Think the following questions and share your thoughts with your classmates.
Yes, there is. At the beginning of the story, we know Jimmy has never seen a real dog. It also seems that he spends a lot of time with Robutt. Jimmy plays with Robutt enthusiastically, shouting “Come on, Robutt”. In the middle of the passage, we are told that “Jimmy couldn’t go wrong while Robutt was around”, indicating that Robutt protects Jimmy well.
Intensive reading
Think the following questions and share your thoughts with your classmates.
One possible answer: There is one book named I, Robot, which is also written by Isaac Asimov. In my opinion, this book can be regarded as one of the best sci-fi novels about robots. Anyone interested in sci-fi novels shouldn’t miss it.

Think the following questions and share your thoughts with your classmates.
One possible answer: I personally would like to encounter the second one in my lifetime, as I firmly believe that when humans can establish a good relationship with robots, it feels so nice, just as humans have an indispensable partner.

Work in pairs. Give a talk on whether it is possible to have a real friendship with a robot.
Q1: 1) Why do Jimmy and his parents have different feelings towards Robutt
Post-reading
Because Jimmy was born on the Moon, he has never seen a real dog. He has been getting along well with Robutt, and thus has developed an affection for him. He cannot figure out why a real dog is better than a mechanical dog, despite his father’s explanation. While Jimmy’s parents have seen real dogs before they left Earth. They know what real dogs look like. They think Robutt is just a machine.

1. The outer side of the crater sloped southward and the Earth, which was low in the southern sky, was nearly full, so that the entire crater-slope was brightly lit.
Language points
Paraphrase: The entire crater-slope faced south and was brightly lit by the sun’s reflection on the Earth, which was just above the horizon to the south.
Language points
The outer side of the crater sloped southward,第二个并列句的主干是 the Earth was nearly full。
Language points
She leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek.
Language points
He didn’t pass the exam , which disappointed me.
Language points
I took no notice of him, so that he flew into a rage.
Language points
He practices speaking English every day, so that his spoken English is fluent.
辨析: so that 后面也可接目的状语从句,此时 so that 后面的从句多有 can / could / may 等词, 意为 “目的是”。例如:
The old man takes more exercise so that he can live longer.
Language points
2. The slope was a gentle one and even the weight of the spacesuit couldn’t keep Jimmy from racing up it in a floating hop that made the gravity seem nonexistent.
Paraphrase: Jimmy was able to bound easily up the gentle slope, hardly noticing the weight of his spacesuit because of the Moon’s low gravity.
Language points
句中有 keep sb. from doing sth 这个短语,意为 “阻止某人做某事” , 相当于 stop sb. from doing sth。
We have to take measures to keep this kind of thing from happening again.
例如:These worries kept her from sleeping properly.
Language points
2) float v.

Language points
3. Jimmy couldn’t go wrong while Robutt was around, tripping him when he was too near a rock, or jumping on him to show how much he loved him, or circling around and squeaking low and scared when Jimmy hid behind a rock, when all the time Robutt knew well enough where he was.
Language points
Paraphrase: Jimmy was always safe while Robutt was with him. Robutt would knock him out of trouble when he was too near a rock, jump on him to show how much he loved him, or go round in circles making noises as if he was scared when Jimmy hid behind a rock. Robutt always knew very well where Jimmy was.
Language points
1) 此句中的 tripping … a rock, jumping … loved him, circling around and squeaking … where he was 为四个并列的 doing 结构,在句子中作 was around 的伴随状语。
Language points
2) 此句中的 trip 意为 to make someone fall by putting your foot in front of them when they are moving “把(某人)绊倒”
He didn’t notice me and stretched out his foot suddenly, almost tripping me.
4. Jimmy held out his arms and Robutt was in them in one bound.
Language points
