Unit 4 Adversity and Courage
第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
In the 1960s, while studying the volcanic history of Yellowstone National Park, Bob Christiansen became puzzled about something that, oddly, had not troubled anyone before: he couldn't find the park's volcano. It had been known for a long time that Yellowstone was volcanic in nature—that's what accounted for all its hot springs and other steamy features. But Christiansen couldn't find the Yellowstone volcano anywhere.
Most of us, when we talk about volcanoes, think of the classic cone(圆锥体) shapes of a Fuji or Kilimanjaro, which are created when erupting magma(岩浆) piles up. These can form remarkably quickly. In 1943, a Mexican farmer was surprised to see smoke rising from a small part of his land. In one week he was the confused owner of a cone five hundred feet high. Within two years it had topped out at almost fourteen hundred feet and was more than half a mile across. Altogether there are some ten thousand of these volcanoes on Earth, all but a few hundred of them extinct. There is, however, a second less known type of volcano that doesn't involve mountain building. These are volcanoes so explosive that they burst open in a single big crack, leaving behind a vast hole, the caldera. Yellowstone obviously was of this second type, but Christiansen couldn't find the caldera anywhere.
Just at this time NASA decided to test some new high-altitude cameras by taking photographs of Yellowstone. A thoughtful official passed on some of the copies to the park authorities on the assumption that they might make nice blow-up for one of the visitors' centers. As soon as Christiansen saw the photos, he realized why he had failed to spot the caldera: almost the whole park—2.2 million acres—was caldera. The explosion had left a hole more than forty miles across—much too huge to be seen from anywhere at ground level. At some time in the past Yellowstone must have blown up with a violence far beyond the scale of anything known to humans.
1.What puzzled Christiansen when he was studying Yellowstone
A.Its complicated geographical features. B.Its ever-lasting influence on tourism.
C.The mysterious history of the park. D.The exact location of the volcano.
2.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A.The shapes of volcanoes. B.The impacts of volcanoes.
C.The activities of volcanoes. D.The heights of volcanoes.
3.What does the underlined word "blow-up" in the last paragraph most probably mean
A.Hot-air balloon. B.Digital camera.
C.Big photograph. D.Bird's view.

Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his time at Hebron High School in Texas. But when he learned that the school district was going to offer a Chinese class, he quickly changed his mind.
"I think Chinese would be beneficial than Latin," said Cheatham, who is now in his second year of studying the language.
He speaks Chinese to order food at Chinese restaurants and reads social media posts from his Chinese-speaking friends. While it's a difficult language to master, the high school student, who plans to study computer engineering, thinks it will be important for his career. "Chinese is a good language to know, especially with China becoming a growing power," he said.
Many experts agree that proficiency(熟练) in a language spoken by about 1.4 billion people worldwide will give American students an edge in the global economy.
"People's interest in Chinese is growing fast," said Marty Abbott, director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. "We're seeing it in all parts of the country."
Abbott predicts that as many as 100,000 students are now studying Chinese in public and private schools, throughout the US. She said the US government had designated(指定) Chinese as an "important needs" language and provided professional development programs for teachers. "Our government wants to increase our language ability for national security and economic competitiveness," Abbott added.
At the same time, the Chinese government is spreading knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes set up in many US states. For example, the Confucius Institute at the University of Texas in Dallas has been the home of a Confucius Institute for more than 10 years. It sponsors Confucius Classrooms at 21 local public and private schools, where tens of thousands of students are learning Chinese.
1.Why did Thomas Cheatham decide to study Chinese instead of Latin
A.Chinese was easier to learn than Latin.
B.Chinese could be helpful to his future career.
C.Chinese might help him learn more about China.
D.Chinese could enable him to study computer engineering.
2.The underlined word "edge" in Paragraph 4 probably means "_____".
A.a slight advantage B.the outside pressure
C.a sharp voice D.an exciting quality
3.What can we learn from Marty Abbott's words
A.Chinese should be taught in classrooms throughout the US.
B.Those skilled at Chinese will be the most competitive in the future.
C.The US government's policy helps popularize Chinese in the US.
D.Americans learn Chinese because they worry about their national security.
4.What does the author mainly talk about in this passage
A.The rising popularity of Chinese among American students.
B.The great benefits of learning Chinese for American students.
C.The influence of China's growing power on American education.
D.The effect of Confucius Institutes on promoting Chinese in the US.

Gabriella's family immigrated to the US from Peru when she was two years old. As a compound bilingual(熟谙两种语言的人), Gabriella develops two linguistic codes at the same time, with a set of concepts, learning both English and Spanish. Her teenage brother, on the other hand, might be a coordinate bilingual, working with two sets of concepts, learning English in school, Spanish at home. Finally, Gabriella's parents are likely to be subordinate bilinguals who learned a second language by translating it into their mother tongue.
Regardless of accent and pronunciation, all types of bilingual people can become fully proficient in a language. It seems that the difference may not be apparent. But recently brain imaging technology has given a glimpse into how specific aspects of language learning affect the bilingual brain. It's well known that the brain's left hemisphere(半球) is in charge of logical processes, while the right hemisphere is more active in emotional and social ones. Language involves both types of functions. Critical period hypothesis says children learn languages more easily because their developing brains let them use both hemispheres in language learning, while in most adults, language relies on one hemisphere, usually the left.
Before the 1960s, bilingualism was considered a handicap that slowed the children's development by forcing them to spend too much energy distinguishing between languages. But a recent study did show that bilingualism may make you smarter. It does make your brain more complex, healthier, and more actively engaged, and even if you didn't have the good fortune of learning a second language like a child, it's never too late to do yourself a favor and make the linguistic leap from "Hello" to "Hola" "Bonjour" or "nihao" because when it comes to our brains, a little exercise can go a long way.
1.Why is Gabriella's family used as the example in Paragraph 1
A.To show that the family are bilinguals. B.To explain the advantages of bilinguals.
C.To illustrate the three types of bilinguals. D.To prove all ages can learn foreign languages.
2.Why do the children learn languages more easily than adults
A.Because they learn languages with a set of concepts.
B.Because they use both hemispheres to learn languages.
C.Because their mother tongue doesn't influence them much.
D.Because they can easily translate one language into another.
3.Which of the following best explains ”handicap" underlined in Paragraph 3
A.Disease. B.Disability. C.Disadvantage. D.Iliness.
4.What can we infer from the text
A.The left brain is more important for language learning.
B.Learning languages can promote the brain development.
C.The proficiency of language becomes weak gradually with age.
D.Immigrants have advantages in learning languages over natives.
D
Regardless of how far we'd like to believe gender (性别) equality in the workplace has come, there's still a big gap between male and female leaders in the professional world. Statistics show that women nowadays hold just 5.2 percent of CEO positions at S&P 500 companies, according to Catalyst.
While it's not a huge shock that there are only a small number of women in leadership positions, what is surprising though, is the fact that females may actually be better suited to lead in almost every area, at least according to new findings from the BI Norwegian Business School.
In their research, Professor Oyvind L. Martinsen and Professor Lars Glaso surveyed almost 3,000 managers with a special focus on personality types. The result was clear: Women scored higher than men in four of the five major leadership-centric categories.
While some people believe that men inherently make better leaders — probably because they picture a leader with a commanding voice, which is more typical of men than women — this piece of research suggests that women are better at methodical management and goal-setting, openness, sociability and supportiveness, as well as the ability to communicate clearly.
There was one area in which men scored higher than women, though, and that was on emotional stability and the ability to face job-related pressure and stress. The result suggests that women are more sensitive to the effects of high-pressure or highly emotional situations.
Obviously, it's important to consider individual differences. Anyone, regardless of gender, may be an inspiring leader and a competent boss. But next time you're hiring someone for a management position, you just might want to give the resumes (个人简历) from female candidates a harder look.
1.What makes us shocked much at leadership positions
A. Women are worse than men.
B. Men take almost all high positions.
C. There is a huge gap between genders.
D. Women might behave better in nearly every field.
2.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word "inherently" in Paragraph 4
A. Properly. B. Potentially. C. Naturally. D. Normally.
3.Who might have special interest in this text
A. Job hunters. B. Employers. C. Employees. D. Male researchers.
4.Which of the following may be the best title of this text
A. Why Women Make Better Bosses
B. How We Can Figure Out The Boss
C. How We Can Tell Gender Difference
D. Why Women Are More Sensitive Than Men

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A little girl had been shopping with her mom in WalMart. She must have been 6 years old with brown hair and an innocent face. It was pouring with rain outside. We all stood just inside the door of the supermarket, carrying our shopping bags.
We waited. Some were patient, while others were irritated because it ruined their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the rain washing away the dirt and dust of the world.
The little girl's voice was so sweet as it broke the trance (昏睡状态) we were caught in. "Mom, let's run through the rain," she said. "What " Mom asked. "Let's run through the rain!" she repeated.
"No, honey. We'll wait until it slows down a bit," Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and repeated, "Mom, let's run through the rain."
"We'll get wet if we do," Mom said.
"No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she pulled her mom's arm.
"This morning When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet "
"Don't you remember When you talked about Daddy's cancer, you said, 'If we all believe that we can get through this, then we can get through anything!'"
The entire crowd fell silent. I swear you couldn't hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.
"Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's run through the rain. If we get wet, then maybe we just need washing," Mom said.
Paragraph 1:
Then off they ran. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The little girl was right.

答案:
Paragraph 1:
Then off they ran. We all stood, watching and smiling as they rushed past the cars. They held their shopping bags over their heads in case they would get wet. There's no doubt that they got wet. I ran in the rain for I needed washing not only my body but also my mind.
Paragraph 2:
The little girl was right. As she and her mom said, if we brave the elements, we can overcome any problems. We should never be frightened by the temporary problems we are faced with. They have taught me a lesson that with faith and courage, we can get through anything in our lives!
