Last week our class went to Hill End to learn about the gold rush era (淘金热时期) in Australia in the 1800s. We left school very early on a bus and traveled on many difficult roads for almost six hours. We arrived mid-afternoon.
First we walked around the town visiting the old buildings such as the school, hospital and hotel. Some of the buildings were falling apart (分开地). We then walked to the graveyard and read some interesting grave stones. We were sad to read how many babies and small children died in the gold rush time.
The next day we walked through the forest to some goldmines (金矿). We felt our way through a long, underground tunnel (通道) and saw where the miners kept breaking small pieces of the rock hoping to shout “Eureka!” when they found gold. Then we climbed up a ladder (梯子) to get back out. Luckily nobody fell down any mines.
Next, at the gold museum, we saw a model of the largest piece of gold ever found. It was called the Welcome Stranger and was found in 1869 in Moliagul.
After that we went to a river. It was so cold that we had to break the ice to look for gold. A few kids found some very small pieces of gold. We wondered if the teacher had put them in for us to find.
We left that afternoon on the long bus trip home. Everybody had a great time but we were very tired.
