Seeing changes in China
①It was a warm spring day in 2021. Chen Beier, a reporter and TV presenter from Hong Kong, was on her way to a small village called Atule’er. The small village sits at the top of an 800-meter-high cliff (悬崖). People can only get up to it by climbing a 2.556-step steel ladder (钢梯). It is very dangerous.
②So, was Chen looking for adventure there The answer is no. The famous presenter was, instead, making a documentary.
③In February 2021, China reached an important goal. It got rid of poverty (摆脱贫困). Many people couldn’t believe this. After all, China has a large number of poor villages. In order to show the truth to people, Chen set out to make No Poverty Land.
④The trip turned out to be hard. When she was halfway up the ladder to Atule’er. For example. Chen felt so tired that she could hardly go any further. She was also afraid of heights. The villagers advised her to stop the climb, but the woman continued her climb.
⑤This steel ladder, in fact, is only six years old. Before it was built, the villagers had to face even bigger danger and use a rattan (藤条制成的) ladder. The government has also built houses for the villagers at the foot of the mountain. Through No Poverty Land, people can easily see how life in poor areas of China has been improved.
⑥China has changed a lot, but some people just find it hard to believe. Now, Chen has shown us what we can do about that: Don’t just tell people about the great changes; show them when you can.

Teen’s ‘wuxia’ world
While many teenagers are struggling (奋斗) to write articles for their exams, Jin Minzhe has already written a whole book.
The 15-year-old boy from Suzhou, Jiangsu, recently published (出版) his wuxia novel Ji Chi Jing Hong He Shan Yi(《几尺惊鸿河山意》). The story is set during the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-581). A young man lays down his pen and takes up a sword to fight for his homeland.
“I love Jin Yong’s wuxia stories,” Jin told Gusu Evening News. “I also love history. In the seventh grade, I traveled to Wuzhen, where Prince Xiao Tong from the Liang Dynasty once lived, and I was inspired(受启发) to write a wuxia story based on(以……为根据) him.”
In a video interview with Xinhua, Jin looks a little bit shy. But when it comes to writing, he becomes someone bold. He shared a lot of his writing experiences actively. “I wrote around the clock as my ideas kept coming. After about 20 days, I finished more than 300 pages,” Jin said.
Jin’s writing skills might come from his love of reading. In primary school, he reads four books every week. In junior high school, where schoolwork is heavy, he still reads three to four books a month.
“My father loves history, so we often talk about our reading experiences and share our different opinions,” Jin said. “My mom takes me to bookstores and writers’ lectures. She also took care of me when I wrote the book, reminding me not to stay up too late.”
Jin said literature(文学) gave him a sense of calm and freedom. “Nothing can stop me from reading and writing,” he said.

There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food, talking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived (睡眠不足). Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,00 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure (血压).
Why are so many people sleep-deprived Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as “lazy”. Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you’ll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert in sleep. He says, “Sleep is like a credit (信用) card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back.”
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said, “Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more.”

One of a Kind
A Very Large Tortoise(龟)
Giant tortoises are the biggest tortoises in the world. A long time ago, many giant tortoises lived on Pinta Island. Most tortoises need their shells to protect them. The giant tortoises on Pinta Island didn’t need their shells for this. They didn’t have predators(天敌).
One Rare Animal
Lonesome George was a giant tortoise. He was a very rare animal. He was the last tortoise of his kind in the world. Giant tortoises were not always rare. When dinosaurs(恐龙)lived, there were millions of giant tortoises. Many of them lived on Pinta Island.
Giant Tortoises Disappear
Many years ago, pirates(海盗)came to Pinta Island. Giant tortoises were good to eat. They took many away on their ships. Tortoises can live a long time with little food or water. So they were good food for pirates on long trips. Soon, there was only one left. This was Lonesome George.
An Amazing Discovery
It was very exciting to find Lonesome George. He was the only one of his kind in the world. Scientists thought he could have been seventy or eighty years old. This is not really old for a giant tortoise. Some can live to be two hundred years old.
A New Home for Lonesome George
Lonesome George couldn’t be left on Pinta Island. He was taken to a place where scientists could take care of him. There was a lot of space for him in his new home. Many people came to see Lonesome George. He really looked like an animal that lived with the dinosaurs.

As a teenager, school was difficult for me. I had a kind of attention disorder, which means I couldn’t direct my attention to what I was doing. So when everyone else in the class was centering their attention on tasks, I could not.
In my first reading class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all finished in 45 minutes. I immediately put up my hand and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to finish the task.”
She looked down at me through her glasses, saying, “You are not different from your classmates, young man.” With her encouragement, I tried. But I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students With thoughts running through my head, I found myself deeply attracted in reading and writing. I completed the task in less than 40 minutes. I realized that I was not different from others. I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problem, why should I ever give up
I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words, “See what you can do when you keep trying ”

Chinatown is the name given to an area in the middle of London. It is just between Leicester Square and Shaftsbury Avenue. Gerrard Street is at the center and is the most important street in the area. There is a large Chinese community(社区)with a lot of Chinese restaurants, Chinese supermarkets and shops in this street.
In the 1950s, it was a poor area and everything was very cheap. At the same time, the world rice market changed and thousands of farm workers in Hong Kong lost their jobs. They began arriving in London to look for work. They found jobs in the restaurants in this area. Many British people liked Chinese food, and the restaurants were popular.
These restaurant workers often worked 17 hours a day and had no time to learn English. As more Chinese arrived, more shops and businesses grew up. Wives came and joined their husbands and children came and joined their fathers. The community grew, and Chinatown was born.
In the 1970s and 1980s, British-born Chinese started to have a better education and this brought economic(经济的)success to the area. Many families moved out of Chinatown, and there was more space for businesses. Gerrard Street became a street only for visitors and was soon a popular place for tourists.
Now everyone knows about London’s Chinatown. During the Chinese New Year, the streets are seen with flags and thousands of Chinese go into the streets. For most of the year, though, Londoners and tourists go there mainly for the food in the Chinese restaurants. The best restaurants are the ones where the Chinese eat.

Who owns English
1 English is spoken by about 400 million people, mostly in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In Ghana, India and Singapore, English is used as a working language, for example, between bosses and secretaries, and between doctors and patients, although there are other languages for everyday use. In China and many other countries, English is the most important foreign language that children learn at school, because when they grow up, it will be quite possible for them to meet people from other countries. They will need a common language to communicate with each other. English is now used by nearly a quarter of the world’s population, and anywhere you go in the world, there is a good chance that you will meet someone who speaks English.
2 The reason why English is spoken everywhere is that in the nineteenth century, English became the language of world trade. And in the twentieth century, the US spread English through newspaper, television and films. It is now the common language for international travel, science, industry, and recently, information technology and the Internet.
3 It is also important to know that English has borrowed many words from other languages, for example, "restaurant" from French, "zero" from Arabic, "piano" from Italian, and "tofu" from Chinese.
4 Will the importance of English last As China continues to grow, many people think that Chinese will become as common as English by the middle of the twenty-first century. More and more schools in Europe are teaching Chinese as a foreign language, together with some European languages. However, most people still think that English will be used most around the world, at least for the next twenty or thirty years.
5 So who owns English The answer is everyone who speaks it-the British, the Indians and the Chinese all help make it a rich language. Even though we speak different types of English, we are all part of an international club. We all own English.

Though times have changed, falling asleep in class is still quite common among teenagers.
Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class An obvious(显而易见的) reason is lack(缺少) of sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep.
Homework is a daily meal for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night. A teenager who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all lead to teens having less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes teens lack sleep because of after-school jobs that are taken on to earn extra money for college, family cost, or simply for clothes.
Physical problems are another reason that can cause students to fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia(失眠), which may keep a student up at night, causing exhaustion(疲惫不堪) during class hours, is a serious problem that may require medical attention. Medical research also supports the idea that each person has a body clock that helps to decide his or her sleep pattern. Unluckily, these body clocks do not always work according to school timetables.
The effects of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to show your respect to teachers. In addition, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful effect of sleeping in class is missing important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up with failing classes.
Since teens are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all-too-common situation. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives with school and work, while still finding enough time to sleep.

80% of teens don't get enough exercise
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that 80% of the world's teens don't get enough exercise to live healthy lives. The report, which was published in the Lancet, was based on research done with students aged 11-17 in 146 different countries. The WHO has been studying teen activity levels since 2001 and reports that not much has changed since then.
The WHO says that kids should get at least an hour of medium to hard exercise every day. This could include walking, running, biking, dancing, playing sports, or many other activities.
More and more research is showing that exercise doesn't just help the body, it can help the brain, too, improving thinking, test scores, and school grades.
One big reason for the lack (不足) of activity in today's teens is technology, such as smartphones, computers, and TVs. Many teens find it very hard for them to pull themselves away from their devices (设备), whether they are texting, playing games, or watching videos or movies. The WHO warns that young people need to do less playing in the digital (数码的) world, and more playing in the real world.
Health experts want schools and families to encourage teens to be more active. Teens should take part in sports, whether on official teams or just playing around in the playground.
Experts believe that it's very important for young people to fall into these habits now, because the positive effects (积极影响) of those habits can carry on into adult (成年的) life. Studies show that the best way to tell how active someone will be as an adult is to look at how active he was as a teen.

Can you imagine a world without a writing system for your language It may be hard to picture it now, but a man named Sequoyah lived in such a world. Sequoyah was a member of a native American tribe(部落)the Cherokee. Cherokee people speak their own language, but for hundreds of years they did not have a system of writing. Without a writing system, the Cherokee had no newspapers or books before 1809.
Sequoyah was probably born around the year 1770 and lived with his mother in a small village in the mountains of Tennessee. When he grew up, he became a blacksmith(铁匠). When he was doing business with those “English-speaking people” he noticed that they used paper with marks to record their thoughts and ideas. Sequoyah called these pieces of paper with marks “talking leaves”. He began to wonder why people who speak Cherokee did not have a way to write down their words.
In 1809, Sequoyah decided to give the Cherokee their own “talking leaves”. At first he tried to make a different symbol for every word in the Cherokee language. But in that case, there would be so many symbols and too hard for people to remember, so he decided to make a picture for each syllable(音节). After much hard work, Sequoyah invented 85 symbols. In order to see whether it would work, he helped his six-year-old daughter Ayoka learn each symbol and found she could learn to read and write very quickly. Sequoyah’s invention was a success!
Before long, Sequoyah’s writing system had spread far and wide. Cherokee people living in all different parts of the country learned to read and write. In 1825, Sequoyah’s system was made the official written language for Cherokee people. To this day, Cherokee speakers still use Sequoyah’s writing system. In some parts of the United States, you can see street signs and billboards written in both English and Cherokee. Sequoyah will always be remembered for his important contribution to Cherokee people.
