General facts about the book:
The Old Man and the Sea is the representative work of
American novelist Ernest Hemingway. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize
in 1953 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.
Plot of the book:
It tells about the Cuban fisherman Santiago in eighty-four days with no fish caught. He finally caught a big marlin by himself. Unluckily, the fish, too large, dragged his boat on the sea for three days before being exhausted. He killed the fish and tied to the side of the boat, but attacked by sharks in return, the old finally man came back with only the head and tail of the fish and a spine left.
Comments:
"Man is not made for defeat. A man may be destroyed, but he cannot
be defeated." This is Hemingway's dictum, is the eternal motto.Santiago
in The Old Man and the Sea is the best interpreter of this golden saying.
Conclusion and recommendation:
In this simple story, there is an unyielding soul -- a poor Cuban fisherman -- Santiago, an unfortunate old man who interprets the image of "tough man" with his tragic experience.Poor and unlucky, his fate is sad, but he is also a failed hero, "undefeated loser".He is the symbol of the perfect person admired by Hemingway: strong, kind, generous, full of love. Even if he fails in the battle field of life, he is still mentally strong and a "tough man" in the face of irreversible fate.
