Passage 3
Shadow puppetry(皮影戏) is a form of theater. It started during the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC—AD 9). Since it was simple, cheap and portable(便携的), people in the countryside used to enjoy it. It not only lets people have fun at night but also takes place at important events. It tells us about folk and historical stories, passing on local customs and culture. In 2006 and 2011, it was added to the national and UNESCO intangible cultural heritage lists.
Born in the birthplace of shadow puppetry—Hua County, Shaanxi—Wang Haiyan fell in love with the folk art at a young age.“My father is a master of the art. I used to be his assistant,” Wang said.
Now 43, Wang is a master of shadow puppetry and opened a studio(工作室) to pass on the folk art. Making the puppets(木偶) and performing with them are the key parts of the art.
“The style in my hometown pays a lot of attention to the creation of the puppets,” Wang said.
There are 24 steps to make the puppets, including washing the leather, carving(雕刻) and painting. Carving is the hardest part. Each shadow puppet needs about 3,000 carves, according to Wang.
“We have a special carving skill—moving the leather under the knife. We hold the knife still in the right hand and only move the leather in the left hand,” Wang said. It took her three years to master the skill. She put a brick on her left hand to practice.
Wang works hard to mix the traditional art with modern design. In 2016, she made shadow puppets based on the cartoon series Fox Spirit Matchmaker and gave an online performance. She used colors like purple and blue and puppetry skills to make the performance interesting.
“Each puppet usually has three wooden sticks. But we give it five or six,”Wang said.“In this way, two people have to move it together. This creates more vivid(生动的) performances.”

Passage 1
When I was a little girl, all I wanted to do was to play. Sometimes, I even forgot to do my 1 . Of course, my class teacher wouldn’t turn a blind eye to this. At that time, I wondered how she could 2 so much time supervising(监督) me. Didn’t she have anything else to do So my biggest wish then was to become a teacher, 3 it seemed that a teacher never needed to do any work.
But later, I took more notice of my class teacher’s life. To my great surprise, she was much 4 than I had thought. Whenever I saw her in her office, she would be busy 5 . Sometimes, she was correcting our test papers; sometimes, she was having a heart-to-heart talk with a student; sometimes, she was 6 her lessons. It seemed that she never had time to take a rest!
I felt curious as to 7 my teacher was always able to be so energetic, though she was busy around the clock. Gradually, I realized that teaching was a rewarding job. It brings a teacher a 8 of achievement to be able to nourish(培育) many young minds. A teacher would always feel 9 upon seeing his or her students go from expressing puzzlement to understanding all the difficult points.
10 being a teacher can be exhausting, I still want to be a teacher. Perhaps I have a long way to go, but I will keep fighting for this dream.

Passage 2
I think the biggest difference between middle school and high school is the homework load(工作量) and the size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550, but joining clubs, in sports and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade.
The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve prepared for the night before. I have gotten an A, and not remembered anything later. I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful!
While drinking and smoking might be present in some middle schools, they’re also around in high schools. I have a lot of friends who promised they’d never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasting instead of studying, you will regret it when you’re applying for(申请) college. The “friends” who say you’re a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don’t follow in their footsteps. Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.

A.It requires hard work.
B.There are very few activities.
C.It’s hard to meet new people there.

2.The author advises high school students to .( )

3.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us ( )

B.Not losing ourselves in high school.
C.Not going to any party in high school.
D.The trouble caused by drinking and smoking.

Prevention First
The best way to deal with sports injuries is to keep them from happening in the first place. Think of avoiding injuries as just another part of playing by the rulebook. Knowing the rules of the game you’re playing and using the right equipment can go a long way toward preventing injuries.
Common reasons why teens get injured while playing sports include:
·not training or playing properly
·training too much
·not wearing the right footwear
·not wearing the right safety equipment
If you think you’ve been injured, pull yourself out of the game or stop doing your activity. Let a coach or parent know what happened in case you need to see a doctor.
Call a doctor when:
·pain is very bad
·pain is worse when you’re active
·the injured area is swollen(肿胀的)
·you can’t walk freely
·pain continues for a while, gets worse at times, or lasts for a week or more following an injury

Passage 3
Let’s do some sleep math. You lost two hours of sleep every night last week because of a big project due on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, you slept in, getting four extra hours. On Monday morning, you were feeling so bright-eyed, and you only had one cup of coffee, instead of your usual two. But don’t be cheated by your energy. You’re still carrying around a heavy load of sleepiness, or what experts call “sleep debt”—in this case something like six hours, almost a full night’s sleep.
Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you should be getting and the amount you actually get. It’s a deficit(赤字) that grows every time we skim some extra minutes off our nightly sleep. “People accumulate(积累) sleep debt gradually without being noticed,” says psychiatrist William C.Dement, the founder of the Stanford University Sleep Research Centre. Studies show that such short-term lack of sleep leads to a foggy brain, worsened vision, and trouble remembering. Long-term effects include obesity and heart disease. A survey by the National Sleep Foundation reports that we’re losing one hour of sleep each night—more than two full weeks of sleep each year.
The good news is that, like all debts, with some work, sleep debt can be repaid. Adding an extra hour or two of sleep a night is the way to catch up on sleep debt. For the long-term lack of sleep, take it easy for a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern. Go to bed when you are tired, and allow your body to wake you in the morning (no alarm clock allowed). You may find yourself nervous at the beginning of the recovery cycle: expect to have ten hours’ shut-eye per night. As the days pass, however, the amount of sleeping time will gradually decrease.
So earn back that lost sleep—and follow the orders of your inner sleep needs, and you’ll feel better. “When you pay back sleep debt, you will become a superman,” says Stanford’s Dement, talking about the improved mental and physical abilities that come with being well rested.
1.The example of sleep math is used to show .( )
A.in what case you build up sleep debt
B.why you need six hours’ sleep every night
C.why you are full of energy even when lacking sleep
D.in what case you should drink coffee to keep energetic

A.By giving an example.
B.By giving a definition(定义).
C.By making an argument.
D.By having a discussion.
3.By saying the underlined sentence in the last paragraph, Dement means . ( )
A.you can get enough sleep with the superman’s help
B.you can achieve your goals with sleep debt
C.you will be in a good state with enough sleep
D.you will be clever if you accumulate sleep debt
4.What might be the most suitable title for the text ( )

If you want to teach yourself how to draw, there is good news. A butterfly-like robot, DrawBo, is there to help you. It can teach you how to draw hundreds of pictures step by step.
The 220-gram robot can be used on any whiteboard or even just a piece of paper on a wall. DrawBo has two cords(粗线) that are hung onto hooks(钩). They allow DrawBo to move freely. There is a special opening for a pencil or a maker pen on DrawBo’s body. Moving up and down and from side to side, DrawBo draws a picture and pauses(停顿) after finishing each line.
DrawBo comes with an app. Kids can open the app and choose a picture, which is sent to the robot by Bluetooth. The robot then draws the picture one line at a time, pauses after each line so kids can have enough time to copy it onto their own piece of paper.
Users can choose how long the robot pauses before drawing the next line. They can also make it “wait” until a “Next” button(按钮) is clicked on the app.
The app includes some easy pictures and some that are more difficult, with things like foods, animals and cartoon characters to choose from.
You can get the robot on the Internet. If you spend $149, you can get a robot with 500 pictures on the app. For $199, you can get a robot and 1,000 pictures, and for $359, you can get two robots with 1,500 pictures to choose from.

Though wombats look fat, they are good 7 and swimmers. They can run as fast as 40 km per hour—the 8 of a car. They do not climb trees like koalas, their nearest relative.
Another interesting 9 about wombats is that their poop(粪便) is cube-shaped(立方体的) because they often use their poop to mark their territory(领地). They will 10 poop cubes on trees, mushrooms and rocks. Cubed poop won’t roll off these places.

Passage 2 [2022·原创题]
How much space do you think you need to grow a forest If your answer is bigger than a couple of tennis courts(网球场), think again. Tiny forests are springing up in cities around the world. They’re increasing biodiversity(生物多样性) and fighting climate change.
The idea comes from Akira Miyawaki. He’s a plant scientist from Japan. He started a special way of growing forests. It’s known as the Miyawaki method. It means planting different kinds of native trees close together in a small area and leaving them to grow into a thick forest. Miyawaki has planted more than 1,000 tiny forests in Japan and other countries.
The Miyawaki method is said to grow trees 10 times faster than other methods since the trees have to “fight” for resources. And these tiny forests are more biodiverse than traditional forests. That’s according to a 2018 study by Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
The Miyawaki method has become popular in Europe. Boomforest is an organization in Paris, France. Last November, it planted two forests using the Japanese botanist’s method. The group also teaches people how they can grow their own tiny forests.
In the Netherlands, IVN Nature Education has helped communities build 100 forests using the Miyawaki method. It plans to double that number by 2022. The group also educates kids about tiny forests.
Simon Lewis is excited about tiny forests. He’s a professor of Global Change Science at University College London in England. Lewis explains that it is important to grow trees because they absorb(吸收) CO2 which leads to climate change. He hopes more people will use the Miyawaki method to plant tiny forests.
