Who has Seen the wind by Christina Georgina Rossetti Who has seen the wind Neither I nor you; But when the leaves hang trembling The wind is passing through. Who has seen the wind Neither you nor I; But when the trees bow down their heads The wind passing by.
Night by William Blake The sun descending in the west. The evening star does shine; The birds are silent in their nest. And I must seek for mine. The moon, like a flower, In heaven’s high bower With silent delight Sits and smiles on the night.
Natural scenes often become the themes of poetry. Poets watch nature closely and present(呈现) its beauty in their poems. For example, poets may describe natural scenes such as a spring day or a snowy day. Besides, poets often express their feelings about nature by creating lively images(形象) in poems. With images, poets can describe the details(细节) of something colorfully. Readers, on the other hand, can connect their own experiences with the images in the poems so that they can share the poets’ ideas. Now let’s read the poem Who Has Seen the Wind
When we read the lines “When the leaves hang trembling” and “When the trees bow down their heads”, they remind us of a windy day. The poet successfully creates an image of the wind by describing details of the scene. These help the readers think of the moment when the wind passes by. We might even bow our own heads, imagining that we are the trees.
In the poem Night, Blake describes many details of a night scene. People know very well what they can see at night, like stars or the moon. However, Blake sees more than just the moon itself; he sees the moon as a flower, smiling at us from up in the sky. So the moon is really compared to a flower and personified(拟人化) as a smiling person.

A. B. C. D.
11.What do the two poems have in common?
①Seeing natural scenes as humans.
②Using imagination.
③Praising the same natural scene.
④Describing details of the scenes.
⑤Creating images by hearing and touching.
A.①③⑤ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.①②⑤
12.How does the writer present the passage to us?
A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.
C.By using personifications. D.By asking questions.
Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center drew a map of brain changes after a year of aerobic (有氧的) exercise and discovered an important process: Exercise increases blood flow into two key areas of the brain connected with memory.
The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, showed this blood flow can help even older people with memory problems. The finding could guide future Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默) disease research, according to UT Southwestern Medical Center.
In the study researchers followed 30 people who were 60 or older and had memory problems. Half experienced a year of aerobic exercise while the other half did stretches. “We’ve shown that even when your memory starts to drop, you can still do something about it by adding aerobic exercise to your lifestyle,” said Binu Thomas, a senior research scientist of UT Southwestern Medical Center who led the study. “The aerobic exercise group showed a 47% improvement in some memory scores after a year; the other group showed slight change. Brain imaging (成像) of the aerobic exercise group, taken while at rest at the beginning and end of the study, showed increased blood flew into the specific brain areas that played important roles in memory function.”
Many teams across the world are trying to decide if aerobic exercise might fight memory loss. Evidence (证据) is growing that it could at least play a small role in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. For example, a 2018 study showed that people with lower fitness levels experienced faster retrogression of important nerve fibers (神经纤维) in the brain called white matter connected with memory.
“Blood flow in the brain connected with memory improvement is still a part of the puzzle, and we need to continue piecing it together,” Thomas says. “But we’ve seen enough date to know that starting a fitness program can have lifelong advantages for our brains as well as our hearts.”

Many of us listen to music while we work, thinking that it will help us to concentrate (集中) the task at hand. And in fact, recent research has found that music can have beneficial effects (有益效果) on creativity. When it comes to other areas of performance, however, the influence of background music is more complicated (复杂的).
The idea that listening to music when working is beneficial is probably based on the so-called “Mozart effect”. Put simply, this is the finding that spatial rotation (空间旋转) perfornance is increased immediately after listening to the music of Mozart, compared to no sound at all.
How sound affects performance has been the topic of research for over 40 years, and is observed through a fact called the irrelevant sound effect (无关声音效应). To study irrelevant sound effect, volunteers in the research are asked to complete a simple task which requires them to recall a series of numbers or letters in the exact order in which they saw them. The tricky thing is being able to do this while ignoring (忽视) any background noise.
Two key characteristics of the irrelevant sound effect are required for its observation. First, the task must require the person to use their rehearsal (复述) abilities; and second, the sound must include acoustical (声学的) change. Where the sound does not change much, the performance of the task is much closer to that observed in quiet conditions.
The irrelevant sound effect itself comes from trying to deal with two sources of ordered information at the same time — one from the task and one from the sound. Unfortunately, only the former is required to successfully perform the recall task, and the effort in making sure that irrelevant order information from the sound is not dealt with actually prevents this ability.
A similar conflict is also seen when reading while in the presence of lyrical music. In this situation, the two sources of words — from the task and the sound — are in conflict. The cost is poorer performance of the task in the presence of music with lyrics.
What this all means is that whether having music playing in the background helps or prevents performance depends on the task and on the type of music, and only understanding this relationship will help people maximize their productivity levels.

Are you good with money Do you get pocket money from your parents or do you work to make money Read on to find out about British teenagers and their money!
Pocket money
Most teenagers in Britain receive pocket money from their parents. They might have to do some housework to get pocket money, including cleaning, cooking, washing dishes and so on.
Part-time work
A part-time job is a choice for teenagers who don’t have pocket money or who want to get extra money. About 15% teenagers have a job. Only children over the age of 13 can work. Popular part-time jobs for teens include babysitting, delivering(递送)newspapers, restaurant work and shop work. Children in Britain can work two hours a day at the most on a school day but not during school hours. During weekends and school holidays, they can work longer hours.
Bank accounts(账户)
Some children and teenagers have a bank account. There is no age limit at which you can open a bank account, but a bank manager can decide whether to open an account for a child or a young person. Parents can put pocket money directly into their child’s bank account. Most banks have a prepaid bank card designed for young people.
Mobile apps
Many companies have made mobile APPs for children, including GoHenry, Osper and Gimi. Parents can add money to their children’s accounts and check to see how the money is spent. Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a card. The APPs suggest that kids from 8 to 13 can use the cards.
So, many teenagers are getting experience working part-time, dealing with banks and deciding whether to save or spend their money. These are all steps towards becoming a financially independent(经济独立的)person and making and looking after your own money.

B.help to take care of babies during school hours
C.deliver newspapers for three hours on school days
D.work in restaurants every day as long as they wish

In 2018, Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time remembering facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can get knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads
Civilizations (文明) develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural Age, a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized, the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget. Nowadays, smart machines help us to get most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter
Researchers have realized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases (偏见), and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective (客观的), but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process. In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.
Another problem relates to the ease (容易) of getting information. When there were no computers, efforts were required to get knowledge from other people, or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief—the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all along.
In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence (智慧), we can easily get to smart memory networks where information is stored. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our health depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. And it is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.
We forget old ways to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the older forms of knowledge are stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they’re not really forgotten. Still, as time goes on, we slowly but unquestionably become strangers to future people.
37.Smart machines are likely to increase our biases because ________.
A.they go off course in testing and scoring B.we control the training process on them
C.we offer them too much information D.they overuse the provided answers
38.The ease of getting information from the Internet ________.
A.frees us from making efforts to learn new skills B.prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speed
C.misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledge D.separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines
39.According to this passage, the following are true except ________.
A.Most young scientists replied to Science that students should have more creative activities. B.Nowadays, with smart machines, people no longer need to remember most things.
C.The use of smart machines causes some problems to people. D.It is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.
40.The writer’s main purpose in writing this passage is to ________.
A.question about the standards of information storage B.discuss our problems of communication with machines
C.stress the importance of improving our remembering ability D.remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember
A team of US psychologist (心理学家) have found that talking to another person for ten minutes a day helps with memory.
“Socializing is just as useful as more traditional kinds of mental(脑力的) exercises in boosting memory and intellectual performance,” Oscar Ybarra, a psychologist at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, said in a statement.
In one investigation (调查), they analyzed data on 3610 people, aged 24 to 96.
They find that the higher their level of social interaction (交流), the better their cognitive(认知的) functioning. Social interaction includes getting together or having phone chats with relatives, friends and neighbors. In another experiment, the researchers conducted laboratory tests on 76 college students, aged 18 to 21, to evaluate (评估) how social interactions and mental exercises influenced the results of memory and intellectual performance tests.
The students were divided into three groups: the social interaction group had a discussion of a social issue for 10 minutes before taking the tests; the mental activities group completed three tasks (including a reading comprehension exercise and a crossword puzzle) before the tests; and a control group watched a 10-minute film of the Seinfeld television show.
“We found that short-term social interaction lasting for just 10 minutes improved the students’ intellectual performance as much as working on so-called ‘mental’ activities for the same amount of time,” Ybarra said.
The study was expected to be published in the February issue of the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

Why not write in a foreign language If people feel free to choose their profession, their religion, and even their sex, why not just decide which language you want to write Ever since Jhumpa published In Other Words in Italian, people have been asking me, “Why don’t you write in Italian, Tim After all, you’ve been in the country 35 years. What keeps you tied to English ” Is it just a question of economic(经济的) convenience
Certainly economics can be important. It was the factor that pushed Conrad to abandon his Polish mother tongue. If it is not possible to publish at home, or to publish there as one would wish to publish, then one is likely to go elsewhere. And if to publish elsewhere one has to change language, then some authors are willing to take that step.
Something of the same logic has driven many writers from Africa, Asia to write in French and English in recent years. There is also the fact that people in Europe and the West are interested in the countries they grew up in. Just as in the nineteenth century, novelists like Thomas Hardy could “sell” their familiarity with peasant life to a middle-class metropolitan(大都市的) public, so these writers have interested us with stories that might seem common in their home countries.
There is also a real internationalism in the decision to change language. If you have “a message” and if English is the language that offers maximum spread, then it would seem appropriate to use it.
All these make sense. Critics(评论家) tend to pay attention only to those who have made a success of writing in a new language. In April 2014, a New York Times article essentially listed young literary stars who had switched(改变)to writing in the main Western languages. At this point, the native English speaker almost begins to feel at a disadvantage for having been born into the dominant culture. Should we perhaps head for Paris, like Beckett or Jonathan Littell, just to be between two worlds Or look for something more exotic(异国的) and have ourselves translated back into English afterward However, one fact is that changing languages doesn’t always work.
I did write a novel in Italian. But after rereading it, I decided against it. My work lost power with the switch of language. My real subject matter still had to do with England and it was to my home culture that my books were addressed. The second language never seems to mean quite as much as the first. In any event, after my early experiment, I never went back to write in Italian. Changing language is not the only way to bring energy to your writing.
44.The author writes the first paragraph to ________.
A.introduce the topic of this passage B.provide background information
C.stress the importance of English D.explain why he writes in English
45.Why are some writers willing to write in a foreign language
A.They have published a lot of works at home.
B.Their works are uncommon in their own countries.
C.A new language may offer a wider readership.
D.They want to be accepted by middle class.
46.What can we infer from the passage
A.Native English writers are at a disadvantage for writing in English.
B.Writers can’t be entirely separated from their own culture and language.
C.Writers should write in a foreign language to draw critics’ attention.
D.Any writer can succeed with the switch of a new language.
47.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage
A.Write in a foreign language B.Publish at home
C.Economy decides everything D.Write books in Italian

The holiday season is often called the “giving season”. People give gifts and have celebrations. However, this can lead to a lot of waste. Experts recently gave some ways to reduce the amount of waste.
Gift wrap
You can use reusable bags for gifts. You can also wrap gifts in old maps and pages from magazines. You could also wrap a gift in a colorful scarf or tablecloth. This makes the wrapping cloth part of the gift itself.
Holiday cards
For many people, sending holiday cards is a tradition. However, now many people use electronic cards. People are more accepting of electronic holiday cards and get just as much joy out of it.
Decorations
For decorating the home, natural plants can be used to make a room beautiful and smell nice! And one expert suggests using old holiday cards as decorations. Experts also suggest using newer energy-saving lights.
The tree
If people want a Christmas tree, the question is often fake or real.
“The greener choice would be buying a real Christmas tree from a local farm.” says Ozawa, “New ones are replanted every year.” In the US, many cities and towns deal with the holiday trees into a usable product, like small wood pieces for the garden. If you do buy a fake tree, plan to use it for many years.
Tableware
When having a celebration, avoid single-use plastics. Use more environmentally-friendly options, like regular plates and cups.

Have you ever watched a show about the wild A shark (鲨鱼) eats a seal! Lions run down a gazelle! Is all nature like that All about eating and blood Or is that just what keeps our eyes glued to the TV screen Let’s look at sonic living things who work with each other instead of ripping each other apart.
When a lion kills a gazelle, it wants to eat as much as it can and maybe share the rest with its family. There are some living things that will take small pieces of another living thing’s body. Parasitism is when one living thing gets its energy from another living thing, does not give anything back, and hurts the thing it’s taking things from.
Now let’s get a little nicer. Sometimes a living thing will live off the body of another living thing without hurting it. They do not steal anything. They do not mensalism is when two living things live together and one gets good things out of it while the other is not hurt by it. Have you seen a picture of a whale (鲸) with rocky white things stuck to its skin Those are barnacles(藤壶). They attach themselves to the whale, so nothing will try to eat them and they can eat things that float by.
Now let’s get really nice. While sharks are biting and lions are fighting, are there any animals that just get along Yes! Actually, there are many. Mutualism is when two living things work together and both get good things out of it. Bees and flowers are the most common example. Without flowers, bees could not make honey. Without bees, flowers could not make new seeds. It’s win-win for these two. There are lots of animals that get along. Birds will live on the backs of zebras and eat the ticks that are drinking the zebra’s blood. The bird gets food. The zebra gets its ticks taken away. In some of these cases, one animal could not live without the other.
We use the word “Symbiotic (共生的)” for all of these kinds of relationships. Sometimes it’s good for one and bad for the other. Sometimes it’s just good for one. Sometimes it’s even good for both. So, it is nice to know that there are some living things out there that are finding ways to live together. We could pay attention to the animals that do not always make it on TV.

How do you look after your cat Introduction The first step to becoming a good cat owner is to choose the right kind of cat. It is how a cat behaves that is the most important, not what she looks like or how old she is. She is going tobe your best friend. You will spend a lot of time playing together. But remember, you need to look after her every day. Not just to start with, but for all her life. Understanding your pet By watching your cat closely, you will learn her special way of talking. From the movement of her tail or ears, you will see if she is happy or sad. And you will soon understand what she is saying when she miaows. Caring for your pet You will only be your cat’s best friend if you care for her properly. Each of us has dreams and goals for our future. What makes us study and make progress each day is closely connected with our personal dream and goal.
But why do you have dreams and goals, you still end up with nothing What separates successful people from the dreamers is their persistent (锲而不舍的) action. When you learn your lessons in school, you must work hard and not give up. You will often find some of your lessons very hard. Try and keep trying, and you’ll be sure to successfully deal with any difficulty you meet with. If we have a hard lesson today, let us try our best to learn it well and then we shall be prepared for a harder one tomorrow.
This is the famous formula (公式) for success:
Dream > Believe > Achieve
Most people have what they want (Dream) and think they can realize their dreams (Believe). And then they do nothing. They just imagine their dreams can come true. When they get tired waiting and lose a lot, they get bored. They say angrily how terrible their life is.
I personally believe that if you really want to achieve your dreams and goals in life, you have to add one thing to your success formula:
Dream > Believe > Act > Achieve
For me, act is the most important thing for success and that’s to Take Persistent Action (Act). If you say, “I can’t do it” and give up, you can never do anything valuable. However, “I’ll try” creates wonders. Let’s remember that there will be obstacles in our life. We must face them bravely and solve them. Success is not something that falls down from the sky. Most successful people made their dreams come true because of their persistent action.
Please remember: Action is the bridge that connects our dreams and goals to reality.

A.Doing Something Valuable B.Studying Hard and Making Progress
C.Realizing Dreams with Persistent Action D.Separating Successful People from Dreams
Chinese rose plants lining the roads always are a welcome sight for Ye Jiaxing, 32, when she returns from a business trip and takes a taxi home from Beijing Capital International Airport. Like many Beijing natives, Ye feels deeply connected to the city, wherever she is, and the roses in full bloom (开花) always make her feel less tired and remind her that she has arrived home.
Praise from poets
Growing of the roses in China can be traced back about 2,000 years. Before they were grown, the wild roses only bloomed once a year. As more and more people were attracted by the roses, they started growing. The roses can flower for more than 200 days a year. Well-known poets during the Tang Dynasty produced many works to praise the lengthy flowering period of the Chinese rose.
During the Yuan Dynasty, specialized flower businesses began appearing in some towns to supply Chinese roses to the palaces. Empress Josephine, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, loved roses and collected varieties from all over the world. Many people in Europe love the flowers, especially as they bloom for most of the year.
Research efforts
Last year alone, more than 50 million Chinese rose plants from over 2,500 varieties were growing in Beijing’s streets, gardens and parks. The Chinese rose usually blooms three to four times every year after the Spring Festival, each lasting about 10 days, providing a perfect chance for people to fully appreciate (欣赏) them until October. In China, Beijing is the best place to plant Chinese roses. The city’s mainly dry weather and low rainfall make pest control easier. Some diseases, such as black rot, which is usually seen in southern China, are also prevented by these weather conditions. After hundreds of experiments, we knew that climbing roses were the best choice to plant along ring roads in Beijing.
35
In the past 20 years, some people have known the economic value of the flowers and started to take up growing new types. Growing a new type of the Chinese rose is not easy. People need to cross-pollinate (授粉) at least 10,000 plants to get a new one while the Chinese rose is normally self-pollinating. Even when all the conditions are right, some luck is needed to grow new types. A new type named Beijing Pink won the Chinese rose contest at the International Horticultural Exhibition in Beijing last month. It took more than 10 years. For the public, it is hard to tell the difference between the Chinese rose and the other roses, even though 85 cities in China have chosen the former as their symbol flower. Many Chinese rose types, grown by people in their homes, have not been confirmed by the government, and there is still a long way to go.
77.What impressed Ye Jiaxing most when she came back to Beijing
A.Wide roads. B.Poems about roses. C.Chinese roses. D.Good transportation.
78.Which of the following is suitable for ________
A.A New type grown B.Challenges remain C.Cross-pollination needed D.Contests continue
79.According to the passage, we know that ________.
A.Chinese roses can be fully appreciated all year round
B.Chinese roses can bloom much longer than wild roses
C.people find it easy to tell Chinese roses from other types
D.people started to grow Chinese roses in Tang Dynasty
80.The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.tell the story of Ye Jiaxing B.list many kinds of roses
C.explain some difficulties D.introduce Chinese roses
The Amazon rainforest is moving toward a “tipping point” past which trees will start to die off in large numbers, researchers have said.
The study, published in the Joumal of Natural Climate Change, was conducted by scholars from the University of Exeter, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Technical University of Munich. They used satellite data from 1991 to 2016 to examine trends in deforestation.
They calculated that 75 percent of the rainforest is now at risk of being unable to recover when experiencing droughts, which are also increasingly more common because of global warming.
“Deforestation and climate change are likely to be the main drivers of this decline,” Niklas Boers of PIK and the Technical University of Munich told the BBC.The study has predicted that it is only a matter of decades until a “significant chunk” of the Amazon is changed from rainforest into savannah (大草原).
What would the world be like without the Amazon rainforest
The destruction of the Amazon rainforest, in some ways caused by global warming, will also speed up this process. “The Amazon stores lots of carbon and all of that would be released into the atmosphere, which would then further contribute to increasing temperatures and have future effects on global mean temperatures,” Professor Boulton of the University of Exeter told the BBC.
This worrying snowball effect means that the destruction of the Amazon will make the much larger battle against global warming more difficult.
The destruction of the Amazon would also have a huge influence on the ecology of the Earth. The Amazon rainforest is home to more than 30,000 species of plants, 2.5 million species of insects, 2,500 fish, over 1,500 bird species, 550 reptiles, and 500 mammals, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society. A savannah, a grassland environment that lacks a large variety of plant life, would be unable to host the large and varied ecosystems that currently exist in the rainforest. It is likely that many animals would become endangered or even die out, as they would be unable to adjust to this new ecosystem.

B.Deforestation and climate change are surely the main factors of the decline of the rainforest.
C.The process of destruction of the rainforest will slow down because action has been taken.
D.It is highly possible that the ecology of the Earth will become out of control.
84.The writer wrote this passage ________.
A.to describe a lot of endangered species B.to predict the special life in the future
C.to explain the way to protect the environment D.to make us pay attention to the rainforest
