②④as if/when引导的状语从句中,主从句主语一致,且从句谓语部分含有be动词,从句中的主语和be动词可省略;
③⑥⑦while或as ...as ...连接两个并列分句时,若主语不同,但主要动词相同,则可省略后面句子中的主要动词;
⑤介词的省略;
⑧suggest后接宾语从句时,从句中谓语用“should+do”,should可以省略;
⑨if虚拟条件句中,省略if时,句子需倒装。

为了避免重复或为了使句子更简练,在一些句子中常常省去一个或某几个成分,这种语法现象在英语中叫省略。
在英语句子中,常见的省略情况有以下几种:
一、简单句中的省略
[先感知]

(I) Beg your pardon.
请再说一遍。

[明规则]
1.省略主语:一般情况下,主语是不能省略的,但在祈使句或其他不容易引起歧义的情况下,特别是在口语中,主语常常省略,主要是祈使句中的you和疑问句中的主语。
2.省略宾语:当上、下或前后两个句子的宾语一致时,下句或后句常省略宾语。
3.省略主语和谓语(或谓语的一部分):在某些具体的场合下,主语和谓语都很明确,此时为了简化或显得亲切等,可将主语和谓语(或谓语的一部分)同时省略,只剩下表语、宾语、状语或其他成分。

[明规则]
在由and或but连接的并列句中,常省略一些重复的词或词组。
1.省略共同的主语或宾语。
2.若主语不同,而谓语部分的系动词、助动词或情态动词相同,则省略后面的系动词、助动词或情态动词。
3.若主语与谓语动词相同,则省略后面的主谓成分。
4.若主语不同,但主要动词及后续部分相同,则省略主要动词及后续部分。

三、复合句中的省略
1.状语从句的省略 
[先感知]

Metal expands when (it is) heated and contracts when (it is) cooled.

[会发现]
①省略了时间状语从句中的主语it和谓语动词is。
②省略了比较状语从句中的主语it和谓语动词is。
③省略了比较状语从句中的谓语动词runs。
④原因状语从句中的主语he和谓语动词was不能省略。
[明规则]
1.在when, while, if, as if, though, although, as, until, once, whether, unless, whenever等引导的状语从句中,当从句主语跟主句的主语相同且从句谓语中含有系动词be或从句的主语为it时,则从句中主语和be动词常被省略。
2.在than, as等引导的比较状语从句中常省略某些成分。
3.并非所有的状语从句都可以省略主语和be动词,由after, before, because等词引导的状语从句一般要改写成介词短语等,用动名词代替be动词。  
[名师点津] 省略句中的谓语动词和主语之间构成主动关系,则使用动词-ing形式;若构成被动关系,则使用动词-ed形式;若谓语动词表示的动作尚未发生,则使用不定式。

1.在限制性定语从句中,作宾语用的关系代词whom, which, that可省略,但whom, which紧跟在介词后时不能省略。
2.the way作先行词,后跟定语从句时,关系代词可以用in which, that或省略。

①hope后接that引导的宾语从句时, 可以省略。
②said后接多个宾语从句时,第一个that可以省略,其他的 不能省略。
③中 和前面从句中重复,需要省略。
[明规则]
1.及物动词后接宾语从句时,连接词that一般可以省略;但如果及物动词连接两个或两个以上that引导的宾语从句时,只有第一个that可以省略。
2.when, where, how和why引导的宾语从句省略时,有时可以仅保留引导词。

四、其他的省略情况
1.动词不定式的省略 
[先感知]
①You can't force him to answer the question if he's not ready to (answer the question).
如果他没有准备好回答这个问题,你不能强迫他。
②We often hear her sing an English song in the classroom.
→She is often heard to sing an English song in the classroom.
我们经常听见她在教室里唱英文歌。
③He likes to swim more than (to) skate.
比起溜冰他更喜欢游泳。
④He believes it important to study rather than to make friends.
他认为重要的是学习而不是交朋友。
⑤I would do it for you, but I don't know how to (do it for you).
我愿意为你做这件事,但是我不知道怎么去做。
⑥All he could do was nothing but wait and see.

⑦They didn't visit their parents as much as they ought to (visit their parents).

[明规则]
1.当不定式在形容词afraid, anxious, eager, glad, happy, ready, willing等后作状语时,to后的内容常省略。
2.某些使役动词,如:make, let, have等和感官动词,如:see, watch, notice, observe, hear等后面作宾补的不定式须省略to,但若这些动词用于被动语态时,则to不能省略。
3.并列的不定式可以省略后面的不定式to。但若两个不定式之间表示对比关系时,不能省略to。
4.介词but, except (除了) 前有实义动词do的某种形式时,后面的不定式不带to。
5.当不定式在be going to, be able to, have to, ought to, used to后作复合谓语时,不定式可省略。

①省略的不定式内容若含有作助动词用的have或be的任何形式时,to后要保留have或be。
②类似这样用法的还有动词短语ought to, be going to, be about to, be supposed to, have to, used to及形容词glad, happy, pleased, delighted等。

[名师点津] hope, guess, be afraid的否定形式只能用not的形式,不能用not ... so的形式。

3.介词的省略 
[先感知]
①The heavy rain prevented him (from) arriving there on time.

①固定搭配prevent ...from ...中, 介词from可以省略。
②时间状语中含有every,可以省略介词on。
[明规则]
1.一些与动词、名词或形容词搭配的介词常常可以省略,而保留介词后的动名词。常见的结构有:
①have difficulty/trouble (in) doing sth.
②be busy (in) doing sth.
③spend some time (in) doing sth.
④stop/prevent sb. (from) doing sth.
2.表示时间的介词at, on和in在next, last, this, these, yesterday, tomorrow, one, any, every, each, some等词之前时,一般省略。

知能为先——必备知能一站明
(一)如何记笔记
做笔记时,不要面面俱到,只需写下关键信息,如姓名、日期和数字等。它们往往是解题的关键信息。为了节省时间和空间,省略所有的冠词(a,an,the),并使用缩写。例如,新奥尔良用“N.O.”,因为用“bc”,年用“yrs”,和用“+”等等。
[典例] (2022年全国甲卷听力第5题)

M:Hello, we have a reservation in the name of Mr. Jones. Is there any table by the window

[分析] 首先根据题干中的关键词“Where”可知,这是一道询问地点的题,听时要仔细听有关地点的关键信息。听力材料中,we've got this corner table for you是解题的关键信息,故选C项。
(二)意群的停顿
1.意群:一个句子可以按照意义和语法结构分成几个部分,每个部分称为一个意群。意群可以用“/”表示。
划分意群的基本规则:
(1)冠词和名词 There is a coat.
(2)形容词和名词 It's my new dress.
(3)助动词和实义动词 He will come next Monday.
(4)系动词和表语 Tom looks happy.
(5)介词和它的宾语 He doesn't work on Saturday.
(6)动词不定式 It is hard to be a doctor.
(7)副词和动词、形容词和副词A week passed very quickly.
(8)分词短语 He is holding a book.
(9)主语、动词和宾语 Mary told me a secret.
(10)关系词与从句、连词及后面部分We sweat when it is hot.
2.气群:凡是一口气能说完或者读完的一个句子或句子的一大部分,称为一个气群。一个气群一般包括若干个意群,说话或者朗读时气长的人可念完一个很长的句子而不停顿,但最短的气群不得少于一个意群。气群用“//”表示。

3.停顿:长句中有短暂的停顿,借以调和呼吸,这是自然的现象,但停顿的地方必须恰到好处。通常在:(1)有标点符号的地方;(2)词组或意群之间。短语、从句等意群成一单位,但它们之间可以短暂停顿。如:

Today was my first day back in San Francisco after camping in the Redwood Forest and visiting the wine country of Napa Valley. I have to admit that it definitely feels good to be back in the city again. And what a city — a city that was able to rebuild itself after the earthquake that occurred in 1906. There are so many beautiful old buildings — many sitting on top of big hills, offering great views of the city, the ocean, and the Golden Gate Bridge.
My hotel is near downtown, in the Mission District, one of the oldest parts of the city. Many of the people living here are from Mexico or Central America. This district used to be a poor area of town, but is now a centre for art, music, and food. In fact, an art movement called the “Mission School” started here. It's influenced by graffiti art and comic art. I walked around looking at the street art for a few hours. It was quite modern and lively. Afterwards, I ate some delicious Mexican-Chinese noodles from a food truck. A real mix of cultures here!
In the afternoon, I headed to a local museum that showed the historical changes in California. I learnt that America got California from Mexico in 1848. In the same year, gold was discovered near San Francisco, which started a gold rush. Over 300,000 people came from all over the world to seek their fortune, and San Francisco quickly became a big city. Many Chinese arrived during this period. To earn a living, some opened up shops and restaurants in Chinatown. Many others found jobs on farms, joined the gold rush, or went to build the railway that joined California to the eastern region of the country. The museum did a really good job of showing how America was built by immigrants from different countries and cultures. When these immigrants left their countries, they carried a bit of home in their hearts, and built a new home here.
This evening, I went to Chinatown. There were so many good cafés and restaurants to choose from. I selected a Cantonese restaurant that served its food on beautiful china plates. What great food!
That's enough for today. Tomorrow evening, I'm going to a jazz bar in the Richmond District. Can't wait!

But things began to change as she was doing the chores.Brushing the puppy, she found it was a lot of fun with so many soap bubbles on the puppy as well as on her hands.Then it was on to yard work where Kayla helped to pick up sticks.She pretended the small sticks were basketballs, and shot them into a large trash can.So the work was done with great pleasure.Kayla felt proud to see how much better the yard looked.When she finished her meaningful chores, Kayla enjoyed relaxing in her tree house.The lemonade tasted wonderful after a hard day of work.
