfires worse in a natural cycle. However, one that started last September continues to burn, and it may not be natural at all. So far, the fire has burned 73,000 square kilometres of land, killing at least 28 people and destroying more than 3,000 homes, reported the Telegraph.
Scientists say that climate change has played a role in the fire's creation and duration (持续时间). According to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (气象局), the country's average temperatures have risen by more than 1℃ since 1920. The spring of 2019 was Australia's driest season in 120 years. In December, the country saw its hottest day ever, with an average temperature of 41.9℃.
"Because of the loss of vapour in warmer temperatures, the vegetation (植被) and the soils dry out more quickly," Stefan Rahmstorf, a lead author of The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Fourth Assessment Report, told Time.
Worse still, researchers at the UK Bureau of Meteorology believe that wildfires like this might become "not surprising" in the future, according to the BBC. They looked at 57 research papers published since 2013, which examined the relationship between climate change and the risk of wildfires. They found that the link between the two has already been observed in many parts of the world, including the western US, Canada, southern Europe, and even Siberia.
"These are effects we are seeing for 1℃ of global climate change. The effects will get worse if we don't do something to keep the world's climate," Corinne Le Quere, a professor from the University of East Anglia in the UK, told the BBC. "What we are seeing in Australia is not the 'new normal'. It's a transition (过渡) to worse effects."

I've noticed that conversations with my children have started to turn into something that I don't like. It could be my fault. For example, my kids would call me about something that's upsetting them. Then, as soon as they're finished, I go into mum mode.—You should... You need to consider... Have you thought of...
"Mum!" The tone is full of impatience and annoyance. The meaning is clear—"Stop!"
I'm hardly alone in this. The other day, a friend told me that her son seldom listened to anything she said. "It's like talking to a wall," she added.
I know that feeling too well. But I'm learning—very slowly—that 'talking at' is not the same as 'talking with'.
Giving advice to children can be full of problems. Though we may see ourselves sharing the wisdom of our years, they see something else. They see a controlling parent who hasn't accepted the fact that they're adults with their own thoughts and feelings.
They're not looking for any tips. They may not even want an immediate solution to a difficult problem. What they're hoping for is a safe place to talk with a person who loves and supports them no matter what.
Because of this, I've given myself the goal of becoming a better parent by being a better listener. It's not an easy task for parents like me who think they're just being helpful.

B.Children can't learn to be independent.
C.Parents love to show off their wisdom.
D.Parents and kids want different things.
(4) What has the writer finally decided to do
A.Be more
helpful. B.Lend a listening ear.
C.Be patient when talking. D.Stop giving any advice.
