1. Which sentences interest you most
On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.
But this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater.
No one would choose to live without friends, even if he had all other goods.
Remember the saying: On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.
Remember that on the Internet, nobody knows who you really are.
This caption is about the uncertainty and possible risks of making friends online. It accompanies (伴随) a cartoon featuring two dogs, one of which is sitting at a computer and turns knowingly to the other with these words. Despite the witty humour, the cartoon wasn’t a hit when it was first published on 5 July 1993, few people being familiar with the Internet at that time. Its popularity grew over the years, however, and today it is one of the most iconic and recognisable works about the Internet.
2. Why does the author say “But this doesn’t mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater” Do you know of any similar sayings in Chinese
Because there are both advantages and disadvantages to online friendships, and the author wants to remind us to treat them rationally and wisely.
Similar saying in Chinese: 因噎废食. It literally means to stop eating for fear of choking. It’s
used as a metaphor (比喻) of the action of
stopping doing something for fear of its disadvantages.
3. Do you prefer to make friends online Why
It’s good to make friends online. The Internet helps us make more friends, and chatting online gives us more freedom to express ourselves. What’s more, I think that if we make foreign friends online it’ll help us with our English learning.
Making friends online is a waste of time, which may affect our studies. Besides, some students may get cheated online. We should pay more attention to our studies, health and safety. As for friendship, we can find it in our classmates and other people around us.
