I’m sure many great people think about how they can make a difference in the world. In f 1 , sometimes little things can make a really big difference. I learned this l 2 one day five years ago with my father, when I was just acting like myself –– a nine-year-old kid.
Papa came home late from work after 9 p.m., and he l 3 even more tired than usual. His eyes were already half-closed. I followed him to his bedroom. Papa stepped up the stairs, slowly lifting his feet one after the other. I was a 4 that I would have to start pushing him. Fortunately, he made it to the bedroom on his own.
Papa sat down on the bed and started removing his shoes and socks.
“How was work ” I asked cheerfully. “Oh, it was OK,” he replied. “It’s just that I’m tired.” “Oh, um…you want me to leave ”
Papa gave me a tired s 5 that made me more comfortable. It made me feel like he wasn’t going to scold(责备)me, as he often did when I made some t 6 .
“No,” he said kindly, “of course I don’t want you to leave.”
I opened my mouth and started a 7 out the Disney movie Lilo & Stitch. Papa always loved it when I did that, and he s 8 laughing loudly. I was happy that I had made my father laugh so much. “Did you like it ” I asked. “Of course I did,” he said. “Did you know that w 9 you make me laugh, you make me feel a lot better ”
I was s 10 that I could really do a thing like that.

It was a cold afternoon. I was training a football team for first-graders. It was the day of our f 1 practice.
I seated the kids on a long bench on the grass. Any time I was training a new team, I spent a few minutes getting them to k 2 each other, each kid saying his name and the names of all the kids sitting to the left.
A few minutes later, I decided to put the kids to a test. Alex was chosen to start at the far left end of the bench, go up to each kid, say that kid’s n 3 and then shake his right hand.
Alex was doing well and he went down the row—Dylan, Micah, David, and Beau until he reached Ben. He said Ben’s name and reached out his right hand, but Ben just s 4 there, with his right hand hidden in his jacket.
“Ben, why don’t you let Alex shake your hand ” I asked. Ben stood up, and said, “But I don’t have the h 5 .” He pulled his jacket away from his right shoulder.
Ben’s arm ran from his right shoulder but his arm s 6 at the elbow(胳膊肘). No forearm, no hand, no fingers!
I got shocked(震惊) and couldn’t think of a 7 to say, but the little kids were unwilling to hide their curiosity(好奇心).
“Look at that,” said Alex.
“Hey, what happened to your arm ” another asked.
“Does it hurt ”
Ben took off his jacket to s 8 the kids what they all wanted to see. He explained to them that he had always been that way and that there was nothing s 9 . What he meant was that he wanted to be treated like everybody else.
From that day on, he was j 10 Ben, one of the players on the team.

We all cry for water when we are t 1 . But do you know in very hot, dry weather, plants also
