Aristotle once wrote that “happiness is a state of activity”. In other words, whether you are looking for life-long satisfaction or a few moments of good cheer, you’ve got to move forward. We’ve interviewed the experts and found five steps to take toward a sunny mood:
Over a 30-year period, University of Illinois researchers asked nearly 120,000 people how money, education, volunteer activities and close relationships influenced their happiness. Reported Newsweek’s Sharon Begley on the findings, “The greatest happiness is found with the strongest and most satisfying relationships.”
Singing aloud, talking to a stranger, raising your hand: all may increase a feeling of happiness, according to a study from Wake Forest University. Participants(参与者) followed the development of their moods for two weeks and reported feeling happier when they were more outgoing.
The editors of gave $5 or $20 to 46 strangers by chance. Half the group was told to spend the money on themselves, while the other half was told to spend it on others. Those who spent it on others felt much happier at the end of the day than those who’d spent it on themselves. There was no difference in happiness between those who spent $5 or $20, suggesting that it’s not how much money you spend, but how you spend it, that inspires the spirit.
Drinking water really can help keep you cheerful. A small 2012 study from the University of Connecticut suggested that even slight dehydration(脱水) influenced the female participants’ happiness.

Last January, my wife received a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift. We knew the right steps to complete it. We dealt with the frame first and then the large objects with special lines and colors. My wife mainly used the color and shape of the pieces to help with the puzzle, but I paid much attention to the picture on the box as a guide. And so began our long journey of the puzzle.
What is a jigsaw First, it is a puzzle to be solved. But unlike many puzzles, it can be solved with some talent and a stubborn determination (决心). In our case, 3 to 4 hours a day for 15 days.
In fact, a jigsaw puzzle is a testament to one’s character. You use lots of time to complete this useless task for no better reason than not giving up. I recorded the journey on Facebook and received much encouragement along the way from many unknown people.
So what to do with the completed puzzle It is too big and I have nowhere to put it. I can do nothing but to break it up and put it back in the box. It took 15 days to put the puzzle together and only two minutes to break it up.
When our pieces were back in the box, it was clear that the goal was never to complete the puzzle at all. Rather it was just a method to fill time. In this way, jigsaw puzzles are like life itself: It’s all about the journey and the destination (终点) is not very important.

If you are feeling that life cannot be any worse for you, it can be challenging to think positive (积极). When stressed, depressed, upset or otherwise in a negative state of mind because you are aware that misfortune (不幸) keeps happening. It is important to change those negative thoughts to something positive. If not, you will only attract more misfortune.
It is often very hard to think positive when so many things are negative, but be sure that someone, somewhere is worse off than you.
You can choose to think differently by beginning with the smallest of steps. If you start one small, positive thing and appreciate (感激) it during the course of your day, you will begin to move into a more positive situation and people will start showing up in your life. With appreciation, you will find that over time, you will change your outlook and choose to be happy, regardless of the events around you.
Here are a few common examples for you to practice. Begin and end each day with a “Thank you for this wonderful day!” When you see the rise of gas prices, say “I am so glad to have a car in which to get around.” When your boss is too hard on you, say “I am grateful for my job as I know that many don’t have one.” If you are having health problems, be grateful for what does work: “I really do appreciate it that my eyes see, my ears hear, my mouth tastes, my legs walk. my arms lift and my mind thinks and everything else works.”
Write down whatever you’re grateful for each day. In moments when you’re feeling really down, read aloud what you wrote. This will certainly help uplift your spirits. If you practice this regularly, you will find your list getting longer and longer.
The key is to move yourself into a positive thought and keep it there long enough to make it a moment of appreciation. The more you appreciate, the happier you’ll be.
Happiness begins from appreciation

Over the past billions of years, many animals and plants have lived on this beautiful planet. But about 99.9 percent of them died out. This is because they couldn’t adapt to (适应) where they lived. To survive, living things must change over time. This is called evolution (进化).
When reading this article, please remember that every one of us is a lucky dog. We evolve, and we survive! After years of evolution, now we have the abilities to live in the world and enjoy it. Just like humans, other animals on Earth also evolve great abilities. For example, giraffes live on the grassland of Africa. To adapt to life there, they have evolved longer necks to reach the high trees, as well as longer legs to run away from lions and cheetahs (猎豹).
However, evolution also gives giraffes a strange habit: They only sleep for about 30 minutes a day and less than 5 minutes a time, and they sleep standing! Why are they so wakeful Well, that’s because they are so tall. They need longer time getting off the ground and run. Because of this special sleep style, they won’t become easy meals for others.
As you see, evolution isn’t always perfect. It helps animals to live, but it sometimes also gives them what they don’t really want. Don’t feel sorry. It’s part of natural selection (选择). In order to survive, all of this is necessary.
Facts About Evolution
Why evolution happens Humans and other animals on earth need to evolve great abilities to adapt to the ____16____.
Take giraffes for ____17____ They have evolved longer necks to ____18____ the high trees, as well as longer legs to run away from dangerous animals.

What do we really mean by being open Being open is a kind of invitation to others to come in, to speak and to share. It is important in letting others get to know how we think and feel. In this way we will be understood and accepted by others. If we aren’t open with others, we won’t fully believe in ourselves or others.
Here are a few ways for you to be more open. First, make your outside behavior the same with your inside feelings and thoughts. Second, share how you really feel about something instead of just opinions. Third, try to change your questions into statements and talk in the first person so that people will understand you more easily. Finally, try not to say, “I don’t know.” This usually means I don’t want to think about it any more.
Remember also that it is not suitable to be open with everyone in every situation. You may want to be more open with close friends, but not with people you don’t know well. Besides, some people may not be used to too much openness. If we say everything we feel or think to them, they will feel very uncomfortable at times.
In all, being open is a good way for us to get on well with other people, but we’d better keep the balance between being open and not being too open.
Why to be open ●____21____ others to come in, to speak and to share. ● Others will understand and accept us if they get to know our thoughts and feelings. ● Help us to fully believe in ourselves or others.
____22____ to be open ● Make outside behavior the same as your inside feelings and thoughts. ● Try to share your ____23____ feelings. ● Make statements instead of ____24____ and use the first person. ● Avoid saying “I don’t know.”
Suggestions ● Don’t be too open with people you don’t know well. ● Too much openness may make some people feel uncomfortable ____25____

Many people do not know what to do in face of a decision, big or small. Most decisions aren’t life-changers. But often, the decision isn’t between this or that; it’s between acting or not. If this challenges you, here are some tips.
Jog or ride a bike to nowhere. Just start moving in hopes of leaving the familiar. Walk down every street or path you can find until you lose your way. Then, see where you end up. Remember what it felt like to wonder where you were going. Try to lose yourself more often. It’ll make you better at making a decision.
Sit outside without any technology for an hour. Let yourself get bored. Can you hear the birds singing The wind blowing Yourself breathing Try to do this once a week, then every other day, then every day. One of the reasons we find it hard to make a better decision is that we keep getting attracted to new things. A break from the noise will lead you to the decision you need to make.
Do something that scares you. People who have trouble making a decision fear mistakes. Tell someone you love them. Laugh out loud in a public place. Give a speech to a stranger. And when you do this, remember how you feel. When you’re sacred by a risky situation the next time, tell yourself that you didn’t lie. And try to trust the process in the future.
Some of these things may seem silly, but the more you do them, the more you’ll control yourself. It doesn’t matter where you’re going. Just go. Once you start moving, you can always change direction.

How young can social businesspeople be Five high school students from Illinois, US, think anyone of any age can start a business that does good to the world.
Their business, called Born To Be Tees, sells onesies(连体衣) for $10 (66 yuan) each and gives the money it makes to charities.
The onesies they sell are more than just clothing for small children. They also have a little social attitude(态度). For example, the writing on one of them says, “Change my diaper(尿布), not my climate” to get people to pay attention to environmental protection.
“We grew up as family friends and share an interest in charity, started the business to raise money for charity,” said team member Caroline Berkman.
“A lot of people think, ‘There are so many problems, but we don’t have to solve them. The next generation(代) will have to do it’,” said Berkman.
The students said they were bored with hearing it. Putting messages on onesies helps others realize “the next generation is being born today,” said team member Casey Borovsky.
It also shows that even the smallest people have a voice. “Everyone should have a voice and a say in what’s happening in the world,” Borovsky said.
These days, trying to solve social problems has become popular among young businesspeople, said Scott Issen, president and CEO of Chicago’s Future Founders Foundation, which encourages young people who don’t have much money to look at different careers.
“More and more of the young businesspeople play a social part in improving the world,” Issen said.
No matter what business they want to start, young people should give it a try, said Jennifer Kushell, CEO of Los Angeles-based Your Success. Now, an organization that gives tools to young businesspeople around the world.
“If you’re interested, go start something,” Kushell said. How young the social businesspeople are!

Most of us get our earliest life lessons from fairy tales, like “True love can overcome (战胜) anything” and “Even a frog can turn into a prince”. However, when we grow up, we start to learn new things about life, especially that love doesn’t always win, and that a frog is just a frog. Even so, our love for fairy tales never dies. Just look at cartoons like The Lion King and Frozen which have millions of fans young and old.
“Fairy tales are always there because they are the stories of our lives in the purest form.” wrote US writer Laura Packer. “They are stories of love and loss, happiness and sadness, riches and dreams.”
Fairy tales are all about the real world. But if children only see just one side of life, adults usually see the other. For example, in the 2014 film Maleficent, we’re told the tale of Sleeping Beauty from the views of the evil queen. Unlike the children’s version (版本) of the story, we see that the queen wasn’t an evil at birth. Instead, she experiences great lossers, leading to her “evil” side. And in US writer James Garner’s bedtime story books, he tells the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood, but with a modern touch: When the wolf tells Red Riding Hood that it isn’t safe for a little girl to walk through the woods alone, she calls the wolf sexist (性别歧视者), which connects with today’s women’s rights movement.
It looks like fairy tales aren’t just stories our parents read us at bedtime. They may usually start with “Once upon a time…”, but as we grow older, we learn that every story doesn’t always need a “Happily ever after” to be a good one.
