Teaching design
Teaching material analysis:
Activity 1 of the section “Starting out” mainly introduces the different ways of celebrating the coming-of-age ceremony in different periods and different cultural backgrounds, so as to arouse the students to think about the real meaning of coming-of-age ceremony.
Activity 2 of the section “Starting out” asks students to appreciate the excerpt of the poem by listening and reading, asks students to talk about what qualities we need to “be a Man”and which qualities are the most important to them as they grow up.
Teaching objectives & Core Competencies and Values for students:
1. Let students have a basic understanding of coming-of-age ceremony by watching the video, help students have a preliminary understanding of growing up.
2. Let students understand the main idea of the poem. let students sum up what qualities we need to “be a Man”, in order to further lead in the theme.
3. Help students to think deeply which qualities are the most important to them as they grow up.
Teaching key points:
1. Lead the students to understand the poetry. Lead the students to learn the basic knowledge of English poetry and understand its main idea.
2. Let students sum up what qualities we need to “be a Man”.
3. Let students understand which qualities are the most important to them as they grow up.
Teaching difficult points:
Lead the students to feel the emotion conveyed and expressed by the poem and think about what the most important qualities are in the process of growing up, and think about the significance of growing up.
Teaching procedure of the section “Starting out”
Activity 1
Teacher’s activity
Teacher plays the video and asks students to watch it carefully.
Teacher asks students to think about the first question. Teacher plays the video again if needed.
Students’ activity
Students watch the video carefully.
Students answer the first question. Students watch the video again if needed.

To arouse students’ interest in the topic.
To let students have a basic understanding of coming-of-age ceremony.
