An injured hiker was rescued earlier this month after a train passenger spotted her from the window. She was crazily waving on the other side of a river, having just spent two days trapped in the wilderness with a broken leg.
The rider told the train crew, who then reported it to the train inspector, Henry Smith, who was in a motor car behind them. Henry was able to stop and communicate with the woman on the opposite bank of the river, which was freezing cold and moving quickly.
The hiker, a woman in her twenties, had been missing for two days. She said she’d intended to go on a day hike, but ended up falling 90 feet down a cliff face while trying to take pictures. She reportedly told rescuers that she lost consciousness for an unknown amount of time. Despite a badly broken leg, she struggled to pull herself to the bank of the river to try to flag down trains. She had no emergency supplies with her, or suitable clothing to spend the night outdoors. There had been a cold attack while the woman was trapped in the wilderness. The hiker described spending daylight hours trying to get the attention of passing trains and, at night, would roll herself into a nearby cliff face in an attempt to stay warm.
Henry called to request help for search and rescue. The operator who received the emergency call said the hiker’s family had been looking for her. While they were waiting for the rescue team, Nick and Kylah, an engineer and a fireman on the next train passing by the location, came to help. 327 passengers on the train waited on the track as they crossed the river to examine the woman’s injuries and bring emergency supplies, blankets and a radio for communication. Eventually, a helicopter was sent to locate and rescue the hiker and she was transported safely to the hospital.

Scientists estimate there are millions of trees on earth. I couldn’t believe that those trees can have a healing(治愈的)effect on people.
According to World Health Organization, 40 percent of American adults have at least two chronic(慢性病的)diseases, which include high blood pressure, mood disorders, heart problems and diabetes. According to the International Association of Applied Psychology, lower stress, better moods, better brain activity and even happiness can all be linked to spending time in the great outdoors. That’s why there are dozens of programs that prescribe nature as a potential form of healing. Nature is everywhere.
There are two major theories as to why nature is so good for our brains. The first one is called attention restoration theory. When we spend time in busy urban environments, all the hard edges, traffic, lights and people everywhere really make us have to constantly focus our attention on these things. Whereas when you spend time in nature, it helps restore your powers of attention and reduce that tiredness and bad-temper. The second major theory is called stress reduction theory. So basically, when we spend time in nature after stressful events, it helps us feel better and recover faster.
When I recommended nature for the first time to a patient of mine, he actually just nodded his head and said, “You’re absolutely right. When I spend more time in nature, I feel better.” And so, I think healthcare providers have to get over our own traditional mental views against this new sort of lifestyle, and prescribe something evidence-based, like nature time more often.
This is worth the effort to do. You need to get out of doors and just be surrounded by the greenery and by nature. You’ll feel calmer. You’ll feel less depressed and less anxious. It’s just a great way to deal with the stress of modern life.
8. Which word can replace the underlined word “prescribe”

C. Improve urban environments. D. Deal with stressful issues.
11. What can be inferred according to paragraph 4
A. It is not easy to get in nature.
B. Nature treatment is still unpopular.
C. Most patients prefer nature treatment.
D. Doctors usually recommend nature to patients.
D
We’ve all faced it at one time or another: after laundry, a messy pile of clean clothes are waiting hours to be put away. There are plenty of machines that can wash and dry clothes. So why isn’t there a way to similarly automate the terrible folding process
Researchers have looked into it over the years and as it turns out, robots just don’t do well in folding clothes. As is reported, machines need clear rules in order to function, and it’s hard for them to figure out what exactly is going on in those messy piles-say, where the sweater stops and where the towel begins. In sum, most robots have not generally been equipped for the task. But an international group of researchers say their new method could change that, or at least speed up the process.
Researchers are calling the new method SpeedFolding. It’s a “reliable and efficient bimanual system”—meaning it involves two hands—that’s able to smooth and fold clothes in record speed for robots. SpeedFolding can fold 30 to 40 pieces of clothing per hour, compared to previous models that averaged 3 to 6 pieces in that same time length, according to researchers.
SpeedFolding takes a different approach. Its novel network studied 4,300 human and machine-assisted actions in order to learn how to smooth and fold clothes from a random pattern. That process can involve a number of defined movements including dragging, moving and “pick-and-place”.
While researchers describe SpeedFolding as a significant improvement, it’s not likely to hit the market anytime soon. For one, researchers tracked down a robot similar to the one they used and found that it sold for $58,000. For another, researchers say there’s more they want to explore, including methods with which the robot can learn to work on a novel piece of clothing when given a few demonstrations. But there’s always hope that folding in the future will get even neater.
12. Why are robots poor at folding clothes
A. It is difficult for them to obey clear human orders.
B. They are lacking in enough folding demonstrations.
C. They have trouble handling the random patterns of clothes.
D. It is difficult for them to remember the folding movements.
13. What do we know about SpeedFolding
A. It can perform more delicate actions.
B. It can help with all sorts of housework.
C. It can record the working speed accurately.
D. It can fold 3 to 6 pieces per hour on average.
14. What does the author think of SpeedFolding
A. It is highly profitable. B. It is no better than the old.
C. It has a promising future. D. It will go out of style quickly.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Robots Become More Intelligent
B. The Fastest Ever Folding Robot is Here
C Robots Release People from Housework
D. The Research on the Folding Robot is On

11-year-old child Tanishq Abraham is in the news for graduating from college with three different degrees. The talented kid from California made headlines last year as well, for completing high school at the age of ten.
Last week’s graduation ceremony was attended by Tanishq’s parents- his mother Taji, a doctor, and his father Bijou, a software engineer. They cheered for Tanishq as he was awarded associate degrees in math and physical sciences, general science, and language studies. He wore a rainbow colored scarf that his grandmother had made specially for the occasion.
“The assumption is that he’s the all-time youngest,”said college spokesman Scott Crow. “But we don’t have all the records to completely confirm. He was beyond doubt the youngest this year.”
Tanishq said that he wasn’t frightened by the fact that his classmates were all twice his age, especially because he was well-received. “A lot were really happy that there was a kid in their class,” he said. And his parents were pretty low-key about the whole affair, being used to all his accomplishments since a young age. “Even in kindergarten, he was a few years ahead.” Taji said. “It just went from there.”
Interestingly, Tanishq has been home-schooled by his mother. He’s also been taking classes at the American River College since he was seven years old.
You’d probably think that Tanishq is done with books for his life, but he actually has no plans to stop learning. “I want to become a doctor,” he said after the ceremony. “But I also want to become a medical researcher, and also the president of the United States.” In a tweet, he showed that he hopes to win the Nobel Prize some day in medicine or research. In the meantime, he plans to spend his summer on a family vacation and a Calculus II course.

A robot may be defined as a machine that can be programmed to perform acts automatically. With the increase in high technology, robots are taking over boring or inconvenient work in many areas of life.
One area where robots are making an appearance is farming. There is a robotic revolution going on in the milking industry, and cows, as well as farmers are experiencing the benefits. The advantage for the cows is that they can choose when and how many times a day they want to be milked. On the other hand. farmers no longer have to get up at 4 a. m. every day to go to the milking sheds and this makes a huge difference to their way of life
In traditional farming, cows are milked twice a day, in the morning and the evening, mainly because: this is the most convenient way for farmers to get two milking sessions completed in one day. However, this is not necessarily the best way for each individual cow. Because the robots are programmed to milk the cows whenever they arrive, the cows can be milked once, twice or even four times a day. It is an entirely voluntary system for the cows. They decide. Farmers report that midnight is a particularly busy time at the milking shed. The interesting thing is the cows like the system once they get used to it. Farmers report that milk production increases, the cows live longer and they seem far more relaxed.
The computerized robotic system is entirely automatic. As the cows enter the facility, they are weighed, milked and productivity and health checks are carried out. The facility cleans itself at regular intervals(间隔)and if there is a problem, the robot sends the farmer a message.
Equipping a farm with robots is not cheap. However, farmers who have installed the robotic milking sheds, say they would never go back to the old system. The commonly reported sight of cows queuing patiently in front of their favourite robot must mean the cows like it too.

B. To tell the importance of robots.
C. To tell the readers what is a robot.
D. To provide the definition of robotic system.

Those who don’t live in cities often complain about or feel surprised at the fact that strangers don’t talk to each other in urban public places. They feel sorry about the way we seem to increasingly get lost in mobile devices, seemingly oblivious to what’s going on around us. But sociologists recognize that the space we give each other in the urban places serves an important social function.
Well- known sociologist Erving Goffman developed the concept of “civil inattention” in his book Behavior in Public Places. Far from ignoring those around us, Goffman proved through years of studying people in public that what we’re actually doing is pretending to be unaware of what others are doing around us, therefore providing them a sense of privacy, as they do the same for us. Goffman proved in his research that civil inattention typically involves at first a mirror form of social interaction, like very brief eye contact, the exchange of head nods, or weak smiles. Following that, both parties then typically shin their eyes from the other party.
Goffman theorized that what we achieve, socially speaking, with this kind of interaction, is mutual (相互的) recognition that the other present causes no threat to our security, and we both agree, tacitly (默契地), to let the other alone to do as they please. When we provide civil inattention to others, we effectively approve their behavior. Sometimes, we use civil inattention to save face when we’ve done something we feel embarrassed by, or to help manage the embarrassment that another might feel if we witness them trip, or drop something.
Civil inattention is thus not a problem, but an important part of maintaining social order in public. For this reason, problems arise when this norm (规范) is broken. Because we expect it from others and see it as normal behavior, we may feel threatened by someone who doesn’t give it to us. This is why women feel threatened by those who catcall (发嘘声)to them, and why for some men, simply being stared at by another is enough to cause a physical fight.

A. curious about
B. unsure about
C. tired of
D. unaware of
14. What do we actually mean when we look away from a stranger, according to Goffman
A. We are ignoring him on a rude basis.
B. We are showing our respect for others’ privacy.
C. We are protecting ourselves from physical attacks.
D. We are worrying that we could lose belongings.
15. What can be learned from the text about civil inattention
A. Civil inattention has positive effects on social interaction.
B. Civil inattention helps save face when we’ve done something wrong.
C. Civil inattention is unlinked to social interaction according to Goffman.
D. Civil inattention is a type of normal behavior which we may feel threatened.

If you look around your city, you might spot girls wearing hanfu in subways or people wearing T-shirts with Chinese characters on the streets, A new trend has taken hold in China-guochao, or “China-chic”
According to a report, searches related to guochao on Dianping, a lifestyle information platform, have risen by 170 percent from the same period in 2021,and reviews have risen by nearly 40 percent. China-chic has happened, but what is it
The term characterizes the rise of China’s native fashion trends, It has expanded the concept of “Made in China”, which has been recognized as the representation of Chinese culture and aesthetics offered by homegrown Chinese brands, according to CGTN.
China-chic came into the spotlight in 2018. Before that, big name foreign companies dominated the world market. To win market share, many Chinese brands followed in the footsteps of these Western brands. But that year, Chinese sportswear brand Li-Ning changed things up. During the 2018 New York Fashion Week, Li-Ning introduced its Taoism-inspired Wu Dao collection. The collection not only had a trendy look, but also included elements of traditional Chinese culture. It immediately grabbed attention at home and abroad.
The trend to embrace domestic brands has since spread rapidly to various sectors and products, from food and drinks to clothing, mobile phones and electric vehicles. For example, White Rabbit, whose sweet candy brings back childhood memories for many, launched its perfume and lip balm. “We want White Rabbit to be a brand that young people want to share,” Shen Qinfeng, the company’s marketing manager, told People’s Daily.
Now, the guochao trend is “moving to the next stage, where its success will rely, first and foremost, on gaining cultural confidence rather than Western validation”, according to Kerra Zhou, founder of brand strategy consultancy Kerrisma.
No matter how the guochao trend evolves, there’s one thing that won’t change: Behind the craze is people’s positive attitude toward the country’s development and their recognition of and growing confidence in national culture, said Yao Linqing, a professor in the School of Economics and Management at Communication University of China.

Recently, while out walking my dog Jack, I encountered a blond woman walking her dog. I stopped to chat and she responded amiably. As soon as we had ended our chat and I was walking on, I realized that the woman I had approached was a complete stranger, not one of my neighbors.
Face blindness, is a neurological condition resulting in trouble identifying human faces. Neurologist-author Oliver Sacks famously introduced this condition in his 1985 book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. Sacks wrote about his own severe face blindness in a wonderful article in the NewYorker. Up to 2.5 percent of people are born with face blindness.
Acquired face blindness may be caused by head trauma, strokes or tumors. Face blindness occurs in many people like me with Alzheimer’s disease, even in the early stages. Although my cognitive impairment is still mild, I have been having increasing trouble recognizing faces, even of people I know well. Many of my neighbors are hard for me to recognize until I hear their voices or see the dog they are walking.
The ability to accurately identify other people by recognizing their faces is important to our social, emotional and cultural behaviors. Our brains appear to learn how to recognize the faces of other people of our race during childhood. A study in 2019 showed that there is a critical period for this learning. Children learn how to recognize faces of the group they are raised with,up until about age 12. White children will become adept at distinguishing white face. Similarly, an Asian child raised in an Asian country without exposure to white faces will not be able to distinguish white faces. This learning process slows down and then is gone by age 12.
My best option may be to pay closer attention to the dogs. Even for me, pets are easy to identify because of shape, size, color of coat and sometimes behavior. Next time we pass on the street, we’ll be strangers no more.
8. Which word best describes the author’s experience with a complete stranger

A. An Asian child raised in an Asian country. B. An American child raised in America.
C. An American child raised an Asian country. D. An American adult lived in an Asian country.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. What it’s like to have face blindness B. How we would avoid face blindness
C. Why the elderly choose to keep pets D. What causes the society stranger

Food production is a major contributor to climate change. A 2020 study found that, even if emissions from burning fossil fuels ended immediately, current trends in food systems could derail efforts to limit global warming to 2℃ above per-industrial levels.
Some foods —such as red meat —— produce far more greenhouse gases than others. Last year, a UK government survey found that more than half the people in the country want to make more sustainable choices around food. But because many food items contain multiple ingredients, it can be difficult to unravel the environmental impact of one product over another.
To create a rating system that people would find easy to understand, Clark and his colleagues used an algorithm to estimate how much of each ingredient was in thousands of products sold in major UK supermarket chains. The researchers then gave food items an environmental-impact score out of 100—with 100 being the worst—by combining the impacts of the ingredients in 100 grams of each product. They considered several factors, including greenhouse-gas emissions and land use.
The team found that products containing lamb and beef—such as ready-made meat pies—had the most serious environmental impact, scoring up to three times higher than products made with poultry. The lowest-impact foods tended to be made with plants and included bread products, fruits, vegetables, grains and beverages rich in sugar.
Comparing the environmental-impact score with nutritional information, the researchers found that healthier foods tended to have low environmental impacts. There were some notable exceptions:both nuts and seafood had a good nutrition score but relatively high environmental impacts.
There are large differences between foods. If made more user-friendly and widely accessible, food-rating systems could help people to make informed choices about what they eat. When we start making choices, it really improves our health and environment in a substantial way. This sort of study may help us find our way.
12. What was the study finding
A. Burning fossil fuels will emit greenhouse gas.
B. There will be an end to emissions from burning fossil fuels.
C. Too many ingredients in food will harm your health.
D. Food production is related to climate change.

D. To show the nutritional information of food products in the supermarkets.
14. Which of the following will be recommended to purchase according to the team
A. Nuts and seafood. B. Lamb and beef.
C. Chicken. D. Fruits and vegetables.
15. What can we learn about the food-rating systems from the last paragraph

2022 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards
A yearly contest for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year was held in London this year. The contest had 38,575 entries from around the world. Let’s have a scanning of four of this year’s best works.
The great prize this year belonged to Karine Aigner of the US for an incredible shot of a ball of bees. The “ball” was formed with a lot of male bees fighting to win a single female bee. The picture was taken in southern Texas. Ms Aigner says that soon after the picture was taken, a female bee flew off with one of the males.
Dmitry Kokh of Russia won the award for Urban Wildlife. His picture of polar bears in an old house was taken on an island in the Chukchi Sea, between Russia and Alaska. Mr Kokh was on a boat when he noticed polar bears walking through an area where no one had lived for years. To get the picture without disturbing the bears,he used a quiet drone (无人机) to take the picture.
Fernando Constantino Martinez Belmar of Mexico had to wait in the dark in a cave filled with bats and snakes to get the image. Rat snakes in Yucatàn hang from cracks in the ceiling of the cave, hoping to grab one of the many bats that are flying out of the cave for the night. Using a red light that wouldn’t disturb the animals, Mr Martinez Belmar waited until just the right moment to take the picture. He won the Amphibian and Reptile Behavior prize.
Nick Kanakis of the US took the picture of a wood wren (鹧鸪) — a bird that spends most of its time on the ground. The bird has its ear to the ground, listening for insects to catch and eat. After spotting a bird looking for food farther away, he stayed very still to get the shot, which won the prize for Bird Behavior.

When I was a child, my grandmother often said interpersonal communication mattered. She backed that up with her own behavior, and she invested her time and energy in interacting with people. When she walked down the street, she spoke to everyone, whether an elderly or a child, speaking whether English or Spanish.
However, as she aged, she noticed that most people wouldn’t have time for communication that’s longer than a 160-character text message, much less time to develop genuine friendships that last decades. In fact, people are barely speaking to one another nowadays. As much as I hate to admit it, I have noticed it too.
My grandmother opened my mind to having a pen pal on the other side of the world. It all started in 2013 when I was at University of Southern California. I met with Kerstin Zilm, a German radio personality who wanted to interview me about being a student struggling financially. I didn’t know much about German culture or the German audience who would listen to the show, but I agreed to do so. I had internalized(使内在化)my grandmother’s concept and I felt this was another way of communication and that speaking about my story was better than keeping it to myself. You never knew who could learn from your life experiences.
After the story aired, a woman named Renate reached out to Kerstin, inquiring how she could find me and help me financially with college. I was grateful, but my pride didn’t allow me to accept the money.
However, I didn’t let the opening halt. Encouraged by Kerstin, I emailed Renate back, thanking her for her kindness. This was the beginning of a beautiful intercontinental friend-ship. From then on, Renate and I often emailed each other. And whenever I was in trouble, she was always there. She sent me virtual hugs at the moments when I needed them most. Though I have never met her in person, she is one of the most important people in my life.

Software expert James Curran helped rewrite Australia’s new curriculum(全部课程)for information technology subjects. He said the changes to the current curriculum could stop teenagers avoiding computing and maths subjects in high school.“Kids are naturally curious, but we don’t set up the curriculum in a way that awakens their curiosity so that they can learn the things they want to, and the things they have to,”Curran said.“Teaching maths and computing in a new way makes a very big difference.“
As more and more high school students drop out of advanced maths subjects, Dr Curran warned that computing subjects were in an even more difficult position than them. Only 1,748 year-12 students enrolled(登记)in software design and development in New South Wales last year—about half the 3,300 who studied the subject 10 years ago. Enrolments in information technology have declined sharply, from 10,000 in 2001 to just 1,939 students in 2021.
“Students are not taking computing subjects at the senior level because the subject is a bit out of date,”Curran said.“Computing is a subject that changes all the time and needs to be changed every few years, so I would like to see a continuous process of smaller changes and updates to it.”
As schools struggle to make students stick with the subjects of information technology, engineering and maths,1,000 primary schools across Australia have signed up for a new pro-gram to get young kids interested in high-tech jobs. The program uses online lessons to show children as young as six the process of designing the Olympics logo, and how Netflix collects information to decide which movies to make.
11-year-old student Mia Lucas had fun completing a model on UX design. It is the“user experience”process that design teams use to create products.“I’ve always been interested in creating a website or an app but didn’t know the first step in doing that,“ she said.“The pro-gram helps me a lot.”

Many sensing systems used in water have a problem: They rely on batteries that are often made from unsustainable materials, so such batteries will need replacing at some point.
To look for a cleaner, more long-lasting alternative, Zhonglin Wang at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, and his colleagues have created a self-charging buoy(浮标). It uses nanogenerators(纳米发电机)to gain power from the movement of waves.
The buoy consists of an acrylic(丙烯酸的)ball about 10 centimeters across and four nanogenerators connected to a part that collects the produced charge. As the water moves back and forth through the nanogenerators, they generate around 24.5 milliwatts of power.
It is suggested that the buoy could be used to check and monitor water levels for early flood warning systems. However, there are already many effective and cheap alternatives for this task, says Wouter Buytaert at Imperial College London. Non-contact methods, such as lidar(激光雷达), are probably more suitable for sensing water levels, he explains.
“The new power generation method could prove useful for situations in which non-contact methods aren’t workable, though, such as water quality sensing,” Buytaert says. “There have been devices similar to the buoys in measuring and checking long-term water quality. But if such application is combined with the function of power collecting shown here, it could be more promising,”Buytaert says.
However, if used in rivers, the buoy would possibly be damaged by rising or violently moving water, especially if they are fixed at the rapids of the flood as an early warning system.“In these environments, there is often a high sand load in the river during a flood, so any sensor actually in the river is likely to get destroyed,” says Liz Stephens at the University of Reading, UK.
12. What advantage does the new buoy have
A. It is more easily operated.
B. It is much greener.
C. It is more functional.
D. It is lower-cost.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on
A. The inspiration of creating the buoy.
B. The practical applications of the buoy.
C. The design and working principle of the buoy.
D. The drawback and probable danger of the buoy.
14. Which word best describes Buytaert’s attitude to the new buoy
A. Objective. B. Appreciative. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
15. Which of the following is a potential problem of the new buoy
A. It works unstably.
B. It breaks down easily.
C. It causes a high sand load.
D. It gives unreliable test results.

Dear Children,
As you know, for years I’ve planned to write up the memories. Now that you are grown, I’ve signed up for a memoir writing class. You know what It’s such a struggle!
Sometimes, I wake up in the middle of the night with just the right thought in my mind. Grabbing notepaper and pen, I go in the bathroom and write it down. Great! I don’t want to lose that, and in the morning it may be gone. But I’m having trouble getting back to sleep these days and find myself nodding off in my chair after dinner.
Instead of writing “I remember,” we are encouraged to be creative. The right expression came -during the night. Naturally I jumped up and got it written just the way I wanted. It’s all sort of a torture (拆磨). I’m walking around with dark circles underneath my eyes.
I spend a great deal of time staring out the window, deep in thoughts. I’ve noticed I’m having a little bit of trouble sometimes getting my eyes to focus again. I also carry around a notebook in my purse to seize the thoughts when I’m driving around or at the grocery store. The notebook takes up so much space in my purse!
It’s great to have pictures to illustrate the writings. But in finding just the right ones, I have to search around through all the boxes, and the house is in a mess. in fact, I’m becoming absent-minded, I have to admit. I forgot to turn on the coffee pot the other morning, and yesterday the potatoes burned when I was writing down this great description.
So, my dears, I’ve decided it’s fun to write all the memorable times in my life and to share the happy days of your growing up years. But I think at my age, I need my rest. Enjoy the ones I’ve written because I’ve decided not to write any more memoirs.
Love, Mom

Shengzhou is home to a wealth of intangible (非物质)cultural heritage items with local characteristics, including Yue Opera.
“Several pairs of birds are seen on a wintersweet (腊梅) tree in front of the study. The magpies chirp, indicating good news for Liang Shanbo.” These are the lyrics of Seeing Off over Eighteen Li, from the Yue Opera masterpiece The Butterfly Lovers, which is based on the folktale of unfortunate lovers Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. Two actresses from a local opera troupe (剧团) were practicing the opera performance on a stage in Shijia’ao village, Anlin town, Shengzhou city.
The Shijia’ao village female opera troupe dates back to the last century. In 1923, the first Yue Opera class made up only of women was established in the village, opening a grand chapter in the development of Yue Opera for the next 100 years.
Many of Shengzhou’s residents can sing Yue Opera. Chen Xiaoliu, a member of the female opera troupe in Shijra’ao, grew up in an environment in which she would frequently hear other people sing these songs. Chen’s fondness for Yue Opera prompted her to join the female opera troupe in Shijia’ao, performing in the village every week. Chen has devoted herself to the graceful art form for decades, and now she has a bigger ambition.
“I hope that more people will fall in love with Yue Opera and that audience all over the world can come to my hometown for the performances that I give.” she said.
Chen’s hopes are becoming a reality. In 2016, the Chinese Yue Opera Lovers website was launched. Currently, 180 full-fledged (成熟的) Yue Opera interest clubs have been set up in and outside China. Some of the most valuable skills that managers look for in employees are often difficult to define: creative problem-solving, empathy (共情), kindness and so on. How can you tell if your employees have these skills Recent research suggests that you might look to the library for solutions.
When it comes to reading, we may be assuming that reading for knowledge is the best reason to pick up a book. Research, however, suggests that reading fiction may provide far more important benefits than nonfiction. Although reading nonfiction might certainly be valuable for collecting knowledge, it does little to develop EQ.
Research also suggests that reading fiction is an effective way to enhance the brain’s ability to keep an open mind while processing information. In a 2013 study, researchers examined something called the need for cognitive closure, or the desire to “reach a quick conclusion in decision-making.” Individuals with a strong need for cognitive closure rely heavily on “early information concept,” meaning they are unwilling to change their minds as new information becomes available. Individuals with a lower need for cognitive closure tend to be more thoughtful, more creative, and more comfortable-all characteristics of high EQ.
University of Toronto researchers discovered that individuals who read fiction demonstrated a lower need for cognitive closure. That result is not surprising given that reading fiction requires us to slow down, take in volumes of information, and then change our minds as we read. There’s no easy answer in fiction; instead, there’s only perspective-taking. As readers, we’ll almost certainly hate some characters but we are forced to experience how they think.
While there is no specific academic data on how fiction reading impacts employees, research on reading shows reading fiction to be one of the best methods for building empathy, critical thinking, and creativity. If we want better thinkers in the business world, we have to build better readers.
12. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs about reading fiction
A. It helps develop EQ.
B. It helps gain valuable skills at work.
C. It helps collect knowledge.
D. It helps find solutions to employment.
13. How does the writer explain the impact of cognitive closure on individuals
A. By giving examples.
B. By describing the research process.
C. By making comparison.
D. By analyzing the research statistics.
14. What does the discovery of University of Toronto researchers suggest
A. Reading fiction only requires perspective-taking.
B. Readers will hate characters while reading fiction.
C The process of reading fiction helps improving thinking qualities.
D. The strong need for cognitive closure pushes readers to read fiction.
15. What did the author try to convey in the last paragraph
A. Reading fiction improves academic performance.
B. Readers in the business world are urgently needed.
C. Research on the influence of reading should be considered.
D. Reading fiction has further influences on cultivating readers’ mind.
