“…corporate knowledge combined with creativity has brought my humble bookstore into the 21st century!”
(7) Pay attention to some language points.
1) The day I heard that the Rainbow Bookstore was closing after 50 years of business, I was heartbroken. (Para 1 Line 1)
与the day相类似的可以引导时间状语从句的连词还有the moment, next time, each time, the first time等。
e.g.
The moment I saw her, I recognised her.
Next time I go skiing, I’ll wear warmer clothes.
Each time I washed the car, it rained.
The first time I flew on a plane, I was really nervous.
2) The bookstore, which was a legendary fixture in the neighbourhood, was a place where anyone could drop in and connect through their love of books. (Para 1 Line 3)
drop in: to visit somebody or somewhere informally, usually without having arranged to do so in advance顺便拜访,与后面文章出现的短语drop by意义相同。
e.g.
Why not drop in for a chat
I just dropped by to see how you were getting on.
相关短语还有:drop in on somebody临时拜访某人 drop in at somewhere临时拜访某地
drop off打瞌睡,打盹 e.g. I dropped off and missed the end of the film.
drop out辍学,退学 e.g. She started a master degree but dropped out after
only a year.
3) Sighing deeply, he told me how it was becoming difficult to run an independent bookstore. (Para 2 Line 4)
e.g.
The earthquake happened at midnight, causing hundreds of deaths.
Seeing from the top of the hill, we can find that the city looks more beautiful.
run: vt. be in charge of or manage经营;管理
vi.
相关短语:run out (of)用完,用光 run across偶然遇到 run after追逐
4) Childhood memories came back to me so clearly, as if the events had happened only yesterday. (Para 3 Line 1)
e.g. He acts as if he knew me.
e.g. He talks about Antarctica as if he had been there before.
5) We spent hours reading, seated on the store’s old but comfortable furniture. (Para 3 Line 8)
seat作动词时,译为“使就座”,一般接人或反身代词作宾语,即seat oneself on/at…, 如seat后无宾语时,常用于be seated结构。
e.g.
I seated myself on the grass.
He is seated between Jack and Tom.
6) It made me realise that the bookstore and all that Old Casey had given to the community could soon disappear for good. (Para 4 Line 4)
for good: forever, without the possibility of change in the future永远
e.g. The sports centre closed down for good.
7) Nearby, customers were poring over shelves selling stationery, posters and other best-seller-themed gifts. (Para 5 Line 7)
pore over: to read or look at something very carefully for a long time仔细阅读;凝视,注视
e.g. She was poring over a book.
8) I joined Casey, who was looking up at the screen on which readers’ comments kept popping up. (Para 8 Line 1)
join: to go somewhere in order to be with someone or do something with them加入,和……一道
e.g. She joined him for a drink.
Words and expressions
legendary, through, tablet, exterior, stationery, a physical bookstore,
a book reading, the spring break, organic food, corporate knowledge, in good hands, a bunch of…, pop up, the day…, drop in, drop by,
as if…, for good , pore over, take over
Step 4: Language practice
Try to introduce the old Rainbow Bookstore or the new one with the help of the diagram.
The Rainbow Bookstore owned by Casey was a legendary fixture with a history of 50 years. It was a place where anyone could drop in and connect through their love of books. Due to most young people’s habit of reading e-books on tablets as well as the competition from chain stores and online discounts, the store was closing. When the author was a child, he would look at the new books, or just chat with Old Casey, spend hours reading, seated on the store’s old but comfortable furniture and share ideas and comments on the books by writing them on a large board.
The Rainbow Bookstore was saved due to the campaign led by Jennifer who had taken over the bookstore. Turned into a place for literature-loving members of the community to get together, the store changed a lot. Though its old brick exterior remained unchanged, it was like a different world inside. There were shelves selling stationery, posters and other best-seller-themed gifts, a big screen displaying customers’ comments on the month’s best-seller, a café selling organic food and more community events such as book readings, poetry recitals and even jazz concerts and movie nights.
Step 5: Practical application
Think about two questions.
1) What do you think of the changes made to the bookstore and why
2) Do you think physical bookstores will survive facing the challenge of online bookstores and why
资料
1) I think they are quite important, because the changes bring the Rainbow Bookstore back to life by providing a new reading experience for customers. For example, people can have a cup of coffee while reading and engage in more community events like book readings hosted by the bookstore. All these changes make the bookstore more appealing and competitive.
2) Yes, because compared with the online bookstores, the physical bookstore has its own advantages. For example, generally, physical bookstores allow consumers to immediately obtain their books while customers who buy books online have to wait for a longer time. With more creative ideas put forward, physical bookstores will have a promising future.
