Have you ever heard the saying “If you want a friend, be one”?
Here is how a new teacher made friends with the girls and boys in her class on the first day of school. As the bell rang, the teacher smiled at each girl and boy. Then she said in a quiet voice, “Good morning. How nice it is to have all of you in my class this year. I'd like to know each of you. I am sure we will enjoy working together.” Everyone felt that she meant what she said because of her sweet voice and her friendly look.
She told the girls and boys her name and wrote it on the blackboard. Then she told them some of the things she liked to do and she was hoping to do with them during the year.
Then she said to the class, “Now you know my name and the things I like and I want to know your names and the things you like. Then I will feel that I know you.”
Could you make friends by doing the same as this teacher did?
One way of getting to know girls and boys in your class is to find out more about them. It is often easy to be friends with those people who have the same hobbies with you. You play the same games and go on journeys together.

【浙江省2014高考英语模拟冲刺卷】D
My parents lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s and I heard stories from both of them about how their lives changed because of it. The same was true of my in-laws whose lives were also affected negatively. For example, my husband’s grandfather owned a factory. Owing to the stock (证券) market crash, he lost the factory and went back to work in the very factory he’d once owned. He could no longer afford to send my father-in-law to college. My father-in-law worked full time as a pipe fitter and went to school part-time to earn his degree, which took seven years.
Somehow, my husband and I never dreamed that we would live through anything similar. However, as they say, history often repeats itself. In 1929, the stock market crashed in the month of October. The same thing happened in 2008. My husband, who had invested (投资) all our money in the market, was in a state of shock. Each day the news was more terrible.
“We’ve lost more than half of our wealth,” he told me.
I just stared at him. “How can that be?”
“I thought we had good, solid investments, but it seems I was wrong.”
“Well, we do have pensions (抚恤金),” I said. “Hopefully, they won’t be affected. Since we have never lived a high lifestyle to begin with, I don’t think we have to worry.”
“I did hope to leave our children and grandchildren a generous inheritance (遗产),” my husband said. He shook his head in disbelief.
“We’ll still be able to give gifts. Love is the most important gift anyway.” Our children are grown and we always try to be generous to them and our grandchildren.
“It just won’t be the same.”
“The world is always changing,” I said. “You never know what will happen. The main thing is not to get discouraged. As long as we have our health and can afford the necessities of life, there’s no reason to be upset. When you have your health, you can always earn more money.”
I hugged my husband and he kissed me in return.
“I guess you’re right,” he agreed. “We love each other. We have our health and enough money to live on comfortably. That’s all that matters.”
We had to move out of our house into an apartment. Since few people could afford a house in those hard days, we decided to offer it for considerably less than it would normally be worth. Even so, several buyers changed their mind days before closing. But finally, our home was sold.
As we shook hands with the new owners, I told them how fortunate they were.
“Not only are you getting a bargain in the price, but this house has good luck. We bought the house from a family who lived in it for nine years. They were a happy family, a husband, wife and five children. It was a cheerful house and we had a good feeling about it. We raised our children here as well.”
“That’s good to hear,” the young woman said with a smile. “We have two young children ourselves. And I believe in luck too.”
We nodded our heads in agreement, understanding each other.
“You’ll live only six houses from the best primary school in the town and your children won’t even have to cross a street,” I said. “Our children used to come home each day and have lunch with me.”
“We like the woods in the back,” the young man told us. “We’re going to plant a large garden in the backyard.”
They seemed so young and happy and full of plans. My husband and I had to smile. At least some good was coming out of the economic difficulty. We no longer needed a house. It was good to know that another young family would now be living in what had been a happy, loving home for us. Also, the house needed work that we no longer had the energy to perform.
These may be tough times economically, but as for me, I intend to look forward, not back. As Shakespeare said in Macbeth, “what’s done is done and cannot be undone.” It’s the present and future that matter. We can learn from our mistakes and make our lives better.

Arthur Miller (1915-2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller’s father had moved to the USA from Austria Hungary.Drawn like so many other by the “Great American Dream” However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early l930s.
Milles's most famous play, Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system. When it was first staged in 1949, the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics` Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.

【湖北省2014高考英语第二次联考试题】D
A couple had to put their wedding on hold after a barn owl (仓枭) called Darcy which had been chosen to deliver the rings fell asleep in the roof of the church. The bride had secretly arranged it. But what happened was out of her expectation.
Rev Bryan, who was in charge of the ceremony between Sonia Cadman, 46, and Andrew Mettle, 49, said: “It would have been absolutely excellent --- if it worked. It was a lovely idea and it was supposed to be really stunning. When it dived over the heads of the guests, they’d all feel the air rushing from its wings and would get a big surprise.
“The groom is an amateur falconer (训鹰人) and so it was secretly arranged for two falconers to suddenly appear at the moment when the best man was about to hand over the rings. One of them stood at the front of the church next to us with a gauntlet (金属护手) on, as another appeared at the back of the church with a box. The owl came out and paused for a little bit. Then it saw the gauntlet and took off but instead of landing on the arm of the man and delivering the rings, it went up over our heads, landed in the roof space and fell asleep then.”
Rev Bryan added: “We all laughed about it, and then we tried to get it down, but it didn’t come. It probably thought ‘I’m a barn owl and this is like a barn, so I’ll take a rest’. It is said that never work with animals because they don’t always do as they’re told! So we had plan B --- a back-up pair of rings. After a few minutes, we gave up trying to get it down and carried on. It was nice to be able to have a bit of a laugh. It’s important that people realize that a church wedding doesn’t just come as a package of things you have to do. I’m all for including something of the personality and individuality of the couple getting married. It was such a magical wedding and full of emotion.”
“Luckily the service was able to go ahead and the groom was able to hold the bird (after it woke up) and have some really nice pictures taken after the ceremony.”
63. Why did Darcy appear on the wedding ceremony?
A. It was expected to deliver the rings to the couple.
B. It was the pet of the new couple.
C. The groom wanted to take picture with it.
D. The bride arranged to give it to the groom as a gift.
64. What does the underlined word “stunning” (paragraph 2) mean?
A. Harmonious. B. Funny. C. Amazing. D. Inspiring.
65. What did Rev Bryan think of Darcy’s accident?
A. It had been intended by the two falconers.
B. It made the wedding not as good as expected.
C. It added fun to the routine wedding ceremony.
D. It helped people to realize the value of church weddings.
66. Sonia and Andrew’s wedding ceremony could not go on without ______.
the owl B. falconers C. the guests D. the back-up rings
