The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Is a Sunny Funny Play
Rachel Brosnahan won the 2018 Golden Globe Awards for her leading role in the comedy The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
However, somewhat ironically, Rachel Brosnahan said that she had lost many acting jobs her entire life for being told she’s not funny.
Rachel said that she did at first accept the comments but has now found her own comedic path.
“I’m laughing at the fact that I’m now an award-winning comedic actress,” she shared.
“Like, that feels ridiculous! I spent most of my life being told I wasn’t funny. I’ve lost many jobs because people would say, ‘We really like her, but she’s just not funny.’”
However, Rachel admitted she didn’t take the rejections to heart, but rather, thanked her critics① for making her learn more about herself and her abilities.
“I didn’t quite realise how much I had accepted that idea, the idea that I wasn’t funny. And, what I’ve realized through working on this show and through trying to create this character is that I just hadn’t found my comedy yet,” she said.
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is an American period comedy-drama television series, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, Daniel Palladino--a team best known for Gilmore Girl and Bunheads. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel series sees Rachel star as Miriam Midge Maisel--a Jewish housewife in 1958 who discovers she has a talent for stand-up comedy. In the monologues② written by Sherman-Palladino, Midge does what great comedies are able to do: She transforms personal pain and confusion into a truly funny performance. And the series’ success lies in showing us how she turns her life into so great an original material.
Appearing on Amazon’s streaming service, the series has received countless awards.
