Christmas is coming, and it is time to warm yourself and head out to see some festive lights. There are plenty of choices when it comes to following a light path as part of your Christmas celebrations.
Oxford Street
Oxford Street’s festive lights are a treat for the eyes this year. However you’ll have to pick your hours carefully as the lights—which we returned on at the start of November—are only on for eight hours a day this year, from 3-11 pm, in the wake of the rising energy costs the country is facing. It is expected this will reduce energy usage by up to two thirds compared to previous years, when the lights have been on for 24 hours through November and December.
Kew Garden
One of the most famous light paths of the season, Christmas at Kew offers a full-on festive experience with over 2 km of lights to walk through. Along the way you’ll have the chance to sample festive food and drink, and possibly even say hello to Santa himself.
Regent Street
Regent Street’s lights are on the theme of The Spirit Of Christmas this year, bringing golden angels to the shopping street. The lights, which cover Regent Street and the St James neighbourhoods, were turned on on November 9, and like the Oxford St lights are turned on between 3 and 11 pm.
Covent Garden
A visit to Covent Garden will certainly get you in the festive spirit this year, with the central London destination offering a whole lot of lights—from 11 am until midnight every day until January 3. Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine—with over 40 different varieties there.

“I left Carrara when I was 26, and I was the youngest stone-cutter on the Abu Simbel worksite,” says Luciano Paoli. Aged 78, he is one of the workers with first-hand experience of this international adventure: the rescue of the Ramesses II temples in Egypt from the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam.
A green hand from the marble (大理石) caves of Carrara who helped cut the temples of Abu Simbel into blocks, Paoli attended the event celebrating the 50th anniversary (周年纪念) of the adventure, hosted by Salini Impregilo and the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum) in Turin, Italy.
On February 4, 2019, the rescue of the world heritage site was celebrated at an event held at the museum with Chief Executive Pietro Salini, Museo Egizio Director Christian Greco and UNESCO Regional Director Ana Luiza Thompson-Flores attending.
“Taking down two temples piece by piece, putting them back together elsewhere and perfectly rebuilding the landforms (地貌) around them was a great idea and showed us a new frontier (领域) for cultural protection,” said Salini. “It also showed the world that progress did not have to come at the expense of a world heritage site. Today, 50 years after this fantastic project, we remember with great admiration all those people from different countries and cultures, who, with their unique skills, achieved this impressive achievement for future generations.”
The work of moving the temples, in which Impregilo took part, was done with the support of 50 countries and some 2, 000 people in little more than 1,100 days.
This unique project is also being celebrated with the publication of “Nubiana”, a multimedia tome (多媒体巨著) that tells the story of the temples built more than 3,000 years ago in honour of the great Pharaoh Ramesses II. It also describes the engineering challenges of their rescue by international teamwork.
4.Why did Paoli leave Carrara at age 26
A.To learn stone-cutting skills.
B.To work on an international team.
C.To attend a 50th anniversary event.
D.To fight against a rising flood in Egypt.
5.What can we learn from Salini’s words in Paragraph 4
A.He thought highly of the great project.
B.He had a long wait for the anniversary.
C.He called on us to protect cultural heritage.
D.He expected future generations to work together.
6.What do we know about “Nubiana”
A.It is the fruit of international effort.
B.It is part of the anniversary celebration.
C.It is in honour of the Pharaoh Ramesses II.
D.It shows the engineering of building temples.
7.What is the text mainly about
A.Impregilo’s huge success as an organiser.
B.Paoli’s great achievement as a stone-cutter.
C.Two processes in the rescue of Abu Simbel.
D.The celebration of the Abu Simbel rescue.

Every year on June 21st, World Music Day is commemorated in over 120 countries, including its birthplace of France, to honor both amateur and professional musicians. Citizens of a city or country are permitted and encouraged to perform music outside in their neighborhoods, public areas, and parks on Music Day. Free concerts are also held, where musicians perform for the joy of it rather than for a fee.
In the 1970s, American musician Joel Cohen, who was then working for a French radio station, came up with the idea of having musicians perform on the evening of June 21 to celebrate the start of summer. It was finally accepted by France’s Ministry of Culture in 1982. The day started in France and has since extended to countries such as Belgium, the United Kingdom and others. It’s the ideal time to learn a new instrument or listen to songs they wouldn’t ordinarily include on their playlist. Every type of musician can celebrate World Music Day with friends, family, and even strangers, whether they are young, elderly, new, or seasoned professionals. The purpose is to promote music.
It makes no difference how good you are at making music; everyone can do it. This day can be used by even the most tone-deaf folks to sing their hearts out and appreciate the beauty and power of music. Music is not only a great way to express yourself, but it may also be beneficial to your health. A song might bring back a joyful memory or make you feel energized when you listen to it.

If there are ghosts, goblins(小妖), witches, astronauts, cartoon characters, and a wild variety of oddly dressed creatures visiting your door asking for candy, chances are it’s Halloween.
Before you shell out the sweets, most of these visitors probably shout “trick or treat!” But why do they do that
In the United States and Canada, trick-or-treating has been a popular Halloween activity since the late 1950s. Children of all ages dress up in costumes and travel from house to house to receive treats in response to their call of “trick or treat!”
The phrase is a subtle suggestion that if a treat (like candy) is given, then the child will not perform a “trick” (mischief) on the owner of the house. This popular Halloween custom has its origins in the ancient practices of “souling” and “guising.”
In the Middle Ages, poor people in Ireland and Britain would go “souling” on Hallowmas (November 1). “Souling” consisted of going door to door asking for food in return for saying prayers for the dead on All Souls Day (November 2).
“Guising” — the custom of wearing costumes, masks, or other forms of disguise — began in Scotland in the late 19th century. Scottish children hoped to prevent evil spirits from doing harm by dressing like them. They carried lanterns made out of hollow turnips and at various homes asked for treats, such as cakes, fruit, and money.
Immigrants brought these local customs to North America in the early 20th century. The term “trick or treat” first appeared in print in 1927 in Canada. No one knows for sure how or why that particular term came to be.
The custom of trick-or-treating started in the western United States and Canada and slowly moved eastward. The custom stalled(停滞) during World War II because sugar was rationed(限额) during that time. From the 1950s onward, however, the custom picked up steam and has been the central focus of Halloween ever since. Today, Halloween trick-or-treating is big business.
12.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.Cartoon characters are a must during Halloween.
B.In the 19th century, children would ask for food with pumpkin lanterns.
C.The term “trick or treat” didn’t appear until the early 20th century.
D.Candy plays a critical role in contemporary Halloween business.
13.Which word has the closest meaning to the underlined word “disguise”
A.Cover. B.Outfit. C.Dress. D.Image.
14.What is the passage mainly about
A.The origin of Halloween.
B.How did trick-or-treating come about
C.How do we spend Halloween
D.Halloween trick-or-treating has become a big business.
15.What may the next paragraph of the passage talk about
A.How has Halloween trick-or-treating become a big business
B.What’s the current Halloween business like
C.Why do we need continue Halloween trick-or-treating business
D.How can we better manage Halloween trick-or-treating business

Weeks before Thanksgiving arrived, my anxiety about it increased. My husband and I recently made a cross country move with our young child Jill. Our neighbor was an old couple, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith, who were kind and friendly.
Our new home was in a mess. “We should start thinking about plans for Thanksgiving,” I suggested. “Don’t worry about it,” my husband said. “Heat up some hot dogs, maybe some cheese, and the kid will be happy.” That sounded great. I was in a relief!
In the past holidays, I had never been responsible for cooking a full Thanksgiving dinner. My job was always to bring drinks or a side dish to a large gathering (items that had the highest success rate) and help clean up after the meal.
But one day my son Jill happily showed newly created turkey crafts. “Let’s go on a walk and try to find a rock that looks like turkey!” Jill shouted to me. “Take me on a walk, Mommy!” The excitement was building, and I had a feeling that hot dogs were not going to be enough for my child on Thanksgiving.
“I’m going to try and prepare Thanksgiving food, Leonard,” I said to my husband late one night. He eyed me curiously. “You sure ” Then he said. “Okay, then, if you think you can do it.” I said. “I’ve got two days to prepare. The grocery store is open twenty four hours. I’m going to the store!”
Unfortunately, only a huge turkey remained, so I had no choice but to buy a thirty pound turkey. Early Thanksgiving morning, I dragged(拖拽) the bagged turkey home. When my family saw it, they got a big surprise at its size. Seeing the surprise on their faces, I realized there was no way we could finish the turkey. It’s too big for my family. “There was only one turkey left in the store.” I explained. “But how could we finish the turkey ” I asked my husband and Jill.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

46.Good evening, my dear teachers. I’m Li Hua.
Knowing you’re keen on traditional Chinese culture, I’d like to introduce a traditional Chinese festival to you — the Dragon Boat Festival.
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, so it’s also called the Double Fifth Festival. On that day, we usually eat Zongzi — sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. As the festival name shows, people hold dragon boat races to celebrate it, especially in the southern places in memory of Qu Yuan, a great poet of ancient China. Therefore, it’s regarded as a day of mourning and cherishing the memory.
Thanks for your listening.

47.One possible version:
Jill said we could invite our neighbor, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, to share with us. “I found the old couple were very lonely because no one had paid a visit to them since we moved here. Besides, I didn’t see them buy anything for Thanksgiving.” Knowing that, we reached the agreement on inviting the couple. Jill was responsible for the invitation and my husband and I were in charge of dinner. Realizing it would take hours to cook, we busied ourselves making an entire dinner.
Soon, Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to my house with a big smile on their faces. They greeted us and we made introduction to each other. Seeing my husband and I were clumsy(笨拙的) at preparing dinner, the couple offered to give us a hand. With the help of them, a fancy dinner was done in no time. Obviously Mrs. Smith had a great talent for cooking. As a special treat, I laid out a beautiful red table cloth, candles and our best china. We gathered around the table, eating delicious Thanksgiving dinner and making a promise to spend Christmas together.
