Unit 3 Using Language 名师教学设计
课时内容
本课时涉及的是语言知识运用,包括-ing as subject和 Sports role models两部分。
-ing as subject讲解动词-ing形式作主语的用法,要求学生掌握用法特点,分析出句中的主语部分,并注意动词-ing形式作主语时谓语动词要用单数。
Sports role models包括两部分。第一部分 Senior Citizens’ Sports Club主要讲述了在老年运动俱乐部里,老年人可以进行哪些体育活动;第二部分主要介绍了体育楷模的鼓舞作用。
课时目标
1.掌握本课时的重点单词 cheat、remarkable以及短语 compare with、refer to、throw away、fight for等的用法,并能在真实语境中灵活运用。
2.掌握动词-ing形式作主语的用法。
3.引导学生了解体育精神,听懂与体育精神相关的话题内容,能够恰当地运用相关表达阐述自己的意见并进行解释。
4.通过老年人运动俱乐部以及体育楷模,激励学生们自觉、踊跃地参加体育活动,强身健体,并锻炼自已的毅力,培养良好的性格品质。

2.上网查找有关老年运动俱乐部、体育楷模的英语简介。
3.预习课本P29~31的内容,找出该部分的新词汇,并根据上下文猜测其含义。
教学过程:
Step Ⅰ Grammar— -ing as subject
1. Do Activity 1 on Page 29 of the textbook.
Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the question.
①What are the subjects in sentences (a) and(b)
Compare them with the following sentences and answer the questions.
②What does“it”refer to in sentences(c)and(d)
③Why does the author choose to use sentences (a) and (b) in the reading passage
Suggested answers: ①“Knowing where the ball would go”is the subject in sentence (a); “Shooting with great accuracy”is the subject in sentence (b). ②In sentence(c)“it”refers to“knew where the ball would go”; In sentence(d)“it”refers to“shot with great accuracy”. ③Considering the genre of the reading passage—a news report, it requires more concise and formal language. So the author chooses to use sentences (a) and(b) in the reading passage, which are suitable for a news report.
2. Do Activity 2 on Page 29 of the textbook.
Rewrite the underlined sentences with the -ing form as subject.
Etenesh Diro had almost completed two thirds of the 3000m steeplechase, when disaster struck. She got tangled up with some other competitors. It made her fall. Her right shoe started to come off. She tried to pull the shoe back on, but it cost her precious time. One after the other, the runners overtook her. She threw the shoe away. This meant she could get up quickly and fight for her position in the race. She ran the rest of the race with just one shoe on and her right foot bare. It raised a big cheer for her. Luckily, she was later given a chance to compete in the final. She lost a shoe. But it didn’t keep her from taking part. This is the true spirit of sport.
Suggested answers: Getting tangled up with some other competitors made her fall. But trying to pull the shoe back on cost her precious time. Throwing the shoe away meant she could get up quickly and fight for her position in the race. Running the rest of the race with just one shoe on and her right foot bare raised a big cheer for her. Losing a shoe didn’t keep her from taking part.
3. Give enough examples of the usages of -ing as subject. Guide students to sum up the usages of -ing as subject. Then ask students to give examples.
4. Do Activities 3 and 4 on Page 29.
(1) Complete the passage with the correct form of the words in the box.

Step Ⅱ Sports role models
1. Do Activity 5 on Page 30.
(1) Look at the pictures and discuss what the old persons can do at the Senior Citizens’ Sports Club.
(2) Complete the voicemail messages with the correct form of do, play and go on Page 30.
