(2019 . 山东济南一中高二期末检测)At a farm off narrow Lane near Lexngton, Kentucky, US, old-fashioned houses look over the little red barn(畜舍). The farm is mostly empty now Jim Mahan and his family, who lived there for generations have moved to a different plot of land in northern Fayette County. As land is sold, houses go up where there once were fields.
But during the summer, the barn is filled with city kids who have come to enjoy the farm. They’re members of the Fayette County Livestock(FCL) Club, which showcases skills as varied as cutting wool. The barn is where they look after the animals. “A lot of Lexington kids don’t know anything about farm life,” said Adria Meier, 17, who has looked after goats and sheep for three years. “There is so much to learn.”
The dozen or so children who take care of their goats and sheep at the little red barn must do a six-hour class before they get an animal. They pay for their own animals but get special club programs, such as one that provides vet(兽医) care.
Mahan lets the group use the barn for free, and the kids spend up to three hours a day there during the summer. But as his land gets sold, he doesn’t know whether the club can continue. What makes the FCL Club special is that most of the kids can’t just walk out their doors and take care of their animals. Most are driven to the barn by their mothers, who usu ally hang around and chat as their kids feed and exercise the animals.
There are valuable lessons learned along the way. For instance, don’t cut wool off your goat when there is wind and sheep are social animals and will cry loudly when separated. “Tending to animals helps teach us responsibility. Unlike learning to shoot an arrow, caring for an animal isn’t something you can simply abandon,” said Carly Playforth, 16 of Lexington.

(2019 . 河南新乡一中高二检测)Scientists in Britain have managed to teach bumblebees(大黄蜂)to pull strings to get to food and then pass on what they have learned to others in their colony(群体)—showing a high level of intelligence despite their tiny brains.
Researchers at Queen Mary University of London said the experiments, often used to test the intelligence of apes(猿) and birds, showed for the first time that some insects are up to the task, and can also pass skills on through several generations.
The findings add to the evidence suggesting the ability for “culture spread”—the ability to learn and pass on knowledge and skills—may not be exclusive to humans.
In the research, published in the journal PLOS Biology on Tuesday, the scientists were able to train 23 out of a group of 40 bees to pull strings with their legs and feet.
The strings were attached to discs—or artificial “flowers”—containing food at their center but placed under a transparent screen. The bees, spotting the food beneath the screen, learned to pull the “flowers” out by pulling the string with their legs and feet to be able to get to it.
From another group of bees given the chance to solve the task without any training only two of 110 were successful.
Another group of bees was then allowed to observe the trained bees pulling the strings, and 60 percent of them successfully learned the skill. Finally, trained bees were put in colonies, and the scientists found the technique spread success fully to a majority of the colony’s worker bees.
Lars Chittka, a Queen Mary University professor who guided the project, said the team is interested in figuring out the brain processes behind the bees’ learning and teaching skills.
( )4. What does the underlined word “exclusive” in Paragraph 3probably mean
A. Ordinary B. Unique C. Beneficial D. Widespread
( )5.What did the researchers find about bees
A. Bees learn best in insects.
B. Bees are as clever as birds.

A. What else bees can do.
B. Where bees learn skills.
C. How bees teach others.
D. How bees' brains work.
( )7. What may be the best title for the text
A. Small bees, great abilities
B. Bees can learn and teach
C. Bees are smarter

(2019 . 福建福州市高二检测)A walk through the galleries of Quebec’s Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) places individuals face-to-face with some 43, 000 artworks ranging from Chinese ceramics to Inuit sculpture.
While the visit is an incredible cultural experience,a group of local physicians will soon be able to prescribe (开处方) museum visits as treatment for some illnesses.
“We know that art contributes to neural(神经的)activity,” said MMFA director Nathalie Bondil. “What we see is that being in contact with art can really help your well-being.”
Hélène Boyer, vice president of a Montreal-based medical association, explains that museum visits have been shown to increase levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter(神经传导物质)known as the happy chemical which helps to lift the mood.
According to Boyer, the small increase in hormones as sociated with enjoying an afternoon of art is similar to that offered by exercise, making museum visits prescriptions ideal for the elderly experiencing pain that prevents them from regularly joining in physical activity.
The museum visits are designed to improve traditional methods. As Bondil notes, spending time in a peaceful environment can provide a welcome distraction. “What is the most important is this experience can help them escape from their own pain,” she says. “When you enter the museum, you escape from the speed of our daily life.”
“I am convinced that in the 21st century, culture will be what physical activity was for health in the 20th century,” said Bondil. “Some people would do well to recall that just in the 19th century, sports were believed to do harm to the body. Just as doctors now prescribe exercise, they will be able to prescribe a visit to the MMFA.”
( )8. What does Hélène Boyer think of museum visits
A. They can cheer people up.
B. They can reduce physical activity.
C. They can slow down our life pace.
D. They can increase levels of art appreciation.
( )9. How do museum visits affect people
A. Stop them concentrating on pain.
B. Stop them focusing on traditional methods.
C. Encourage them not to be absent-minded.
D. Encourage them to slow their steps while walking.
( )10. What does the last paragraph suggest
A. Physical activity was popular in the 19th century.
B. Sports are considered to be harmful to the body.
C. Ideas of treating illnesses are changing over time.
D. Doctors prescribe museum visits regularly now.
( )11. What is the main idea of the text
A. Museum visits are ideal for the elderly.
B. The happy chemical helps to lift the mood.
C. The peaceful environment helps escape pain.
D. Cultural activities will promote health.

Plants are boring. They just sit there photosynthesizing(光合作用)while animals have all the fun.Right Not so much. A new study has found that there is a long history of interactions between ants and plants. The ants and plants co-evolution(协同进化)started with ants feeding on plants and plants evolving ant-friendly features.
Plants make a number of different structures that are specific for ant use. Some plants have evolved features that persuade ants into defending them from attack from other insects and even mammals. These include hollow thorns that ants will live inside, or extra nectar(琼浆) on leaves or stems for the ants to eat. Some ants will just cheat and take the nectar and run, but some will stick around and attack anything that tries to hurt the plant. Other plants get ants to help the em move their seeds around, by providing them with rich food packets attached to the seeds. The ant will pick up the seed and carry it away, eat the food packet, and leave the seed--often in a nutrient-rich area where it ll grow better, and since it's farther away from its parent, it won t have to compete for resources.
But scientists weren’t sure how the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants got started. If evolution is an arms race between species developing ways to make use of their neighbors, then scientists wanted to know whether plants or ants fired the first shot. It was a chicken-and-egg question whether things started with ants developing behaviors to take advantage of plants, or plants evolving structures to take advantage of ants.
The history of ants and plants evolving together goes back to the time of the dinosaurs, and it's not easy to tell from fossils who fired the first shot. However, it is a question of little significance. Scientists say their study matters because it provides a look at how these widespread and complex interactions evolved.
( )12. Some plants attach food packets to their seeds in order to______.
A. reward the ants
B. make a fool of ants
C. provide nutrition for the seeds
D. get the seeds moved around
( )13. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us
A. How plants and ants interact.
B. What ants do to protect plants.
C. How plants and ants survive attacks.
D. Why plants and ants need co-evolution.
( )14. Which is true about the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants
A. Ants depended more upon plants.
B. It caused a race for better evolution.
C How it got started was uncertain.
D. It was of little value for future studies.
( )15. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A. To introduce a science research method.
B. To inform readers of a latest research finding.
C. To arouse readers’ interest in science research.
D. To criticize people’s traditional views about plants.

(2020 . 广东省六校高二联考)Correct planting methods can help a tree grow healthily. 16 One of them is choosing an improper planting place, which may be harmful to the tree. Some soils aren’t good for planting some trees. 17 It’ll help you determine the kind of fertilizers(肥料) necessary for the tree.
Digging too deep or too narrow a hole is also a mistake we tend to make while planting a tree. If the hole is dug too deep, the roots don’t get enough oxygen supply, resulting in improper growth of the tree. Besides, a narrow hole won’t allow the roots to expand and support the tree firmly. 18 Ideally(理想地), the planting hole for a tree should be twice as wide and deep as the root ball.
To protect the roots of a tree, we need to put a mulch(护根) on them. First of all, it’s really important to select the right type of mulch. 19 In addition, we must use a proper amount of mulching. Over mulching may cause damage to the roots, while inadequate mulching may result in dryness around the roots.
20 Walk around the trees to recognize the problems that have appeared, and fix them before they go out of control.
A. Different species require different planting places.
B. Most newly planted trees die because of too much water
C. However, there are some mistakes we often make while planting trees
D. We should make our choice based on the plant species and the type of soil
E. So having a soil test before deciding on the planting place would be wiser
F. The most important thing is to monitor the growth of the tree on a regular basis
G. This may weaken the tree and its ability to stand up to unfavorable weather conditions.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season we had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon we would lose ever thing.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for the family when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn’t walking in his usual way. He was obviously walking with a great effort, trying to be as ill as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow and purposeful step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked being very careful not to spill the water he carried Branches and thorns slapped(拍打) his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned against a tree to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him But Billy walked right up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion lift its head with great effort to lap(舔饮) up the water in my beautiful boy’s hand.

Boys and girls,
I’m honored to give this speech. With the development of society and economy, the number of cars is increasing quickly, giving off more carbon dioxide, causing global warming. In order to protect our environment, it is high time that we should go green.
We should raise people’s awareness of the importance of going green by riding bicycles instead of using cars. What’s more, we should make use of water, electricity and so on properly. It is a good idea to classify our rubbish and recycle it in our daily life.
That’s all. Thank you.
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. My curiosity once again drove me to follow him back. After he reached the kitchen, he turned on the tap. As he was trying hard to cup both hands to receive the water, it was still running away through his fingers. And he also had great difficulty turning off the tap with hands occupied, so sorry and self-condemned for his wasting of water. Wearing a note of upset on his face, he carried it carefully toward the woods.
Paragraph 2:
And later I knew what was going on. It began to make sense to me why he wasn’t walking in his usual way. I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart working so hard to save a life. As my began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops. It was as if nature itself was moved by the great effort made by my son and began to weep with pride.
