一、动词-ing形式作定语 
动词-ing形式,即动名词和现在分词用作定语时,其功能和含义有所不同。
[先感知]
①No one is allowed to speak aloud in the reading room.
②He trained five times a week at the local swimming pool.
③You should adapt to the changing situation.
④The boy (that/who is) playing football on the playground is my younger brother.
⑤We met a group of children (who were) returning from school.
[会发现]
1.reading和swimming是 作定语;
2.changing是现在分词作 定语。
3.playing football on the playground和returning from school是现在分词短语作后置定语,相当于一个 从句。
动名词
前置
定语
[明规则]
1.动名词作定语修饰名词,说明被修饰名词的某种性能或用途,在意义上相当于“名词+for+doing”。
2.现在分词作定语时,它和被修饰词之间有逻辑上的主谓关系,可以表示正在进行的动作,也可以表示所修饰词的性质或特征等。
3.单个的现在分词作定语,常放在被修饰词前作前置定语;现在分词短语作定语时常放在被修饰词后作后置定语,相当于一个定语从句。  
[名师点津] 现在分词、过去分词和不定式作定语的一般区别:现在分词表示正在进行或习惯性的动作;过去分词表示被动或完成意义;不定式表示动作尚未发生。

二、动词-ing形式作表语 
作表语的现在分词和动名词在具体用法上也各有不同。
[先感知]
①The argument seems very convincing.
②Your speech is the most interesting and encouraging.
③Her job is keeping the lecture hall as clean as possible.
=Keeping the lecture hall as clean as possible is her job.
[会发现]
1.convincing, interesting, encouraging是 作表语,说明主语的特征。
2.keeping ... 是 作表语,此时主语和表语可以互换。
现在分词
动名词短语
[明规则]
1.现在分词作表语,往往具有形容词的性质,表示主语的性质、特征和状态,回答how的问题;动名词作表语具体说明主语的内容,回答what的问题。
2.动名词作表语时,表语和主语可以互换,现在分词作表语时不能互换位置。
3.作表语的现在分词前可以用very, quite, rather, greatly等副词修饰,也可以与more, the most连用,而动名词则不可以。
4.作表语的现在分词除了和be连用之外,还可以和其他系动词连用;而动名词只能和be连用。  
[名师点津] 不定式和动词-ed形式也可作表语,但不定式通常强调一次性的、具体的、将要发生的动作,动词-ed形式则表示被动、完成意义。

知能为先——必备知能一站明
(一)如何推测谈话双方的关系
要想了解谈话双方之间的关系,需要注意谈话双方是如何交谈的(例如,朋友之间通常称呼对方的名字),以及交谈中的一些特定的问题(例如“请给我账单好吗?”表示说话者是顾客)。这类题的答案或直接给出,或隐含在所说的内容中。因此,在听对话的同时,捕捉关键词和说话人的语气很关键。
[典例] (2022年全国甲卷听力第7题)

(二)语音同化
语音同化是英语口语发音中一种非常普遍的现象。在正常语流或快速语流中,说话者较难在极短时间内改变发音方法或部位,一个音受另一个相邻的音的影响,变成与它相同或相近的音,形成了语音同化现象。同化现象不只发生在两个词的边缘,也发生在同一个词的内部。
语音同化发生的形式可以分为几种,依据两个音被影响的方向,可分为“顺行同化”“逆行同化”和“交互同化”;清浊同化是被同化音的清浊属性发生清化或浊化,变得和同化音一致;同化的形式还可分为完全同化和部分同化。例如:

During the Mid-Autumn Festival in China, families gather to admire the shining moon and enjoy delicious mooncakes.
Customs play a significant role in festivals, but sometimes they can change over time. With the development of modern society and the spread of new ideas, some traditions may fade away and others may be established. One example is the typical Chinese Spring Festival custom of lighting firecrackers to drive away the evil spirits and celebrate the new year. Nowadays, many big cities have given up this custom in order to avoid air pollution. Another example is Halloween, which slowly became an exciting festival for children, in spite of its religious origins.
Festivals are becoming more and more commercial, with businesses taking advantage of the celebrations. Online shopping websites and social media apps have made it much easier for the public to spend more on gifts for their loved ones. Although some believe festivals should not be commercialised,others believe the increase in spending is good for the economy and public happiness.

A Special Appointment

The following year I got Christmas Eve duty again. At 9 pm sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr Lee and said, “You probably don't remember me, but last Christmas Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me.” He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left.
The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr and Mrs Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 pm, the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild.
Mr Lee, his family and I spent 13 Christmas Eves together. In the later years the staff all knew about the story and would work to give me time with him in the break room, where we spent a half-hour each Christmas Eve.
Last year I saw Mrs Lee alone in the hospital with a gift for me.Mrs Lee looked pale. She told me Mr Lee died from another heart attack two days ago. But he had never forgotten our appointment.
