(2022·安徽芜湖·八年级期中)Here comes 2022, the Year of the Tiger! For Chinese people, the tiger is the
king of all the animals. So in Chinese culture, tigers stand for being brave, strong and powerful! That’s why in
China, you can see pictures of tigers on the walls of temples(寺庙) and houses. They are to protect these
places from bad luck.
In ancient times, some great generals(将军)were called “tiger generals”. Usually, generals would be given
a tiger-shaped piece called hufu to send soldiers(士兵). Tigers also have a place in the lives of Chinese people.
Chinese babies often wear tiger hats and shoes which are made in the shape of a tiger’s head. Parents hope their
kids will grow to be as strong as little tigers. People make cloth tigers during the Dragon Boat Festival. It is said
that the “tigers” could “eat up” the bad animals and keep illness away. In some parts of China, people make
tiger-shaped buns(馍)when the new year comes.
Westerners also consider tigers as a symbol of Asia. Singapore, South Korea, China’s Hong Kong and
Taiwan were called “The Four Asian Tigers”. In the book Life of Pi, the Canadian writer chose a tiger as the
partner for the Indian boy Pi on his adventure(历险). French fashion brand(品牌)KENZO takes the tiger as
its main pattern when it tries to show Eastern elements(元素).
Tigers are my favorite animals. If you ask my mom, she’ll tell you that my best-loved toy while growing up
was my toy tiger, which I still treasure dearly to this day. As a young animal lover, I felt so sad that they were
endangered and I wanted to help protect them.

(2022·安徽合肥·八年级期中)It’s a common belief (相信) that fish can’t remember anything for longer
than seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that every moment in their lives would be like seeing the world for
the first time. But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have much better
memories than we used to think.
In the study, researchers from Mac Ewan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids
(丽鱼) to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They took the fish out and then waited for 12 days before
putting them back in the tank again. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place
where they first got food.
In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. But
there was no clear evidence (证据) until the latest findings.
Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to
survive (生存) in the wild. “If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains (容纳) safe food, they will be
able to go back to that area without putting their lives in danger.” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live
Science.
So next time you are watching your pet fish from outside the tank, perhaps you should feel closer to them —
they may remember who you are.
9.Why did the researchers carry out the research
A.To know if fish can find food easily.
B.To find out if fish have better memories.
C.To tell us fish can live for days without water.
D.To show fish can live long without eating things.
10.What does the underlined word “tank” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.A kind of fish food.
B.A kind of hiding place.

D.A container for keeping fish.

A.Fish know where to get food.
B.It’s easy for fish to live in the wild.
C.A good memory can make fish safer in the wild.
D.Fish are often in danger when they look for food.
(2022·江西赣州·八年级期中)Did you hear of dodos (渡渡鸟) The dodo was a kind of bird that was very
large. You might not think it was a bird at all because the dodo could not fly. It was a member of the chicken
family. It lived happily until people arrived. Sailors (水手) from Europe found those birds in the 16th century on
Mauritius Island (毛里求斯岛) in the Indian Ocean.
When the sailors found the strange birds that could not fly, they were surprised. The people from Europe on
Mauritius Island ate the birds and cut down the trees. The animals they brought with them ate the eggs and the
young. So no living dodos were found on the island in the following years. Unfortunately, they died out at last.
Later, the samples (标本) of some dodos were brought to England in the 17th century for the future study.
It’s said that people killed all the dodos. This was how the words “as dead as a dodo” came. It teaches us a
big lesson. If we are not able to get along with nature, we will lose the things more than we would expect. And we
should stop the activities that will be bad for the environment or other animals.
12.Why did the sailors feel surprised when they saw dodos
A.Because the dodo was a kind of bird that could not fly.

13.What is the right order about dodos

b. Sailors room Europe found dodos on Mauritius Island.

A.b-a-c-d B.d-c-b-a C.b-c-d-a D.b-c-a-d
14.What does the writer mainly want to tell us in the passage

C.The dodo was a kind of chicken. D.No living dodos were found.

Humans have many ways to say “hi” and “bye”. It’s a way to be polite. But did you know that apes also do
this
According to a new study, we have found this kind of behavior (行为) in animals for the first time. Many
animals greet each other, but they don’t say “goodbye” like apes do.
Scientists studied over 1,200 apes. Of course, they don’t say “What’s up ” like we do. They use body
language.
For example, they will touch each other or hold hands. They might also butt (顶) heads or just look at each
other. They do these things both before and after they spend time together. These greetings will be shorter if the
apes already know each other. Humans do this too.
Scientists say that the common ancestors (祖先) of apes and humans might have done this as well. Then they
passed down the habit to both of us.
