It was the middle of July. I had spent two days exploring a bat cave in the desert in Southern New Mexico. The cave was part of an ancient flow of lava (熔岩流), now hardened into rock. I had left the cave and was driving my pickup truck on a rough (高低不平的) track across the surface of the lava flow. Suddenly, the truck came to a stop, caught on a black lava rock.
A quick check of the underside the worst: the truck's axle (车轴) was bent, nearly broken in two: I couldn't help in such faraway country. I put the food and cans of water into my backpack and set off on foot, going north, the direction of the main highway. I was low on water. Too little food did not matter much, but hiking across the desert in July without water could be dangerous. As I set out, unreasonable came over my mind. I was afraid of everything around me. Each creature made my heart jump. In my mind, every movement was a scary animal about to strike and kill me.
I walked for hours and cried until I that nobody was around to hear plaining was useless. A change came over me. I began to feel less afraid. Fear was replaced by curiosity. I went on, and slowly but surely began to see the desert world differently, through eyes, not frightened ones.
That night I lay on the warm sand, using my backpack as a pillow. The sky went dark. The stars began to shine in the hugeness of the heavens. With a smile I thought how little there was to fear, after all. By noon the following day I north. I began to think how lucky I was to see the wild desert world. A wrecked truck and a forced hike across the desert gave me an/ a to see what few others ever saw.
Late in the day, I came to a farmhouse. I drank all the lemonade that the farmer and his wife had in their refrigerator. "I liked it out there," I told them when we got to talking. "I just wish I had been less frightened. I would have noticed more that way." "I know what you mean," the man said thoughtfully. It's a rare sight, that desert wilderness, a rare sight."

When I was a child, my father had to do three jobs for a family of seven. Every time I saw him come back late, looking tired, I promised myself that someday I would show my to my father for what he had done.
Over the next twenty years, my father worked hard to support our big family and suffered a lot from a heart problem. One morning, my father's old car broke down and he asked me to pick him up after his medical examination. He had strongly refused when I to replace his old car. Partners in Art
No one sat next to Leon. That's why when I shot into the classroom just before the bell, the only left was beside him.
Ms. Priestley said, "Sit down, Nimmy."
I don't think Ms. Priestley likes me. I am terrible in art.
"Today we're going to draw a fantasy picture," Ms. Priestley said.
"This will be !" Leon said. That's why no one liked to sit by Leon. He was too excited.
I drew wild zigzags and two lines across the page.
"What are you drawing " Leon asked.
I sighed (叹息着说). "Mountains and a river."
"That's not fantasy. Why not make it a dragon instead "
I looked at him.
"The mountains could be the scales (鳞片) along its back, the river could be a long tail," Leon smiled hopefully.
To my surprise, I could the dragon take shape. And I started drawing the body.
Ms. Priestley was moving around the classroom. "That's a very nice , Nimmy." Ms. Priestley's voice made me jump.
I smiled shyly, because it wasn't totally my idea, "It was Leon's," I said.
Ms. Priestley's smile grew wider. "Excellent, Leon. We must always be willing to share our ideas." Then Ms. Priestley continued, "Nimmy, why don't you Leon some advice "
On Leon's paper was a space farm. "It's nice," I offered.
"And…" Ms. Priestley said encouragingly.
"Maybe… maybe you could add… some levels. Each level for something different," I added.
Leon happily.
"See, it's not so hard," Ms. Priestley said, and walked on. I breathed. Maybe I could be OK in art.
"We should be partners in art," Leon said. "We give each other good ideas." I smiled. I my name on his picture and Leon signed on mine. "Now we're partners in art."

Father and son
The other day, I was sitting in the study and working on my website, a cup of tea on the table and old songs from my computer. It was a special pleasure to have such a day after weeks of hiking, snowboarding and going crazy.
"Hi, dad! Want some orange juice, graybeard " Coyote yelled (叫喊) to me much louder than .
"No, just bring me some chips!" I shouted back.
One time, when I misheard what he said three times in a row, he that I had become too old and started to hear worse. Since then, yelling at me has become a kind of family joke.
Pushing everything to the limit was the basis of Coyote's character. On the one hand, it helped him to achieve tasks he had to do on his own, and he did great, making me proud of him. On the other hand, this brought him , as he did not know when to stop. At such moments, I would behave super-fatherly, and give him advice and warnings that he usually ignored (忽视). When he wore a green haircut, I would try to convince (说服) him to paint it black. When he got a tattoo (纹身), we had a/ an . All these surely drove me mad, and the big fights started. It is strange but when I was a teenager, my father would act exactly the same and it took me a long time to understand him.
"Dad, let me show you something," Coyote said as he was getting back. "Don't get too , okay " I sighed (叹气), because I was almost sure of what I was about to see.
When he his T-shirt, I saw a new tattoo: some Buddhist symbol, I guess. Coyote has been interested in Asian culture for a long time.
"Control yourself, graybeard," I said to myself, trying not to yell something like, "Why the hell would you need another tattoo after you already made that huge first one "
The next moment, I realized that my yelling would not anything; the tattoo was already on Coyote's skin.
And then I thought: "Hey, what if I get a tattoo myself "

The New Hoop
Marco looked at the basketball hoop and threw the ball up. "Score!" Marco shouted as the went through the basketball hoop. "You won this time, but next time I'll you, Marco!" said Kim, as the two friends walked home, "I wish we could play at the park too, instead of only at school." But the basketball hoop in their neighborhood park had been ruined by a fallen tree. "I feel so ," said Kim, "I guess there's nothing we can do."
Marco and Kim walked past the city's recycling center. They saw Mr. Morse was collecting plastic, paper and metal items. Marco stared at all the old stuff. "That gives me an idea!" he said, "Mr. Morse, do you have anything we could to make a basketball hoop "
Mr. Morse picked up a plastic laundry basket. "We are going to recycle this basket, but I think you can take it."
"It looks useless, old and cracked. I want a new basketball hoop!"said Kim.
"Why " wondered Marco, "reusing. things is a great way to waste. And don't you think that will be meaningful to make something on our own "
That sounds interesting! I guess we can try," said Kim, "but I still don't it will be as good as a new one."
They took the basket to Marco's house and found some leftover wood in an old yard. Together they tinkered (焊) with the. materials and made a post and a backboard. When all the parts were ready, they took everything to the and managed to set up the hoop.
"It looks better than I thought it would!" said Kim, "Here's the real test!" He bounced the ball, aimed and shot a perfect basket. He was .
"Wow, I was wrong." Kim said. "This basketball hoop is really great. Now we can play whenever we want!" The two friends played in the park until dinner time. The hoop stood the real test and the boys had the true joys.

Old Science in Practice
" With Your Dream Holiday!" was a competition for students who were interested in science. Students needed to think of an unusual method of measuring (计算) the height of Eiffel Tower. The first prize was a trip to Paris to check their method in practice.
Lots of students sent their applications (申请). The were the students from Grade 8, No. 16 Middle School." The idea just came into my head. Actually, it was a 2,600-year-old idea! I our history lesson about ancient Egypt. Our teacher the method that was used to measure the height of the Pyramid (金字塔) of Cheops and I thought we could do the same," said one of the students, Peter Schmidt.
The other students thought the idea could work and together they it and applied for the competition. Peter was their team leader and the team won their holiday.
After they arrived in Paris, they travelled around the city. On their second day they had to that they had the right to win and that their method worked. They were divided into three groups. Each group had a certain and special equipment (装备). Using the mathematical formula (数学公式) they got to work.
"We weren' t sure whether we would do it until the end of the task. I was so and hoped we wouldn' t make a mistake," said Alex, one of the happy winners. Neither traffic nor joggers (慢跑者) could stop them from doing the task . They got 318.8 metres and the real height of the tower is 324 metres! An exciting result!

A Bottle of Milk
I recently heard a story about a very famous research scientist who was interviewed by a newspaper reporter. He was asked why he was able to be so much more than the other person. He said that it all came from an with his mother when he was young.
He tried to remove a bottle of milk from the fridge when he lost his hold on the bottle, spilling the milk all over the kitchen floor! Instead of at him, his mother said, "Robert, what a great and beautiful mess you have made! I have never seen such a huge pool of milk. Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to with the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up "
Indeed, Robert played it. After a few minutes, his mother said, "Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, you have to clean it up. So we would use a sponge (海绵), a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer " He the sponge and together they cleaned up the spilled milk. His mother then said, "You know, what we have here is a difficult experiment in how effectively to carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Now, let's a way to carry it without dropping it." The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it . The scientist then said that it was at that moment that he knew he didn't need to be afraid to make and he'd like to try a lot of things in different ways.
Wouldn't it be great if all parents would follow the example of Robert's mother

Self-Portrait(自画像)
Alia was disappointed to find herself in the art club. She had been sick during the week when everyone else got to pick their classes. She had for the science club, but they were full by the time she got to choose. She loved everything about , from the way it used facts to how it showed the basic nature of things. But art was so un-scientific.
The first class project was self-portraits. Some students were drawing self-portraits using mirrors. Others were working from photographs. Alia had a quick look at the incomplete sketches, feeling like a cat in a dog show.
The teacher came up to Alia and sat next to her.
“Every portrait begins with a ," he said. "Then you create a series of lines."
To show an example, he drew a group of small, quick portraits. He began each one with a circle, some straight lines, and a triangle (三角形) to where the eyes, nose, and mouth should go. Alia had never thought about it, but the parts of everyone's face were in the same spots.
, Alia worked on her own self-portrait. She drew the basic form of a head, the way she had been shown. From there, she used lines to design the parts of her face. The process took and carefulness. She had to take note of each detail. One wrong measurement (长度) could throw off the whole portrait.
Alia was by her structure (构图)and self-control involved in drawing a portrait. Measuring, studying details, showing the basic nature of something—it reminded her of what she about science.

A Boy with Great Courage
I have two jobs—as a teacher and a health-care doctor. I have worked with plenty of children infected (感染) with the virus (病毒) that causes AIDS. The relationships that I have had with these special kids have been in my life. They have taught me so many things, but I have especially learned that great can be found in the smallest of packages. Let me tell you about Tyler.
Tyler was born infected with HIV; his mother was also infected. From the very beginning of his life, he was dependent on medicines to enable him to live on. When he was five, he had a tube put in a vein (静脉) in his chest. This tube was connected to a pump, which he carried in a small backpack on his back. Medicines were connected to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstream. At times, he also needed more oxygen (O2) to his breathing.
Tyler wasn't willing to one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease. It was not unusual to find him playing and running around his backyard, wearing his special medical backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little car. All of us who knew Tyler admired him for his pure joy in being and the energy it gave him. Tyler's mom often pleased him by telling him that he moved so fast that she needed to dress him in red. That way, when she looked through the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly see him.
This terrible disease eventually wore even the likes of a little tiger like Tyler. He grew quite ill and, unfortunately, so did his HIV-infected mother. When it became clear that he wasn't going to live on, Tyler's mom talked to him about death. She him by telling Tyler that she was dying too, and that she would be with him soon in heaven.
A few days before his death, Tyler called me over to his hospital bed and whispered. "I might die soon. I'm not scared. When I die, please dress me in . Mom promised she's coming to heaven, too. I'll be playing when she gets there, and I want to make sure she can find me."

A Special Test
One day a teacher entered the classroom and asked his students to prepare for a test. They waited at their desks for the test to begin. The teacher handed out the question papers with the text facing down as usual. When he handed them all out, he asked his students to over the paper and begin.
To everyone's surprise, there were no questions, just a black dot (圆点) in the center of the . Seeing the expression on everyone's face, the teacher said, "I want you to write what you see there."
The students got started on the inexplicable (费解的) task. At the end of the class, the teacher took all the answer papers and started reading each one of them aloud in front of all the students. All of them with no exceptions the black dot, trying to explain its position (位置) in the middle of the paper.
After all had been read, the classroom was silent. The teacher began to explain , "I am not going to you on this. I just wanted to give you something to think about. No one wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone focused on (聚焦于) the black dot and the same happens in our lives. We have the white paper to observe (观察) and enjoy, but we always focus on the dark dots."
"Our life is a journey with love and care. We always have to celebrate: nature renewing itself every day, our friends around us. However, we insist on focusing only on the dark dots: the health problems, the relationship with parents. The dark dots are very small compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that our minds. Take your eyes away from the black dots in your life. Be happy and enjoy every moment!"

It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when Pa and I went owling. There was no . The trees stood still (静止地) as giant statues. And the moon was so _____ that the sky seemed to shine. It was as quiet as a dream.
We reached the line of pine trees, and Pa held up his hand. I stayed where I was and . Then he called. "Whoo-whoo-who-who-whooo-", the of a Great Horned Owl. "Whoo-whoo-who-who-whooo-", again he called out. And then again. After each call he was silent and for a moment we both listened. But there was no answer.
Pa shrugged and I shrugged. I was not disappointed (失望的). My brothers all said sometimes there's an owl and sometimes there isn't. If you go owling, you be quiet.
Then we came to a clearing in the dark woods. And then Pa called, "Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo. Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo."
an owl shadow lifted off and flew right over us. Pa turned on his big flashlight (手电筒) and caught the owl just as it was on a branch. For one minute, three minutes, maybe even a hundred minutes, we stared at one another. Then the owl pumped its great wings and flew back into the forest.
When you go owling, you don't need words or else but hope. That's what Pa says. The kind of hope flies on silent wings of owls under the shining moon.

Mr. Clinton and his 13-year-old son Tony are basketball fans. Last October 10th was Tony's birthday, so Mr. Clinton decided to drive to New York for the first game of the World Series. They had no ticket but hoped to buy a from scalpers.
It was a two hours' ride. After they arrived, they walked in the street for two hours, a sign that read, "We need two tickets." There were many scalpers around, but the cheapest ticket was $200. They were about to leave when suddenly a man stopped them. He took out two tickets and them to Mr. Clinton.
"How much do you want "
"Just a present," said the man. "Enjoy the game."
Mr. Clinton wouldn't , so the man explained, "I'm Jackson. Hans is my boss. He and his wife haven't missed a World Series in 18 years. But he is ill and can't watch the game this time. So he told me to give the two tickets to people I thought would actually enjoy the game. A lot of people looked as if they might just take the tickets and sell them. Then I saw you and I followed you for a while. You seemed very disappointed. You me think of my dad and me when I was a child. I dreamed of going to a World Series game with my father. But my dream never came true."

Little Boxes of Chocolates
Even though thirteen years had passed, it seemed like only yesterday when Dad was handing out those little boxes of chocolates to each of his sweethearts.
Valentine's Day was my father's holiday. My sisters and I learned early to be good on that day. We waited a long time for Dad to get home and then quickly lined up like good little soldiers as he gave each child a small, heart-shaped box, holding some chocolates.
It caused reactions (反应) as we went through the periods in life. In the elementary school years, we would rush home and wait for Dad. In junior high, we felt a little embarrassed (尴尬的). In high school, we thought we were too cool to be rushing home. However, we were still comforted knowing that Dad was home waiting for us with his special .
My sisters and I thought the only way we would ever get out of this tradition was to move out of the house. We were . Even after we all moved out of the house, when Valentine's Day came, there was a little box of chocolates waiting for each of us. So we still made the trip over to it.
When Mum passed away, we thought this whole tradition would disappear gradually. Wrong again. Grandchildren entered the picture and were also in this tradition from the day they were born.
One year, everything changed. In that February, Valentine's Day on Dad's bowling night, so he handed out the chocolates a day early.
Then, Valentine's Day arrived. I was watching TV when the phone rang. It was the hospital. Dad had a heart attack, and he didn't make it.
A few years later after his death, we finally went through the hard time and began again. And come February, when those little heart-shaped boxes of chocolates appear in store windows, Dad's tradition lives on my heart.

I knew I was not supposed to be quite so excited. I was too old for that. At age eleven, the oldest and my mom's "grown up" girl, I had to keep calm. I was in middle school after all. But every chance I got, when I was alone, I each present under the tree. I read every tag (标签) and felt every bag, guessing at the things within. I had examined each gift so often that I could tell which went to which person without looking at the tags.
It had been a hard year for my family. Whenever my mom looked over at the tree and presents, she would sigh (叹气) and warn us, "There won't be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be ." Christmas had been a time for my parents to spoil (宠爱) us. I had heard the phrase "giving is better than receiving", but getting presents was the whole point!
On Christmas morning, we waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and had to wait and while other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self-control.
Here's another one for you," said Mom as she handed me a bag. I looked at it, confused. Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas, I this one. It was for my mom!
It was a blow dryer. While this may seem only a simple gift, to me it was so much more. But, in my world, where receiving was more important than giving, my mom's act of selflessness was difficult to ! I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must love me to do that.
I have always remembered that Christmas with love. As an adult with children, I can now see my mom was finding an even greater in her Christmas because giving truly is better than receiving. To me, my mom's simple act meant the world.

It's been nearly 40 years since I became a member of the navy (海军). You may be wondering how I have won so many honors as a commander-in-chief (最高统帅). In fact, it all began from the half a year's basic training, which I will never forget. The training included midnight swims in the cold water, days without and long painful runs in the soft sand. I always felt cold, wet, hungry and painful.
The training also needed to find those who could in an environment of stress, mess, failure and hardships. To me, the basic training was a lifetime of challenges that lasted six months. And today, I'd like to talk about one little thing.
Every morning in the training, my instructors (教官) would appear in our rooms. The first thing they did was to our beds. The corners would be square if we did it right. The covers would be pulled tight, and the pillow would be centered just under the headboard.
It was a difficult task. But every morning we were required to make our beds . It seemed a little funny, but the wisdom of this simple act has been proved to me many times over.
If you make your bed every morning, you will have completed the first task of the day. It will bring you a small of success, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another and another. And by the end of the day, one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will prove the fact. If you can't do the things right, you will hardly be able to do the big things right.
Changing the world can happen anywhere and anyone can do it. I can make sure that it doesn't matter whether I ever a day in uniform (制服,军服). Even now, I still start my day with making the bed to perfection. So if you have an awful day by accident, you will come home to a bed that is made—that you made—and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.
In general, if you want to change the world, off by making your bed. I hope all of you will have a brighter future!
