Wouldn't it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, technology policy expert Alec Ross argued that, within a decade or so, we would be able to communicate with one another via small earpieces with built-in microphones. That's because technological progress is extremely rapid. It's only a matter of time. Indeed, some parents are so convinced that this technology is imminent that they're wondering if their kids should learn a second language.
It's true that an increase in the quantity and accuracy of the data loaded into computers will make them cleverer at translating "No es bueno dormir mucho" into "It's not good to sleep too much". Replacing a word with its equivalent in the target language is actually the easy part of a translator's job. But even this seems to be a discouraging task for computers.
It's so difficult for computers because translation doesn't — or shouldn't — involve simply translating words, sentences or paragraphs. Rather, it's about translating meaning. And in order to infer meaning from a specific expression, humans have to interpret a mass of information at the same time. Think about all the related clues that go into understanding an expression: volume, gesture, situations, and even your culture. All are likely to convey as much meaning as the words you use.
Therefore, we should be very skeptical of a machine that is unable to interpret the world around us. If people from different cultures can offend each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better Unless engineers actually find a way to breathe a soul into a computer, undoubtedly when it comes to conveying and interpreting meaning using a natural language, a machine will never fully take our place.
1.What does the underlined word "imminent" in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Ready. B.Approaching. C.Unpractical. D.Confusing.
2.Why is it hard for computers to replace a word with its equivalent
A.Their data is not adequate enough. B.The real meaning of words can vary.
C.Their accuracy needs big improvement. D.A soul hasn't been breathed in them.
3.What view does the author hold about translation
A.Proper translation can be tough for humans.
B.Slight distinctions matter little in translation.
C.Some machines will interpret our world properly.
D.Cultures deserve more attention than words used.
4.What is the best title for the text
A.An Expert's Precise Prediction B.The Complexity of Translation
C.Who Will Be a Better Translator D.Will the Language Barrier Actually Fall
C
Craig Blackburn, a father and car fan, built a Batmobile for his son's hope of using the vehicle to brighten the lives of sick children. And now he hopes to use it for more than just his son's hope after seeing the children's reaction to the Batmobile.
Based on the number of failures he had seen in car enthusiast groups, he estimated that only about one in fifty attempted constructions was actually finished and he realized what a slim chance he had.
Mr. Blackburn started the project at the beginning of 2015 after hearing a friend in the US was doing the same thing. It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before he picked a friends brains who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car. With the help of his friend, Mr. Blackburn built the Batmobile in 18 months with the cost reaching six figures.
Mr. Blackburn hoped to add a flamethrower(喷火器)to the back of the vehicle and said he had thought about building the Tumbler, a vehicle that was used by Batman in the film The Dark Knight. Though Mr. Blackburn encountered plenty of difficulties to get over during the construction, in September 2016, the car made its first show at the Carnival of Flowers in Toowoomba.
"It was great. It was so good to see kids' and adults' excitement at seeing the Batmobile," Mr. Blackburn said. As a result, the car lovers hope to make the car work on the roads as soon as possible, so Mr. Blackburn can visit sick children and take them out with his son.
1.What is Blackburn's initial purpose of making the Batmobile
A.To realize his son's dream.
B.To donate it to sick children.
C.To show his respect for the film The Dark Knight.
D.To show off at the Carnival of Flowers.
2.How did Blackburn feel about the car-making at first
A.Hopeful. B.Confused. C.Impossible. D.Unsure.
3.How did Blackburn's friend help him
A.By making an outer shell for him.
B.By offering him financial support.
C.By sharing the knowledge of building cars.
D.By telling him the background of the car factory.
4.What is the car lovers' expectation of the Batmobile
A.It will be driven soon on the roads. B.It can be displayed around the world.
C.It can change the lives of sick children. D.It will appear in the next film about Batman.
D
Would you save a woman, a child or a dog in a car crash An experiment has investigated human morality (道德观) and ranked countries based on who they would save in the event of a certain death situation.
The findings show the value of life varies according to different countries. French people, for example, are far more likely to save women than men. Lithuania ranks in the top 10 for saving both the young and the healthy. The four characters most people saved in the experiment are a baby, a little girl, a little boy and a pregnant woman.
The experiment put forward difficult ethical (伦理的) decisions such as choosing between the lives of a family of four crossing the road and a group of old people going the other way. Quandaries(两难境地) like this will one day be faced by autonomous vehicles that will be programmed with rules that place value on human life.
Tests into the moral decisions involving almost forty million people around the world, including the English, have found that the lives of women and men are widely held in equal regard. The French however resist the trend as they think the lives of women have far more weight than those of men.
Dr Edmond Awad, of the MIT Media Lab, who is the lead author, said, "The study is basically trying to understand the kinds of moral decisions that driverless cars might have to turn to. We don't know yet how they should do that." He added, "we find that there are three elements that people seem to approve of the most."
"These are that humans are saved over animals, that many people are saved rather than a few, and that the young are saved rather than the old."
Dr Awad added, "The main preferences are to some degree universally agreed upon. But the degree to which they agree with this varies among different groups or countries."
1.According to Para. 2, which of the following is least likely to be saved in danger
A.A little girl. B.A little boy. C.A pregnant woman. D.An old man.
2.Why did the experiment come up with different ethical decisions
A.The value should be placed on human life.
B.It's very interesting to do this kind of experiment.
C.Self-driving cars will one day face the same decisions.
D.It's very dangerous for a family of four to cross the road.
3.In which aspect is France different from other countries on their decision
A.It treats lives of women and men equally. B.It thinks the lives of the young come first.
C.It attaches more value to women's lives. D.It shows extraordinary respect for the old.
4.What can we know about the three elements found by Dr. Awad's team
A.Animals are saved over humans.
B.The three elements are equally agreed upon.
C.The lives of the old are above those of the young.
D.The lives of many people will be considered first.

Whenever I travel and get on the plane, I usually carry two bags. A big handbag or a tote, and a small shoulder bag. The small shoulder bag is where I put the important stuff, like my passport, so I could take it with me wherever I go. I had a 7-hour layover in Stockholm for my flight to Barcelona. It was enough time to visit the old city and come back to the airport. I was on my way to purchase a train ticket when I realized my shoulder bag was missing...I have never been so scared in my life. I felt stuck. Without a passport, I couldn't go back home to the US and I couldn't move forward to my final destination in Spain either.
The only thing I could think of was to go back to the arrival gate. I went back to the sitting area and looked around, but it was nowhere to be found. I saw the lady who sat beside me on the plane and asked her if she had seen it and unfortunately, she said no. There was a deli(熟食店) stand right next to the safety fence in the waiting area, so I asked the deli clerk if he had seen anything and to my surprise, he said yes! He said he had given it to an airport employee though. I explained to the first airport employee that I saw what happened, and she immediately called someone for me, as she was already aware of the situation.
After a short session of waiting, I saw two men in uniform walking towards me and one of them holding my bag. He asked me a couple of questions just to make sure I was the right person and after I answered correctly, he handed it back to me...I was so grateful! I could not stop thanking him. I realized the reason why I lost it was that the strap broke off and it fell on the floor. I went back to the food clerk to thank him too and to ask how he found it.
Paragraph 1:
The food clerk looked at me and told me about that. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
After I opened the bag, I saw everything still in the bag, including the $500 in cash. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If people from different cultures can offend each other without realizing it, how can we expect a machine to do better"可以推测出,准确的翻译对于人来说很难。故选A。
Wouldn't it be wonderful to travel to a foreign country without having to worry about the headache of communicating in a different language"可知,本文主要讨论了语言障碍会不会变小的问题。故选D。
C
根据文章第一段中的 "Craig Blackburn, a father and car fan, built a Batmobile for his son's hope of using the vehicle to brighten the lives of sick children" 可知,Craig Blackburn 的儿子想用蝙蝠车来点亮患病儿童的生活,而 Blackburn 为了实现儿子的梦想制造了蝙蝠车。故选A项。
根据文章第二段内容 "Based on the number of failures he had seen... he realized what a slim chance he had" 可知,根据 Blackburn 在汽车爱好者组织中看到的失败次数,他估计50辆尝试制造的汽车中大概只有一辆可以真正完成,他意识到自己成功的机会渺茫。
根据文章第三段中的 "It started with importing an outer shell overseas, before he picked a friend's brains who had a background as a worker in a car factory to gain knowledge of how to build the car" 可知,他的朋友是通过分享制造汽车的知识帮助他的。故选C项。

由第三段的内容尤其是 "Quandaries (两难境地) like this will one day be faced by autonomous vehicles that will be programmed with rules that place value on human life" 可知选A。
由第四段中的 "The French however resist the trend as they think the lives of women have far more weight than those of men" 可知,在法国,人们更重视女性的生命。
The most proper number of chews per bite is unclear"可知,目前还不清楚每咬一口(食物)最正确的咀嚼次数,此处承接上文,讲的还是关于咀嚼次数的内容,并与上文形成转折关系,故G项符合语境。
③根据本空后的"but drinking less coffee can help you feel more energetic in the long term"可知,长期来看,少喝点咖啡有助于你感到更有活力,根据连词 but可知前后两句在语义上存在转折关系,故D项(减少你对它的依赖听起来可怕)符合语境。
1-5.BDACA; 6-10.CDBCB; 11-15.BADBD
根据前文中的 "suddenly I saw this man running towards me" 可知,William Green 看到一个人突然向他跑过来,再结合后文那个人抢走了他的自行车可推测出,这里是指窃贼将 William Green 推开。故选B。
2.根据后文中的 "The burglar tried to cycle away" 可知,窃贼抢走的是自行车。故选D。
3.根据后文中的 "as he knew he would be no match in a fight for the man" 可知,William Green 知道自己不是窃贼的对手,所以推测出此处指他没有反抗。故选A。resist “抵抗”; refuse “拒绝”;withdraw “撤退”;obey “服从,遵守”。
故选A。
9.根据前文中的 "suddenly I saw this man running towards me" 可知,窃贼跑向 Green 先生并将他推开,说明 Green 先生近距离地看到了窃贼的样子。故选C。
故选A。
上文中的 "The cartoon was a perfect 11 of the robber" 是提示。
答案:①where ②for ③is ④reflecting ⑤popularity ⑥customs ⑦other ⑧have been inherited ⑨the ⑩poetic
故填 where。
故填for。
61 percent of the population为主语,表示整体,为单数概念,be动词为is.故填 is。
根据“for more than one thousand years”可知,本句为现在完成时,主语festivals与谓语 inherit为被动关系,所以本句为现在完成时的被动语态。故填 have been inherited。
故填 the。

Looking forward to meeting you.

答案:
Paragraph 1:
The food clerk looked at me and told me about that. He said someone picked a bag up on the floor right in front of the stand, waiting for the owner for a long time. However, no one came to get it. How happy I felt at that time.
Paragraph 2:
After I opened the bag, I saw everything still in the bag, including the $ 500 in cash. I understood them returning my passport out of pity, but they did not have to return the cash. The three different people had a chance to take it, the person who found it on the floor, the food clerk, and the airport employee. However, none of them did so. I was very fortunate that there were so many kind people. Therefore, let's be kind, and the world will be more wonderful.
