Step I学习理解
活动一:感知与注意
1. Ask students to look at the following sentences from the reading passage The D-Day landings and pay attention to the words in bold.
a Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened... b The enemy were hiding, ready to attack the Allied soldiers... c ...people were coming together for memorial ceremonies.
2. Ask students to discuss the questions below and share in groups. Then check the answers.
·In which sentence does the word “enemy” refer to different members Is it followed by a single verb or plural verb
·In which sentence does the word “enemy” refer to a single unit Is it followed by a singular verb or plural verb Do you know any other similar nouns
·Is the word “people” usually followed by a singular verb or plural verb Do you know any other similar nouns
Suggested answers: ·In sentence (b), the word “enemy” refers to different members. It is followed by a plural verb. ·In sentence (a), the word “enemy” refers to a single unit. It is followed by a singular verb. Other similar nouns are family, team, class, crowd, government, etc. ·The word “people” is usually followed by a plural verb. Other similar nouns are police, cattle, etc.
3. Encourage students to look for more sentences following this rule in the reading passage The D-Day landings and share in class.
4. Have students summarise the use of subject-verb agreement in their own words.

Read and correct.
(1) Ask students to read the sentences below.
①Government troop have put down the uprising.
②The police is after him.
③The military are well-organised and prepared to fight.
④All the machinery in this factory are made in the US.
⑤The solders’ uniform look very smart.
⑥The group was sent to rescue the missing pilot.
⑦Politics are the study of the ways in which countries are governed.
(2) Encourage students to correct any mistakes in these sentences or write down a “√” if they are correct.
(3) Encourage volunteer students to read the sentences one by one and check the answers in class.

活动四:描述与阐释
1. Learn some information about Saving Private Ryan.
Background information: 《拯救大兵瑞恩》是梦工厂1998年出品的战争片,由史蒂文·斯皮尔伯格执导,汤姆·汉克斯、汤姆·塞兹摩尔和马特·达蒙等联袂出演。影片于1998年7月24日在美国上映。该片描述了诺曼底登陆后,瑞恩家4名于前线参战的儿子中,除了隶属101空降师的小儿子二等兵詹姆斯·瑞恩仍下落不明外,其他3个儿子皆已于两周内陆续在各地战死。美国陆军参谋长马歇尔上将得知此事后出于人道考量,特令前线组织一支8人小队,在人海茫茫﹑枪林弹雨中找出生死未卜的詹姆斯·瑞恩,并将其平安送回后方。 2014年12月17日,影片入选2014 年美国“国宝影片”名单。
2. Ask students to read the film review and try to catch the main idea and details of each paragraph on their own.
Saving Private Ryan is a film directed by Steven Spielberg. The two main characters are Captain John Miller, played by Tom Hanks, and Private James Ryan, played by Matt Damon. James Ryan is the fourth son in his family to be sent to fight in the Second World War. The enemy ①________(kill) his three brothers. Their heart-broken mother receives the news about all her dead sons on the same day. The US Army ②________(decide) to find Ryan and bring him home. A group of men are sent into the French countryside to try to find the fourth brother. The rescue team ③________ (be) led by Captain Miller, a hero and survivor of the Omaha Beach battle. At the beginning of the film, the audience ④________(be) thrown into an incredible sequence of approximately 30 minutes, depicting the landings in Normandy. They see the full horror of war, and the chaos and senseless waste of life. Saving Private Ryan is an unforgettable war film and, also, a story of courage and sacrifice. 3. Have students complete the film review with the correct form of the verbs in brackets.
4. Encourage some students to read the whole review and check the answers as a class.
