Lesson 38 The World Is a Big Place
Teaching aims:

It must be treated well for our children and for our children’s children, too!

教学思路：
本课时的教学内容是冀教版八年级下册英语第七单元的第二课时,主要涉及介绍人口和世界地理的情况。在授课之前先让学生通过网络书籍查阅有关世界人口和大洲大洋的知识。课上可以让学生通过小组合作的形式相互交流;教师通过幻灯片、图片向学生展示大洲大洋的照片,同时告诉学生如何用英语介绍这些地理知识,了解世界人口,了解大洲大洋。
Teaching process:
StepⅠ.Leading in
Show a picture of the earth and ask the students:
T: What can you see in the picture
Ss: It’s a ball./It’s a big ball./It’s beautiful.
T: It looks like a ball, but is it a real ball
S1: No. It’s the earth.
T: We live on a planet called earth. Earth is the only planet that we humans can live. What do you know about the earth
S2: Many forests, many mountains, many oceans...
T: OK ! This class we are going to learn something about the earth. Would you like to study together to master the facts about it
S: Yes. We will try !
T: There are eight planets in the picture. Can you see the earth in this picture
S3: Yes, but it is not very big.
T: Yes, it’s not the biggest one in space, but we all live on it. It’s large enough to hold us.
[设计意图]　利用学生学过的内容,以提问的方式开始谈论地球,轻松进入语境,进而介绍生词照片使学生感兴趣,运用学生所学的知识与照片相结合。
StepⅡ.Learning.
1.Show the teaching aims in this lesson.
2.Let students read the new words after the tape.
3.Show some pictures to teach the new words: planet, billion, total , increase, surface, Indian, Atlantic, Arctic
[设计意图]　利用投影片的展示,检查学生们对单词的预习情况，并对生词进行巩固学习。
Step Ⅲ. Listening
Listen to the tape and think about the following questions:
1.What do you know about the place where you live
2.How many continents and oceans are there in the world
After listening to the tape, let students translate the sentences:
1.Only about one third of our planet is land.
2.Oceans cover two thirds of the earth's surface.
Then ask the students to learn Fractional expression.
分子基数词，分母序数词，分子大于1， 分母加-s.
T: The world is a big place. How many continents and oceans are there in the world What are they
S1: Seven continents and four oceans.
S2: They are Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America , Australia and Antarctia.
S3: They are the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Arctic Ocean.
Show the pictures about continents and oceans, then ask the students to tell something about the facts that they know about continents and oceans.
Do exercise 3 in Let’s Do It. Let the students find the answers in pairs.
Get the class to read it aloud. Ss read it aloud. Focus on the stressed words, pronunciation and intonation.
[设计意图]　学生在听了细节之后,讲解分数表达法、七大洲和四大洋的知识，然后让学生继续朗读巩固,训练学生的语音语调,培养学生运用目标语言进行交际的能力。
StepⅥ.Reading
let the students read the passage again in groups. Then let the students fill in the blanks.
Show some slides with some phrases in the passage. Ask the students to learn
some knowledge about passive voice. Then do some exercise to train the
new knowledge.
[设计意图]　细读文章，学习短语要点，了解被动语态，进一步强化对新知识的学习掌握。
StepⅤ.Discussion
Let the students discuss how many problems the earth faces. And talk about how to protect the earth.
They can discuss the topic in groups.
[设计意图]　以学评教、强化落实。当堂检测主要是由本节内容组成的形成性评价,逐渐减少呈现句中的信息,让学生补充,让他们得到充分的训练。
StepⅥ.Homework
1.Finish Exercise. 2 in Let’s Do It.
2.Write a short passage about how to protect our only home — the earth.
