Europe is one of the world's most varied continents in terms of culture, history and geographical
diversity. The following are some natural wonders in Europe that can take your breath away.
Norway:Svalbard
Svalbard represents one of the farthest regions of the world, as well as one of the most northernmost inhabited landmasses on earth. This region lies close to the Arctic Circle and most of the region is covered with glaciers, making it largely an untouched area. Svalbard is famous for its wildlife like polar bears, and was used as a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Croatia:Plitvice Lakes National Park
Made up of 16 beautiful lakes, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is a standout attraction in Croatia. It is well-known for its lakes, waterfalls and caves. The particular geographical position of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and its climate features have contributed to the appearance of many
natural phenomena and rich biodiversity within the area.
Ireland:Cliffs(悬崖)of Mother
Located on Ireland's coast, the amazing Cliffs of Mother are a sight to look at---the cliffs rise
about 120 metres above the water and run for about 14 kilometres. With seawater continuously
hitting the cliffs and heavy winds greeting you along the edge, this landscape represents the force
of nature in its purest form.
Switzerland:Swiss Alps
The Swiss Alps are one of the world's largest mountain ranges and cover about 60% of Switzer-
land's surface area. The mountains were formed millions of years ago and have some of the highest peaks in Europe. Today, nature-lovers come in droves to the Swiss Alps for hiking, skiing, cycling and swimming.

In Italy, specially trained dogs from the Italian School of Water Rescue Dogs (SICS)are now protecting the beaches and tourists. SICS units, consisting of one dog and one trainer, are tasked with watching over about 30 of the country's busiest beaches.
The SICS program is the brainchild of Ferruccio Pilenga, who got the idea that dogs would make
excellent lifeguards from watching his own Newfoundland,an extremely powerful swimmer named
Mas. "The dog pulled a water-filled boat with three people on board for half an hour," Pilenga said.
"A human cannot do that.”
The SICS program is a pretty arduous one. After 18 months of basic training, only those dogs successfully completing the required steps can move on to the more intensive(加强的)aspects of lifesaving techniques, such as jumping from helicopters and leaping from speeding boats.
While the success of the program can be partly attributed to the dogs' survival instincts that help
them find the safest route to shore, as well as their energy and ability to follow commands, Pilenga
believes the emotional component(成分)they bring to their work cannot be ignored.
"The presence of the dogs helps to lighten the situation," he said. "The biggest reward is the emotion that the dog and the owner feel at the moment of the rescue, which further unites that special bond. To be able to use a dog in a water rescue mission gives the rescuer a leg up. The rescuer who operates on his own is alone. But we are never alone. We are always in a team with our dog, so it's a six-legged unit. With my dog, I can save my energy and become a more effective rescuer," Pilenga said.
Italy is currently the only country to recognize certified doggie lifeguards. However, with training
centers to be set up in the near future in the U.S., Germany, Switzerland, and the Azores, the SICS
program is looking to spread its safety net to wider waters.
24.What inspired Pilenga to come up with the SICS program
A.His adventures with Mas. B.His close relationship with Mas.
C.Mas's ability to follow commands. D.Mas's amazing rescue performance.
25.What does the underlined word"arduous"in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Secure. B.Difficult. C.Popular. D.Interesting.
26.What impresses Pilenga most about doggie lifeguards
A.Their gentle character. B.Their quick reaction to changes.
C.Their outstanding swimming ability. D.Their emotional support for rescuers.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Human lifeguards will be replaced by dogs soon.
B.The SICS program brings about heated debates.
C.Doggie lifeguards will play their roles in more places.
D.Dogs will receive longer training to become lifeguards.
C
Have you ever imagined your simple T-shirt could act as an air conditioner on those hot summer
days Thanks to a discovery, that possibility is getting closer and the T-shirt may soon be found
hanging from the racks(架子)of your favorite clothing brands.
Its inventors, Ma Yaoguang and Tao Guangming, took a completely new approach. They designed a special textile(纺织品)that can take in body heat and then send out the energy. This textile cools both the objects and their surroundings through a technique that is known as radiative
cooling. This means that even when it looks like you are wearing a regular shirt, you are actually
wearing a device(设备)that works like a mirror.
Although the technique is not new and has been used for years to design roofs, plastic films and special paints, its use in the textile industry for the benefit of wearers is what makes it so exciting and unique. That is because, in the past, the available methods of dealing with heat through clothes were limited to suggestions on wearing light colors and choosing breathable textiles. But even when these tips can actually help you feel cool, they are simply not enough in the hottest season. The new textile, however, can reflect UV, visible light and near-infrared light(NIR),which can contribute to the cooling process. So this discovery represents a real advance.
Right now, researchers still need to test the new approach to determine how effectively the new textile works while the wearers are standing or walking, and not directly facing the sky, like in their experiments. They also need to examine and measure how well it works when T-shirts are not in close contact with the skin. But it's still a great success.
The inventors are now looking out for clothing brands that are interested in using their textile.
"The new material will increase clothing manufacturing costs by just 10 percent. We can make it with mass production, which means everybody can get a T-shirt and the cost is basically the same
as their old stuff's," Yaoguang said. "It can benefit everybody.”
What is the main function of the new textile
A.Keeping wearers cool in the heat. B.Adjusting wearers' body temperatures.
C.Collecting wearers' health information. D.Monitoring wearers' preference for materials.
29.What is stressed about the research of the new textile
A.It proved the harm of NIR to human skins. B.It ignored textile usage in harsh conditions.
C.It failed to meet the wearers' expectations. D.It made a breakthrough in the textile industry.
30.Further research of the new textile will focus on .
A.how to make clothes from the textile
B.the secret of the textile's special feature
C.whether the textile will be applied to other fields
D.the textile's performance in different conditions
31.How does Yaoguang consider the cooling T-shirts
A.Hard-wearing. B.Cost-effective.
C.Quite fashionable. D.Extremely comfortable.
D
If you have heard about a cat called Gyra, you may be wondering why people say it's scary and
deadly. Actually, the African black-footed cat is known to be deadly for its number of kills per
night. For example, it can kill more of its prey(猎物)in one night than a bigger cat, such as a
leopard, would kill in months.
Often when you imagine a deadly cat from Africa, you may think of a leopard or another big
cat. But the black-footed cat is unusual because its deadly nature is packed into a small body. It is
the smallest wild cat in Africa, having a head-and-body length of 35-52 cm.
The black-footed cat nicknamed Gyra was followed by the BBC for an interesting look into the behavior of this species of cat. Black-footed cats live in Africa but it may be hard to find one because of their small number. However, the BBC show shone a light on them, which may help them to get some aid to survive longer as a species. One could also argue that more attention could make bad people try to find them, but hopefully, more good than harm will come from it.
The interesting fact about these cats is that you may imagine them to have obvious black-colored feet but actually only the bottom surfaces of their feet are black. In fact, they are stripy(有条纹的) and fit well into their native surroundings, so they are good at hiding. These cats do look cute. To passers-by, they would look no different from a common domestic(家养的)cat without special hunting skills, and this is one of their biggest tricks.
Black-footed cats are not domesticated at all. You are unlikely to see a black-footed cat eating
some cat treats eagerly anytime soon. The reality is that they would probably reject such a treat because they would not identify anything that has not been freshly killed as an acceptable food.
32.Why is the black-footed cat considered to be deadly
A.It has a large size. B.It hunts very quickly.
C.Its feet are poisonous. D.It attacks humans at night.
33.What is the author's attitude towards the BBC's following the cat
A.Positive. B.Shocked.
C.Doubtful. D.Disapproving(不赞同的).
34.What is mainly mentioned about the black-footed cat in Paragraph 4
A.Its imagination is excellent. B.It likes playing tricks on passers-by.
C.It often hides itself from domestic cats. D.Its appearance contributes to its survival skills.
35.Why do black-footed cats generally refuse cat treats
A.They find cat treats dangerous. B.They want to keep away from humans.
C.Cat treats fail to suit their dietary preference. D.Cat treats make them less active in hunting

Humans have flown to the Moon and may even make it to Mars. But providing clean water to all
(56) (remain)a challenge. The World Health Organization says that many people still do not have easy access to clean water. While desalinating(淡化)ocean water is an obvious solution, the current process is both expensive and (57) (harm)to the environment. Now, some students may have found(58) cheaper, more sustainable way to change seawater into drinkable water.
Three students came up with the idea of WaterPod after(59) (observe)the hardships of some groups like the Sama-Bajau. While the ocean provides them with plenty of food, they often have to barter(以货换货)with nearby communities(60) (get)fresh water.
WaterPod(61) (design)to draw water from the sea with minimal salt intake. The device can work as an individual unit of water desalination. Its design also allows for the

There's a special boy in my son's class. Everyone thinks he is a bad kid. I've heard that he talks loudly,.disrupts(扰乱)the class with bursts of negative comments, and doesn't participate in groups. He also stands out as the tallest. Other parents tell his mother they're scared of him. Yet he has never been physically aggressive(好斗的). Sometimes he even shows kindness to others in
need of help.
I'll call him Joe. Most parents and kids don't know Joe has Asperger syndrome.People with the disease must learn about socially proper behavior. It's very hard for Joe to control his social behavior. He has worked hard since second grade. However, he has few friends who support him with positive comments.
Joe is in the highest-level math and reading classes. He wanted to join an activity club in school, but parent volunteers refused him. They didn't acknowledge(承认)that he had been working hard
to fit into the school's social networks. I wish those parents had seen Joe walking home from school one cold winter day in January and how he had offered his help warmly. Driving by, I saw him run and kneel down by a little girl lying on the ground.
Joe brushed the hair from her eyes and smiled. She smiled back through tears, having slipped and fallen on the ice. Joe took off his coat and spread it out, and then he helped her move to sit on it. He also gathered her belongings and put them on his coat. He wiped the snow from her knees and hands, moving her arms to check for injury. Then Joe helped her up, took her hand and walked her home. He carried her pack and then rang her doorbell. When her sister rushed her inside, the little girl smiled back at Joe. Then he set her pack down by the door and walked home happily.
Paragraph 1:
I stopped by Joe's house later.
Paragraph 2:
His mother expressed gratitude to me as she showed me to the door.
