When I was a teenager, I attended a six-week summer learning program at a college. The purpose of the program was to help kids get a taste of what college was like. We usually had a break in the afternoons. One afternoon, my friend Claude and I found an old basketball and headed to the playground for a game of one on one.
At the time, Claude was taller and stronger than me. He had an advantage in the game and I fell behind fast. Suddenly, something unexpected happened. Just as both of us jumped up to get the ball, Claude's elbow came down hard, right into my eye. I saw stars everywhere. The pain was terrible. Claude was very sorry and kept apologizing while I found myself laughing through the pain. I spent the next few days walking around with a black eye, but it was worth it. For years afterwards, I got a laugh whenever I joked with Claude about his elbow.
In our life, we all get an elbow to the eye from time to time. Our plans go wrong. Things work against us. Our ups become downs and twists and turns(迂回曲折) of life take us where they may. It is best to deal with it with laughter and forgiveness when this happens. In this way, you can turn your pain to joy, and you can learn and grow.
