I grew up on a small farm. My father worked in the city. He was quiet. I didn't like him very much.
One day,I was told by my mother that he was sick. I learned that my father got blood cancer. As the cancer grows, the bones would look like cheese, and when they break, they may never heal(愈合). For the last year of his life, his whole day was rising from the bed and walking to his chair to sit and think.
He was in that chair when I came home one day. My mom and brother were out. He asked me to sit down. Then he told me about his life, and his family growing up. He had been speaking for maybe an hour when I realized that he was doing more than telling. He was asking to be forgiven(原谅). All that he needed was that.
When he died,I didn't return to school for a few days. On my first day back,I was standing in the gym hearing a familiar shout,“Michael!”It was Sam,a guy who had given us a lot of trouble over the years. I turned to face him and said,“What do you want ”The other boys didn't say a word as they waited for the beat.
“I heard your dad died.”
“Yes,”I quietly replied.
“I'm sorry.”
I was shocked. Those two words are how I have remembered him ever since.
What do you do when your“enemies”reveal that they are also human I think you either forgive and move forward or hold on to resentment(愤恨). I'm certainly not glad that my father got sick, but at the same time,I realize that if he didn't,I might never have come to love him.
