Pre-reading: Answer the Questions.
Read the short introduction to Jules Verne and answer the questions.
1. Have you read any stories written by Jules Verne What are they about
2. What amazing things do you think you might find in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
Now compare your answers with the rest of the class and share what you know about this book.
When reading an unfamiliar word, first try to use the context of the sentence or passage to infer its meaning. Then think about what other words would make sense in the sentence. Parts of the word, such as prefixes, word roots and suffixes, can also be used to try and work out its meaning.

Language Points : Important sentences
1. Beyond that the colours darkened into fine shades of deep blue, and gradually disappeared. Truly this water which surrounded me was but another air heavier than the Earth’s atmosphere, but almost as clear.
Paraphrase(释义): In the places farther than the distance of a hundred and fifty yards, the colours were darker and became deep blue, and then slowly disappeared. I surely felt that the water around me was just like air. It was thicker than the Earth’s atmosphere but it had got the same clearness.

2. We were walking on fine, even sand, not wrinkled, as on a flat shore, which keeps the impression of the waves.

本句中 account for 意思是“解释/说明”,“pass through”意思是“穿过,通过”,“非限制性定语从句 which accounted for the vibration 描述了intensity(强度),该从句中还包含了另一个限制性定语从句 which passed through…,修饰vibration(振动) 。译文:这块令人目眩的地毯简直是一个反射器,强有力地把阳光反射回去,光线所经之处的每个水分子都因此而振动。
