Have you ever had a gut feeling Do you know someone who thinks they may have a sixth sense Believe it or not, these are different ways to describe the same thing. It’s what people usually call intuition*
In many people’s opinion, there is something special about intuition. Some people may think that only women have intuition because they often hear the words like “women’s intuition or “a mother’s intuition”.
In fact, scientists believe that intuition has something to do with science. It means that we are able to make decisions without us even knowing it It doesn’t depend on who we are. Instead, it has to do with the hippocampus—a part of our brain*. Scientists think the hippocampus plays a part in building our intuition. It makes many decisions before we know it. It does so based on the information we learned from past experiences. And the more life experience we get, the stronger our intuition will become.
Let’s think about an example. Have you ever had the feeling that someone doesn’t tell the truth Unluckily, most people have. Imagine you found out later that you were right. This may make people think you have a psychic* ability. However, you weren’t mind reading. Instead, you were using intuition. Maybe your brain noticed that the person wasn’t making eye contact. Based on prior experience, it warned you—through intuition—that something wasn’t quite right.
So can we believe our intuition Often, the answer is yes. Following intuition can help people make good decisions. However, it’s always important to think twice before you act. If your intuition goes against facts, it may be best to think again.

Some of my earliest memories involve sitting with my dad in his study every night when he came home from the office. I’d watch as he put his personal things: his watch, wallet, comb and car keys in the same place on the table.
Dad’s comb was jade green. I heard he bought it when he married Mum, which meant the comb was two years older than I was. Every night, he would smile, hand me the comb and say “Nancy, be a good girl and help Daddy clean it, OK ” I was more than happy to do it.
A few years later, Dad left his job and started his own business. That was when things started to change. Dad’s business wasn’t doing so well. He didn’t come home as much as he used to. And when he did come home, it was always late and I’d already been in bed. I couldn’t understand why he must take the risk and place our family in trouble. Over the years, I stopped waiting for him to come home, and stopped going downstairs to check on him.
Now I’ve grown up and got my own job. Dad’s business has also started to get better. Yet the uncomfortable silence between Dad and me persisted.
Two days before my birthday this year, Dad came home early. As usual, I helped him carry his bags into his study. When I turned to leave, he said, “Nancy, would you like to help me clean my comb ” It’s a new brown comb. I didn’t even know when he had it. I went to brush the comb with an old toothbrush.
It hit me then: why, as a child, helping my dad clean his comb was such a joy. It meant that my dad was home early to spend the evening with Mum and me. It meant he would watch TV with us or play a few video games with me.
I passed the clean comb back to Dad. He looked at it and smiled. But this time, I noticed something different. My dad was getting old, yet his smile was still as heartwarming as before. It was the smile of a father who just wanted a good life for his family.
Dad carefully placed his comb on top of his wallet. After so many years, he still put his personal things in the same way.
I guess some things never change. And for that, I’m glad.
