Officials in San Francisco are asking the public to help choose a waste container among several models proposed for mass deployment(部署) in the California city. It is proving to be a costly project. One of the trash cans under consideration cost more than $20,000 and took four years to make.
San Francisco began its search for the perfect public trash can in 2018. Officials decided it was time to replace the more than 3,000 cans that have served the city's streets for almost 20 years. The current trash cans open too widely, officials say, permitting people to reach in. The cans also break a lot, requiring repairs. Sometimes people push them over or mark them with words and pictures. Sometimes, the cans are set on fire.
Last month, the city deployed 15 made-to-order trash cans and 11 off-the-shelf trash cans. Attached to each was a QR code(二维码) from which people could answer questions about the individual can. The city government project also created interactive maps so people can find the different models to consider.
The so-called Soft Squaremodel trash can was priced at $20,900, making it the costliest model on the streets. It is made of light steel. A press of a pedal opens the can for hands-free operation. It has dividers so waste can be separated from materials for recycling, like aluminum and glass. Another model, called Slim Silhouette, came in at $18,800. It employs a steel design that makes it hard to mark with paint. The lowest-priced of the specially-made models cost about $11,000. The other trash cans deployed for now cost between $630 and $2,800. City officials say, however, that the government will not pay more than three-thousand per can once a model is chosen for mass production.
Beth Rubenstein is a spokeswoman for San Francisco's Department of Public Works. "We live in a beautiful city, and we want (the trash can) to be functional and cost-effective, but it needs to be beautiful," she said. But the good looks of the shiny new trash cans have not protected them from vandalism(故意破坏) and other disrespect. Three weeks after being deployed, several are overflowing, or covered in orange and white graffiti (涂鸦)or dirty from coffee spills.
Diane Torkelson volunteers on a team that removes trash from the streets near her home. She recently visited three of the proposed trash cans. Two were already full when the group arrived to inspect them, she said. "If the trash can is full, it's of no use, no matter how well it was designed," she said.

A 17-year-old pilot has become the youngest person to fly alone around the world. Mack Rutherford, who holds British and Belgian citizenship, completed his trip Wednesday. He landed his small plane in Bulgaria's capital, Sofia. That is also where he started his trip five months ago. Rutherford, who turned 17 during his trip, broke the Guinness World Record for youngest male to fly around the world. That record had been held by Travis Ludlow of Britain. Ludlowwas 18 when he made his flight around the world last year.
Rutherford also became the youngest person to fly around the world in an ultralight(超轻型的) plane. His sister, Zara, finished her own around-the-world flight in January at age 19. Until Wednesday, she held the ultralight record. Zara also set the record as the youngest woman to fly alone around the world. His trip, which began March 23, took Rutherford through 52 countries across five continents. To set a mark recognized by the Guinness World Records, he crossed the equator(赤道) twice.
Rutherford was born into a family of flyers. He earned his pilot's license in 2020, becoming the youngest pilot in the world at the age of 15. His trip around the world started in Sofia on a plane owned by the internet company ICD Soft. The ultralight plane, called Shark, can travel at the speed of 300 kilometers per hour. Normally a two-seater, the plane was changed for his long trip by replacing the second seat with an extra fuel container.
Rutherford first planned to make the trip in three months. But it lasted longer because of several barriers, including rainstorms, sandstorms and extreme heat. Most of the delays were caused by waits to get permits and other documents required for keeping with the flight plan. The flight took him through Africa and the Gulf area to India, China, South Korea, and Japan. He crossed the northern Pacific and landed after 10 straight hours in the air on a volcanic island near the Bering Strait. From there, he headed to Alaska and down the West Coast of the United States to Mexico. Then he headed north again along the U.S. East Coast to Canada, and across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe.
On Wednesday, a huge crowd of people welcomed Rutherford and celebrated his achievements. His father, Sam Rutherford, said he was extremely happy and proud of his children's achievements. He told reporters that such an event helps show other children they should follow their dreams.
His sister, Zara, said she kept in close touch with her younger brother during his flight. "While he was flying, I constantly tried to keep in touch and help him," she said. "Our parents called him every day, and I joined in those conversations. I gave him advice on the route, on the flight, so that I could be useful to him."
