Barton and Carl are best friends. They are both big fans of survival (生存) shows. Last week they got a chance to join one. In the show, five boys had to live on an island for five days all by themselves. Barton, Carl and three other boys got to the island by ship. There was nothing useful for them but some cameras. They would record the boys’ activities. If they wanted to give up, they could call for help in front of them.
The five boys made a plan. Barton and Carl went to look for food, while the other three made some tools and built a house. Carl was strong, but he didn’t want to go to the forest, because he is afraid of snakes. Barton had to lead Carl to follow him. They searched in the forest and collected some wild fruit. On the way they didn’t see snakes or the footprints of large animals. That was really good news. It meant they would be safe at night.

After watching a video of rescue (救援) workers taking a straw (吸管) away from a sea turtle’s nose, Cheng Wangdong wanted to do something to help. While still a student, Cheng realized the problem: there is too much plastic rubbish in the ocean, especially straws. So he decided to make a paper straw.
Plastic is a kind of useful material, and it is all around us. While some plastic objects are made to last for long, we also produce a lot of single-use plastic objects like bags, cups, packages(包裹) and drinking straws. We can see them almost everywhere around the world.
Cheng saw drinking straws as unnecessary plastic waste. Instead of telling people to stop using straws, he created a different kind of straw using paper. The straw comes in a flat (平的) paper package to keep it clean. The straw itself is then folded before it is used. After that, it becomes flat again and goes into a recycling bin with the package. Cheng’s straw has already won several prizes. He is now working to protect his idea before starting to sell his new paper straw. This simple but amazing invention can help stop the pollution in the ocean.

In many places, wildfires destroy(毁灭)thousands of square kilometers of forest and farmland each year. They can spread out of control and put homes and sometimes whole towns in danger. To keep the homes and towns safe, wild grass and brush(柴枝)must be cleared. This need has led to an interesting solution(办法), which has many advantages.
First, goats and sheep spend all their time eating grass. When they arrive in an area, they can clear an acre(英亩)in as little as three days. Besides, they are more environmentally friendly than machines, and they can clear grass on hills where people and machines cannot arrive.
Goats have been widely used in California for clearing brush around farms, neighborhoods, and cities. An example is the city of Anaheim, which is home to Disneyland. In the Charles E. Johnson Elementary School in New York, there is a special radio. It gives people warnings(警报) about bad weather.

Minutes later, the storm came. However, because of the warning of the radio and the quick work of the principal, no one was hurt.

The U.S. government hopes there will be more such success stories. It plans to give this kind of radio to all the 97,000 public schools in the country.

49.根据“This year’s play was Romeo and Juliet. Rick hoped to be Romeo in it.”可知,今年的戏剧是《罗密欧与朱丽叶》。Rick希望在里面扮演罗密欧。所以这里的“it”指代的是“Romeo and Juliet”。故填Romeo and Juliet。
故填gold will always shine。
