Everywhere inside Valerie Tolman's home in Missouri City are signs that she has a big heart. There are family photos, including those of two biological and two adopted children who are all now grown. Her two rescue dogs, Ivy and Ellie, are close by and, in an upstairs bedroom, are four kittens she's looking after. Her love of animals and passion for helping strays(走失的宠物) find homes earned her the Missouri City Volunteer of the Year award in 2017.
Tolman, a former newspaper reporter and software-industry analyst, started the volunteer program at the Missouri City Animal Shelter in 2014 after she retired. She later formed the Friends of the Missouri City Animal Shelter, a non-profit organization to expand the group's efforts to keep animals healthy, alive and adoptable. "I like living things, and it breaks my heart to think something is suffering—animals or humans," Tolman said.
She even challenged city officials about the lack of funding(资金) for the shelter, and encouraged the public to complain in letters and emails to the city council. Eventually, the council budgeted $250,000 for the shelter. "I fought city hall and won," she said. "The animals are in such better shape. I'm proud of that."
But she's most proud of her efforts to send high school students from low-income families to college. She and her husband Davis Tolman,a retired petroleum geologist, started a scholarship for first-generation college students in 2001. Tolman said 51 students have received full tuition(学费), including books, through the program. Although the graduation rate of the scholarship receivers is 54 percent, Tolman said all of the students tended to become successful in life simply because they attended college. Most of the students are the first in their families to go to college.
"It has a ripple effect, and even though some may not finish, there is a feeling that anything is possible," she said. "We now have nurses, teachers and engineers because of this program."

Recently I was visiting some websites when I came across a collection of strange beach photos where everyone had a cloth wall surrounding their little patch of sand. I had never seen anything like that before, and I was intrigued, so I started surfing the Internet to look for all sorts of phrases that might throw light on the mystery of Polish beach separators.
I found a site on Poland's affairs that covered this "phenomenon" quite exactly. According to the site, beach separators have been part of Polish beach-going culture for a long time, but have recently been getting a lot of attention online, after foreign tourists started posting photos on social networks.
Beach separators vary in size according to the size of the group. You'll see tiny ones only surrounding the space around a single beach towel, and giant ones separating a large part of the beach. They aren't designed to protect their users away from prying eyes. It's no secret that strong winds are very common on the shores of the Baltic Sea, so they were originally meant to allow beach-goers to enjoy sunbathing without having their belongings blown away or sand blown in their faces.
However, in recent years, people have begun criticizing them. During the summer, beach separators are placed so close to each other that a person can hardly pass between them, let alone find a place to put their own beach towels. This creates a problem for foreign tourists unfamiliar with them, who just want a place to lie down on the sand. And thus they can easily create all kinds of conflicts due to lack of space. For example, some people leave the beach for hours but leave their separators in place to make sure that their space doesn't get occupied by someone else.
Though I have visited a fair number of seaside resorts(度假胜地) across Europe, I hope that I will go to visit it one day .

I love charity shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won't find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.
The first charity shop in the modern form we know today was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity's appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful that it had been flooded with donations. They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children's books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don't encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.
The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than 110 million a year, funding(资助) medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment.

Amber has a degree in business management and economics. She put her skills to good use when she spent eleven months in Cambodia through World Hope International as a volunteer working with a local microfinance(小额信贷) company to help the poor get financial services.
Amber's first few weeks in Cambodia were busy and difficult as she tried to learn the language, understand the culture, and get used to her new surroundings. Her volunteer service involved working with a local micro-finance company. In addition to writing plans, preparing international marketing materials, and building donor(捐赠人) relations, Amber met with company clients. During these visits she learned how the small loans they received transformed their lives. She learned first-hand the benefits of micro-finance, which by providing farmers and small-business owners with affordable working capital (such as money to buy a sewing machine) helped them to earn their way out of poverty.
"It never stopped amazing me when a client would show me a new home that was built because of a loan he received or the way a client's business had improved and thus allowed his children to be sent to school," Amber said.
Amber recalled that one client called Paul walked her all around his house, pointing to what he had done with each of the eight loans he'd received. He explained how every loan had improved his family's quality of life. Amber said he was one of the hardest working men she had ever met. He had suffered greatly in the Cambodian Civil War and became disabled, but not once did he let it kill his dreams of realising a better life for his family. His latest purchaser sound system that he rented out for weddings and other parties doubled his income.
Amber said, "Living and working in Cambodia helped me see the world in new ways and made me aware of the hardship and suffering that many people around the world face every day. Those eleven months were some of the most meaningful months of my life."

Recently I was visiting some websites when I came across a collection of strange beach photos where everyone had a cloth wall surrounding their little patch of sand. I had never seen anything like that before, and I was intrigued, so I started surfing the Internet to look for all sorts of phrases that might throw light on the mystery of Polish beach separators.
I found a site on Poland's affairs that covered this "phenomenon" quite exactly. According to the site, beach separators have been part of Polish beach-going culture for a long time, but have recently been getting a lot of attention online, after foreign tourists started posting photos on social networks.
Beach separators vary in size according to the size of the group. You'll see tiny ones only surrounding the space around a single beach towel, and giant ones separating a large part of the beach. They aren't designed to protect their users away from prying eyes. It's no secret that strong winds are very common on the shores of the Baltic Sea, so they were originally meant to allow beach-goers to enjoy sunbathing without having their belongings blown away or sand blown in their faces.
However, in recent years, people have begun criticizing them. During the summer, beach separators are placed so close to each other that a person can hardly pass between them, let alone find a place to put their own beach towels. This creates a problem for foreign tourists unfamiliar with them, who just want a place to lie down on the sand. And thus they can easily create all kinds of conflicts due to lack of space. I love charity shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won't find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods.
The first charity shop in the modern form we know today was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charity's appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful that it had been flooded with donations. They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find children's books, all 10 or 20 pence each.
Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they don't encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open.

Amber has a degree in business management and economics. She put her skills to good use when she spent eleven months in Cambodia through World Hope International as a volunteer working with a local microfinance(小额信贷) company to help the poor get financial services.
