Fitness experts weigh in on whether it’s safe to skip this sometimes annoying step in your exercise routine.
One of the most important steps in your fitness routine comes at the conclusion. Many know the importance of properly warming up and preparing to exercise, but experts say that incorporating a cool down routine is just as important. According to the Mayo Clinic, cooling down allows for your body to recover and return to its normal, ____111____ state.
Though cooling down isn’t proven to ____112____ muscle stiffness or soreness, it can prevent dizziness and allow your heart rate and breathing to ease back to a normal rate, Harvard Medical School reports. Phyllis Mammarelli, personal trainer at the Shenango Valley YMCA in Sharon, Pennsylvania, works with each of her clients on a cool down routine as she says it’s a (n) ____113____ part of exercising.
“Cooling down allows your body to gradually return to a low-intensity activity level, slowly reducing your respiratory and heart rate until it’s equalized and back to normal” she says.
____114____ the recovery phase of a workout isn’t proven to be harmful to your body, but Mammarelli warns that without cooling down, the body will take longer to return back to the low-intensity level activity level you began your workout with.
There are also non-threatening side effects that could occur as a result of forgoing a cool down. Mammarelli warns that blood can gather or pool in your lower extremities and lead to dizziness and ____115____. Additionally, ACE says to keep an eye on your ____116____ soreness and stiffness. While soreness after a workout is to be expected, ____117____ onset muscle soreness can occur 24 - 28 hours after your workout and cause “uncomfortable debilitating pain”. Side effects are mostly seen in the elderly or those with cardiovascular disease and can be ____118____ by warming up and cooling down. Here are some other signs that you might be working out too much.
Allow five to 10 minutes at the ____119____ of your workout for a cool-down routine. During this period, continue your workout session, but at a much reduced rate. If you’re _____120_____ for time during your workouts or unsure how to allow your body to recover, Mammarelli suggests stretching muscles in a pain-free range of _____121_____. Here’s an easy stretch _____122_____ to try.
Tacking on a few _____123_____ minutes to your workout for cooling down may seem like a(n) _____124_____, but the benefits outweigh the cost of finding extra time in your _____125_____. If you need inspiration for scheduling the time to workout and cool downlook to these women who work out every day.

I’ve never been an athlete. At school, my main goal was to ____206____ PE at all costs. In my twenties, I went for yoga class occasionally, but that was really the summary of my athletic accomplishments.

Brazil’s election offers hope for the rainforest
A presidential election in 2022 will offer a chance for Brazil’s government to reverse policies that have____231____to global climate change. The country is home to 60% of the Amazon rainforest, which has historically been an important carbon____232____. But a worrying study published in 2021 in Nature found that over the past decade it has____233____become a carbon source. The culprits: forest fires and deforestation, which has soared by more than 40% since President Jair Bolsonaro____234____in 2019.
On his watch, environmental enforcement and fines dropped to record lows. Activists say this has encouraged____235____logging, mining, and land-grabbing. In June the environment minister, Ricardo Salles, resigned after federal police began investigating him for alleged____236____in timber trafficking.
A greener president would try to crack down on such crimes. Polls____237____that Mr Bolsonaro is likely to lose the election. His successor could convince Germany and Norway to unfreeze the Amazon Fund, a pot of money for enforcement and____238____development that was withdrawn in 2019 amid concerns about Mr Bolsonaro’s policies. A new president could also revive talks with President Joe Biden, who has offered to____239____a $20bn fund for the rainforest once Brazil starts showing results.
But even an enlightened president will have to battle a____240____Congress, which is considering a number of laws that threaten the rainforest and its inhabitants. These include a land-regularisation bill nicknamed the “land-grabbing law” and a bill that would____241____wildcat mining on indigenous territories. In August thousands of indigenous people camped out in the capital as the supreme court debated a case that would restrict their territories to land that was____242____when a new constitution was passed in 1988. The court postponed its____243____, but Congress is considering a law that would have the____244____effect.
Better leadership in Brazil could jump-start regional efforts to boost enforcement and find sustainable____245____to deforestation for the rainforest’s inhabitants. But if Mr Bolsonaro wins again, his determination to fill the forest with roads, dams and mines could cause destruction far beyond the borders of Brazil.

Is growth good for biodiversity To answer the question, it is ____246____ to define what we mean by growth. Is growth gross domestic product (GDP), the “monetary value of all the finished goods within a country’s borders ” Or does it mean improving the human ____247____ of living Today, when people say growth, they mean GDP, a measure that is over 70 years old. Actually GDP demonstrates negative ____248____ for biodiversity, as this “growth” measures only money inflows while far more important is the balance sheet, which shows ____249____ and debts. As biodiversity delivers no cash, it has no place in GDP system, but biodiversity provides the asset side of the balance sheet, such as forests, rivers, wetlands and animals — the ____250____ goes on.
It is argued that growth is good for biodiversity in the long run as there is an environmental Kuznets curve where ____251____ conditions get worse in the early stages of modern economic growth, but improve once a growth level has been reached. According to some people, once GDP has been high, more resources are to ____252____ in conservation, and new technologies are used to protect nature. They said people would have more interest in protecting the environment, and some of the forests started to return and many ____253____ were almost eliminated. Standing in America today it might appear that the environmental Kuznets curve works.
At first sight there appears to be a ____254____. Today the US GDP is increasing while many precious species populations are also recovering. Such conditions, according to some people, can be explained by greater efficiency in cars or more efficient agricultural production. But _____255_____, the majority of the negative impacts have simply been exported. The high-polluting industries have been outsourced to developing nations. _____256_____, the bitterest punishments are largely felt beyond the borders while we Americans are enjoying high GDP and selfish biodiversity at the same time. This can be seen in the WWF annual Report, where species population _____257_____ are increasing by 7% in high-income countries and declining in middle- and low-income countries by 31% and 60% _____258_____.
It is self-evident that growth, as currently _____259_____, has a major negative impact upon biodiversity. What needs to change is the definition of growth from a GDP-essential concept to a balance-sheet _____260_____. Organizations and world community should work on creating new vision or reform that will help ensure a real balance between an improving standard of human life and a thriving biodiverse landscape.

Language studies traditionally have paid much attention to verbal and written language. But recently they have begun to consider language without ___261___ , for people regard nonverbal(非言语的) ___262___ as having meaning. Nonverbal acts either accompany verbal messages are used ___263___ . They may support or even contradict ___264___ messages. They are more likely to be used ___265___ because they are habitual and routine behaviors.
In some ___266___ , people express more non-verbally than verbally. If you ask an obviously depressed person, “What’s wrong ”, and he answers, “Nothing. I’m fine,” you probably won’t ___267___ him. When an angry person says, “Let’s ___268___ the subject. I don’t want to talk about it anymore!” actually he hasn’t ___269___ communicating. His withdrawal and ______270______ continue to convey emotional meaning.
One study showed that 93 percent of the ______271______ was communicated by the tone of the ______272______ and facial expressions, while only 7 percent of the speaker’s attitude was conveyed by words. It is ______273______ that we express our emotions and attitudes more non-verbally than verbally.
Nonverbal communication expresses ______274______ or feeling beyond words. Universal emotions, such as happiness, fear, and sadness, are expressed in a ______275______ nonverbal way throughout the world. There are, however, nonverbal differences across cultures that may be a source of confusion for foreigners. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be acceptable in some countries for men to embrace each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these acts of affection may be shocking.
What is acceptable in one culture may be completely unacceptable in another. In order to correctly interpret another culture’s style of communication, it is necessary to study the “silent language” of that culture.

My father used to judge restaurants by their bread baskets. His reasoning: If you can't get little things right, how can you be___276___ with big things
I feel that way about commas (逗号). One sign that something has gone wrong in a piece of writing is the sight of commas___277___ used around the page. My ___278___ students often insert a comma wherever they might pause between words to take in air. Then again, another sign of poor writings is the opposite: a comma desert, no pauses to be___279___ .
Such abuses usually ___280___ that my students don't grasp the usage of this mark. But commas are ___281___. They are like the fine stitches (缝线) on an expertly sewn garment: invisible, yet vital to holding the___282___ together. In dialogue, commas can ___283___ life or death: ''Kill ducks! '' vs ''Kill, ducks! '' Their absence or ___284___ creates or destroys a great article.
Then again, I shouldn't judge my students so severely. I also failed to ____285____ the quiet dignity of the comma unit, in graduate school,____286____ I taught writing to first-year students. I remember the program head, a firm, white-haired woman, fixing me with her stare and saying, ''You have no idea where the commas go or why. '' I felt ____287____ . How could I have misunderstood something so basic
Well, the thing is, commas aren't so basic and learning to____288____ them to their full potential takes years. Oscar Wilde once joked about what a ______289______day of writing involved: spending the morning _____290_____ a comma, and in the afternoon, on mature reflection, putting it back in.

Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for Melati and her sister, Isabel. But in 2013 when Melati was 12 and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose ____311____ for swimming in the waters near their home on the island of Bali. More often than not, plastic bags would circle around them as they ____312____. Then as they walked back to shore, red and white plastic shopping bags would ____313____ their legs and body.
Melati didn’t think much about it until later in 2013 when her teacher gave a lesson on world ____314____ like South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and England’s Princess Diana, whose efforts had inspired movements of ____315____ change. That day Melati walked home in ____316____, thinking something needed to be done to preserve the beautiful island from becoming ____317____ by waste.
Melati and Isabel started by sharing the idea with others. Soon they’d ____318____ a team of 15, made up of schoolfriends. They ____319____ their group ByeBye Plastic Bags(BBPB). Its mission was ____320____ stop people in Bali using plastic bags.
The following year the BBPB team spent their lunchtimes ____321____ meetings and organizing an online petition (请愿) to collect signatures to ban plastic bags. Within 24 hours of ____322____ more than 6000 people both local Balinese and people from around the world had ____323____. “This was the first moment when we knew, we were onto something,”Melati says.
Years later, the girls’ enthusiasm has resulted in big changes. In 2017, they organized Bali’s first beach clean up. Around 12,000 people collected 36 tonnes of rubbish. In 2018 BBPB ____324____ the government to ban single-use plastic bags and straws. The ban took effect in July 2019.
Today BBPB is a global youth movement and has over 50 teams in 29 countries. “We didn’t start with any clear ____325____,”Melati admits. “We didn’t know how we were going to complete a seemingly easy task but we knew that we wanted to and had the desire to figure it out.”
