My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.
Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set.
When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.
4. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set
He got an older model than he had expected.
He couldn’t return it when it was broken.
He could have bought it at a lower price.
He failed to find any movie shows on it.

Confucius was born in today's Qufu in Shandong Province in 551 BC. His family was far from being wealthy. But he was a hard-working pupil even in his childhood. As a young man of a little over twenty, he became a small official of the state.
Since he was very knowledgeable and serious in work, he had become quite well-known by the time he turned thirty.Confucius had been to many of the states of the time, trying to make his political views accepted by the rulers in running their states. But they turned a deaf ear to his views and opinions. As a result, Confucius made up his mind to devote all his energies to education. When people learned about this, many of them sent their children to him to be educated. They were accepted and so Confucius became the first man in the history of Chinese education to start a private school.
Yan Hui, a young man of humble origin, wanted to be accepted as Confucius’s student. But the family was so poor that they even had difficulty providing themselves with daily necessities. He was afraid he would be rejected as he could not afford the tuition(学费). One day he came to where Confucius was giving lectures and overheard Confucius say,"I'm ready to accept anyone that can bring 10 pieces of preserved meat for tuition, whatever his origin." Hearing this, Yan Hui hurried back home and told his friends Zi Lu and Zi Gong about it. A few days later, all three became Confucius's students.
Confucius was a dedicated educator, having accepted a total of 3, 000 students in his life, of whom 72 were

The problem of robocalls has got so bad that many people now refuse to pick up calls from numbers they don't know. By next year, half of the calls we receive will be scams(欺诈). We are finally waking up to the severity of the problem by supporting and developing a group of tools, apps and approaches intended to prevent scammers from getting through. Unfortunately, it's too little and too late. By the time these"solutions"become widely available, scammers will have moved onto cleverer means. In the near future, it's not just going to be the number you see on your screen that will be in doubt. Soon you will also question whether the voice you're hearing is actually real.
That's because there are a number of powerful voice manipulations(处理),and automation technologies that are about to become widely available for anyone to use. At this year's Google's I/O conference, a company showed a new voice technology able to produce such a convincing human-sounding voice that it was able to speak to a receptionist and book a reservation without detection.
These developments are likely to make our current problems with robocalls much worse. The reason that robocalls are a headache has less to do with amount than precision. A decade of data breaches(数据泄露)of personal information has led to a situation where scammers can easily learn your mother's name, and far more. Armed with this knowledge, they're able to carry out individually targeted campaigns to cheat people. This means that a scammer could call you from what looks to be a familiar number and talk to you using a voice that sounds exactly like your bank teller's, tricking you into"confirming"your address, mother's name, and card number.Scammers follow the money, so companies will be the worst hit. A lot of business is still done over the phone, and much of it is based on trust and existing relationships. Voice manipulation technologies may weaken that gradually.
We need to deal with the insecure nature of our telecom networks. Phone carriers and consumers need to work together to find ways of determining and communicating what is real. That might mean either developing a uniform way to mark videos and images, showing when and who they were made by, or abandoning phone calls altogether and moving toward data-based communications-using like FaceTime Audio or WhatsApp,which can be tied to your identity.
Credibility is hard to earn but easy to lose, and the problem is only going to get harder from here on out .
12. How does the author feel about the solutions to the problem of robocalls
A . Frightened . B. Confused.
C.Embarrassed. D.Disappointed.
13. Taking advantage of the new technologies, what can scammers do
A. Aim at victims precisely.
B.Damage databases easily.
C.Start campaigns rapidly.
D. Spread information widely.
14.What does the passage imply
A.Honesty is the best policy.
B.Technologies can be double-edged.
C. There are more solutions than problems.
D. Credibility holds the key to development.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A.Where the Problem of Robocalls Is Rooted
B.Who Is to Blame for the Problem of Robocalls
C.Why Robocalls Are About to Get More Dangerous
D.How Robocalls Are Affecting the World of Technology

I woke up earlier than my brother as every other day of the week. I jumped out of the bed, got dressed, brushed my teeth, and had breakfast. Saying good bye to my pregnant mother, I got in the car no later than 7:05. I got to school on time, even though my brother came out of the house late as he used to.
It was a Thursday. I was walking to the chemistry rooms when my phone in my left pocket vibrated(震动). I took it out and looked at the shiny screen. As soon as I saw my father’s name on that screen I realized something was not right.
He would not call me in the middle of a school day just to talk. He would want me to focus in school and do well. I answered the phone, and my father sounded worried. He told me to find my brother as soon as possible, walk with him to the school picking-up zone and get in the car with my brother. Our driver would take us back home where my father was.
When I was in the car with my brother my dad called the driver and told him to take us to the hospital. We were going to meet him and my mum there. As soon as my brother and I found about the change in plans, we looked at each other in the eyes. I immediately noticed the fear in my brother’s eyes.
To be honest, I was really scared too, probably more than he was. But I did not say anything. We arrived at the hospital. I saw my dad on the phone waiting for us at the entrance. He was smoking. Seeing my dad smoking made me more worried. I had never seen him smoke before. He hated it. As soon as he recognized the white car, he threw the cigarette away. I looked at my brother; he was looking out of the other window. I did not tell him what I just saw. I did not want him to worry.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给其内容和所给的段落开头语续写成两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
