本课时包括 Starting out和 Understanding ideas两部分。
Starting out是导入部分,通过观察图片和观看视频,让学生了解三位人物的事迹:以蹬三轮车为生的白方礼老人,累计捐款35万元。他用自己的行动为人们树立了个助人的榜样!Florence Nightingale因在克里米亚进行护理而闻名,被誉为“提灯女神”。她是世界上第一位真正的女护士,开创了护理事业。“5.12”国际护士节设立在南丁格尔生日这一天,就是为了纪念这位近代护理事业的创始人。美国传奇灭火专家 Red Adair一生扑灭了3000多场油井大火。Adair不仅是一名无畏的灭火专家,也是大胆变革消防技术的开拓者。他在全世界首次采用潜水设施成功扑灭海上油井大火,还将炸药、水炮、推土机、探钻泥浆和混凝土等广泛应用于救火实践。在此基础上,引导学生进一步思考这三位伟大人物对社会的贡献、他们可敬的品格,思考和归纳做出相似贡献的其他人,完成相应的练习题。
Understanding ideas部分的 The Well that Changed the world主要介绍了Ryan幼年时听老师说起非洲儿童吃水难的问题,于是默默攒钱,并筹集捐款,给非洲儿童打井的故事。通过这篇文章,学生进一步了解非洲儿童的生活现状并思考自己能为他们做些什么,培养学生乐于助人的高尚品格。
课时目标:
1.认知并灵活运用本课时的重点单词 contribution, relief, shortage, effective,
fund,earn,donate,reality以及短语 break into a smile,have trouble(in)doing sth.,look across,make a difference,set up,benefit from。
2.通过速读、精读等方式,引导学生由浅入深,逐层推进,理解文章的内容,

1.在网上搜索和了解 Starting out部分中三位人物的是大感人事迹,以及非洲儿童的生活现状。
2.预习 Starting out和 Understanding ideas两部分的内容,通过查字典等方式提前解决词汇问题。
教学过程:
Step I Starting out
1.The teacher guides the students to look at the pictures on Page 13 of the textbook and asks them to speak out the three people.
2.The teacher plays the video prepared in advance and asks the questions
(1)What kinds of good deeds are shown in the video?
(2)What idea does the video convey
3.Work in groups.
Ask students to talk about the three people in the pictures. Record what they discussed in the form.

Step II Reading
1.Pre-reading.
(1)Look at the pictures on Page 14 and learn about the story of The Well that Changed the World.
(2)Ask students to look at the title of the passage and talk about their understanding of it.
2.Fast reading.
Read the passage quickly and answer the questions below.
(1)When did Ryan first get the idea that many people in African countries had difficulty getting clean water?
(2)What did Ryan determine to do to help those people?
(3)How did he feel when he learned about the cost of a well?
