Lesson 22 Travel on the Internet
1. Lesson type: Reading.
2. Resource analysis:
The central topic of this unit is to learn about Internet. The topic is closely connected to students’ daily life. According to the “English Curriculum Standard (2011)”, students should be able to use reading skills while reading, thus mind-map is designed to help students better understand the structure of one part of the passage, thus enabling students to retell one paragraph. Learning how to draw a mind-map prepares students to grasp the outline and structures of a reading material in the future.
The teacher will integrate the teaching material, making exercise 1&3 a necessary part of the class.
On top of that, audio of the text, exercises from the textbook and some related pictures will be included in the class to arouse students’ interest.
3. Student analysis:
The learning style of the students can be varied from field independence to field dependence, thus different activities are designed.
Internet nearly concerns everyone. Meanwhile, Internet surely brings good points and bad ones. This text focuses on the benefits Internet brings to our daily life and how to make full use of it to help people in need.
4. Teaching objectives:
1) Through reading, retell paragraph 3 with the help of a mind map and do a self-study about language points after class.
2) Students will be able to use the key words (receive, cancer, blessing, Egypt, pyramid) and share their opinion on the set topic.
3) Students will learn to use the Internet actively to solve some problems in their life.
5. Teaching focuses:
1)The students will be able to use the reading skills of mind-map and retelling.
2)The students will be able to collaborate in the pair work/group work.
6. Teaching methods: communicative approach& Direct Method
7. Teaching aids: Blackboard, Chalk, Computer, PowerPoint
8. Teaching Procedure
Lead-in: Warming-up: Today’s free talk (1.5 min )
(Activate students to be prepared about the related topic and get students involved emotionally in the topic. )

Internet
I have different names. Some people call me Internet, and others call me Wi-Fi.
Most children love me, but some parents hate me.
I have been part of your life. With me, you listen to pop music, chat with your close friends, play online games and maybe do your homework. I open a new world to you. I make it possible for you to talk with your friend anytime, anywhere. With me, you can be the one you want to be. In a word, I make your life more colorful.
Am I great Yes, you can’t live without me. )
Step 1 Pre-reading (2 min)
(Activate students to be prepared about the key words in the passage and enable students have a better command of the words.)
1) Read the new words
Lead the students to read the new words in this lesson.If possible, the students may read after the tape.
2) Guessing game about new words.
Step 2 While-Reading(27.5 min)
(Different approaches are used to analyze different paragraphs so that different skills are practised and meanwhile students will not get bored easily.)
1) Para 1:
Listen to the first paragraph and answer the question on the screen:
(This step is aimed at developing students listening skill and get students involved in the context.)
Q:Jane got bad news. What was that How does Jane feel
(A:Her grandma had a terrible type of cancer. She felt very sad.)
2) Para 2:
a) Read the second paragraph and answer the question on the screen:
Q: What was her grandma’s dream Is it easy to realize Why or why not
(A:Her grandma had a dream of travelling around the world.)
b) Show a picture to the students.
(Enable the students to be familiar with the structure “have a dream of ” and understand that having a big dream as a young man is necessary. )
Q: Who is the man What was his dream when he was young
(A: He is Sun Zhongshan. He had a dream of being a doctor. Then he changed his mind. He had a dream of “curing” our country.)
c) Discussion: Suppose you see Jane's story on the Internet. You want to help her grandma realize her dream. What would you do
(Students will be required to cooperate and share their opinions within their group.)
3) Para 3:
a) Read the third paragraph with the tape and answer the question on the screen:
(Encourage the students to imitate the pronunciation and check whether Jane used the same way to help her grandma as you. )
Q:What did Jane do to help her grandma
(A:Jane posted her grandma's story on a blog and asked for help.)
b) Fill in the blanks three times.(Read this paragraph 3 times with different requirements to help students be more familiar the VERBS, NOUNS and conjunctions so that students may be aware of the key structure of this paragraph and it is easier for them to retell later.)
c) Retell paragraph 3 with the help of the mind map.
(Students will be able to have a far better understanding of the structure of this paragraph and practise their speaking and memorizing skills as well . )
4) Para 4: Read the third paragraph with the tape and answer the question on the screen:
(Help students know well-known scenic spots and enable them to be aware of some useful prepositions. )

5) Para 5: Listen to the last paragraph and answer the question on the screen:

Step 3 Post-reading (8 min)
1) My voice: Suppose you see Jane's story on the Internet. You want to help her grandma realize her dream.Where would you like to go with her grandma Why Give your reasons.
(Watch a short video about some well-known scenic spots around the world and enable students to form their opinions about it.)

2) Thinking: What can we learn from the story
Homework: (1 min)
1. Students in all levels:
1) Read the passage after the tape twice.
2) Finish 2 on Page 57.
3) Copy the new words in bold in A to Z order.
2. Students in Level A and B can choose: Write an e-mail to help her grandma.
3. Students in level C and D: Retell Paragraph 3 fluently after class.

One class couldn’t cover all the language points and provide enough chances for them to practice and use them in real context. In the following class, the teacher will provide more chances for the students to analyze the text and use some structures in real context.
