Robots on the farm
What can drones do Their many uses include taking pictures from the sky, observing(观察) wild animals and delivering packages. Now these small flying robots are leading a new farming revolution(革命), according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
When equipped(装备) with cameras and other data-gathering devices, drones provide us with an eye in the sky. Here are a few of the farming-related jobs drones can do.
Looking for sick crops
Drones can scan(扫描) crops using different kinds of light. Then, they produce multispectral images(多谱图像) that can help us find sickly yellow plants within fields of green. Drones can also detect bacteria(检测细菌) that are harmful to crops in the air from a few kilometers away. Farmers can check the drones’ air samples(样本) and try to find ways to protect their crops before the bacteria get to them.
Counting cattle
When flying over cattle, drones can track the livestock and find out where fences need fixing. People can also equip drones with thermal imagers(热像仪) and night-vision cameras. This can help farmers look for animals that could harm their cattle.
Water watch
Most fields aren’t perfectly flat(平坦的). After watering, some places may dry out faster than others. Other spots might not get water at all. Drones can scan the field and make a 3-D map. Using the map, farmers can figure out which parts of a field are dry or need improvement.
Spraying pesticide(喷洒农药)
Different parts of a field might be uneven(不平坦) or have different altitudes(高度). Drones can check for this when flying above the land. Then, they change their height and therefore spray the correct amount of pesticide over each part of the field. This is more efficient than traditional pesticide spraying. Drones can finish spraying a field up to five times faster than with traditional machinery, according to a study from MIT.

Elle Luna is a designer, painter, and writer. She used to work as a fantastic designer on apps. However, she gave up her job in her 30s and started the 100-Day Project. It was Michael Bierut who first used the 100-Day Project at the Yale School of Art: each student chose something to do every day for 100 days. For example, one student made a poster in under a minute every day for 100 days; another danced every day and made a video. In 2014, Luna and her group started the 100-Day Project online. Everyone can take part in it. It’s simple — choose a creative project, do it every day for 100 days, and share your process (过程) online. For the 100-Day Project, it’s not just about what you have finished — it’s more about the process. A hundred days! Even Luna herself was questioning before she decided to jump in, “Can I finish it Will I push through when I’m busy Will I share even when I can’t do it well Will I show up every day ” Luna did it anyway. In the first year, Luna herself finished 100 days of self-portraits (自画像). If you can dream it, you can do it. People of different ages joined in. Hillary Patrick, a want-to-be artist and mum of two, finished a project of embroidery (刺绣) while she had to look after two kids. Are you hungry to start a creative project Do you want to be a part of a group that celebrates “process” Start thinking about your project, and invite friends to join, too. As there is a famous saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Fan Shenghua, 61, is one of the inheritors(传承人) of the Longjing tea roasting technique. His palms tell you everything—they’re thick, rough, and full of calluses(老茧); a reminder of more than 40 years of hard work. “You have to touch the leaves with your hands to see how much water should be removed,” Fan said. “If too much is removed, the leaves will break into pieces; if not enough is removed, the tea will taste bitter.”
This traditional technique dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasty. It not only ensures the quality of the tea, but also is an important part of Chinese tea culture. “Longjing tea leaves are famous for their color, taste and shape. Only by hand can we make the best of them. It’s like making a work of art.” Fan said.
These days, however, more people are using machines to do the job. “It’s easier, but the quality is not as good,” Fan said. “Machine-made tea floats longer in water and tastes bitter.”
In March in 2020, when President Xi Jinping visited Hangzhou, he watched Fan roast tea leaves. Fan changed the strength and movement of his hands as he felt the tea leaves roast. Xi later said, “The things made by two palms cannot be replaced by modern technology.”
Fan is now taking apprentices(学徒). His son, a college graduate, is one of them. “It’s a tradition. We need to pass it down,” said the father.

Beauty in Common Things
Each different part of China has its own special forms of traditional art. These usually try to show the things that are important in life, such as love, beauty and family. The most common things, from paper to clay to bamboo, are turned into objects of beauty.
According to Chinese history, sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming. He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble. Today, sky lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper. When the lanterns are lit, they slowly rise into the air like small hot-air balloons for all to see. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Paper cutting has been around for over 1,500 years. Paper cutting sounds very, easy but it can be difficult to do. The paper, usually red, is folded before it is cut with scissors. The most common pictures are flowers, animals, and things about Chinese history. During the Spring Festival, they are put on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.
Chinese clay (黏土) art is famous because the clay pieces are so small but they look very real. The pieces are usually cute children or lively characters from a Chinese fairy tale or historical story. The pieces are carefully shaped by hand from a very special kind of clay and then allowed to air-dry. After drying, they are fired at a very high heat. They are then polished and painted. It takes several weeks to complete everything. These small pieces of clay art show the love that all Chinese people have for life and beauty.

Compass, Paper-making skill, Gunpowder and Typography, are the Four Great Inventions in ancient China. They had great influence on the development of Chinese and the world civilization (文明).
Compass The idea of inventing the compass first came from the ancient Chinese labor people. They found the magnet (磁铁) could point to direction when they worked. The compass played an important role in the navigation (航海) after it was introduced to Europe.
Paper-making skill The invention of Paper-making skill is China’s contribution to the civilization of the world. It was first invented by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty(105AD). He made the vegetable fiber paper with the coveting of a tree, broken fishing network, cloth, and so on. From then on, paper has become the main material that is generally used to write.
Gunpowder It was first invented by accident while masters were trying to make medicine that made people live for long. In the end of Tang Dynasty, the gunpowder began to be used in the military (军队).
Typography Before printing was invented, people had to depend on handwriting to reproduce a book. It was very slow and had many mistakes. Wood-block printing first appeared in the early Tang Dynasty. Later in about the 4th century, the method of rubbing a piece of paper on an engraved(被雕刻的) stone covered with ink was used to make copies. Block printing was not very convenient. As a child, Alain Robert was afraid of heights. One day, when he was 12, he returned home from school. At the front door of his building, he looked for his keys. He didn’t find them. It was 3: 30 p.m. and his parents worked until 6: 00 p.m. Alain looked at his apartment on the eighth floor. He saw an open window. He closed his eyes and imagined himself climbing the building. When he opened his eyes, he told himself, “I can do it.” Fifteen minutes later, he was in his house and his fear of heights was gone.
Today, Alain still climbs buildings. In 2003, he climbed a building in London dressed as Spider man to advertise the film. In 2004, he climbed Taipei 101. To reach the top of a building, Alain uses his hands and special shoes. Alain takes climbing as a hobby.
He also does it to raise money for charity—for children and the homeless people. When he climbs, he wants to send a message to people: If you have a dream—something you really want to do, it can become true. But you must be brave and keep traveling. If something bad happens, don’t give up. Close your eyes and tell yourself, “I can do it.”

Dear Judy,
Sister, how are you
I woke up this morning. It’s nearly Easter. Whenever it is Easter, I think of you. I’ll never forget seeing you for the first time when you were born. You were the sweetest little baby wrapped in a soft white blanket. How I loved kissing and holding you! I was a teenager and loved carrying you around. Sometimes people asked if you were my baby. I must have looked like a very young mother, but how proud I was in those moments.
However, things started to change for me as I never felt quite wanted. How sad when it was that I was green with envy.
Before your arrival, Mum was in no hurry to buy the things that I needed. But later I always had to wait and wait for her to pay my school fees or buy books and clothes. Everything was always late!
Your situation was different and Mum always made sure that you had the best of everything quickly. When you got a horse for your 6th birthday and started riding lessons, how jealous I was!
I slowly turned cold towards you and never gave you the warm hugs that you expected from me or showed an interest in your horse or your medals. I remember your sad face, probably wondering why I didn’t seem to care about you.
Today I considered that as I woke up. I have never spoken about this, or why that is so. Today I must say that I am very sorry for hurting your feelings. It was never your fault. You were too young to even realize it. All these years, you might have wondered what you did wrong that I didn't often speak with you.
Please forgive me! I want to be a real big sister to you again. If you can forgive me, we can start over and spend time together. You have turned into a beautiful young woman who I am so proud of. I would love to be close again.
Much love
Helen
