Rich as a King
(2020 辽宁大连高三一模)William I, who conquered England some 950 years ago, had wealth, power and an army. Yet although William was very rich by the standard of his time, he had nothing like a flush toilet(抽水马桶), paper towels, or a riding lawn mower(割草机). How did he get by
History books are filled with wealthy people who were poor compared to me. I have storm windows, Croesus did not. Entire nations trembled before Alexander the Great, but he couldn’t buy cat food. Czar Nicholas lacked an electric saw.
Given how much better off I am than so many famous dead people, you’d think I’d be content. The trouble is that, like most people, I compare my wealth with that of living persons: neighbours, school classmates, famous TV people. The greed I feel toward my friend Howard’s new kitchen is not reduced by the fact that no kings ever had a refrigerator with glass doors.
There is really no rising or falling standard of living. Over the centuries people simply find different things to feel sad about. You’d think that simply not having disease would put us in a good mood, but no, we want a hot bath too.
Of course, one way to achieve happiness would be to realise that even by today’s standards the things I own are pretty nice. My house is smaller than the houses of many investment bankers, but even so it has a lot more rooms than my wife and I can keep clean.
Besides, to people looking back at our era from a century or two in the future, these bankers’ fancy counter tops and my own worn Formica will seem equally shabby. I can’t keep up with my neighbours right now. But just wait.
1. What does the underlined phrase “get by” in the first paragraph mean
A. Succeed as a king.
B. Deal with complaints.
C. Live in a satisfactory way.
D. Get some extra money.
2. How many historical figures are mentioned to compare lives in the past and present
A. 3.
B. 4.
C. 5.
D. 6.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards life
A. Doubtful.
B. Optimistic.
C. Uncaring.
D. Cautious.

(2020 湖北高三八校第一次联考)I always wanted to be extraordinarily good at something. Not just as in, “Great job, Jimbo!” No, I wanted to be best-in-class, awe-inspiring, tip-top: a world-famous genius, like Michael Phelps, or Mark Zuckerberg.
Unfortunately, my version of reality did not quite line up with this delusional vision. I was a good swimmer, but I peaked at the collegiate State Championships level. My academic record was pretty solid, but I never would have made it into one of those ivy-league schools.
Though I rose to above-average status in a couple of areas, the disappointing truth was that I would never amount to anything more than a mid-sized fish in a small pond. God apparently had other plans.
What drove me crazy, though, was the superstar talent thrown in my face at every turn. Some folks just seemed to get an unfair intensive dose (剂量)of it. Why couldn’t I be like Beraie Williams, the famed New York Yankees player who also happens to be a world-class jazz guitar virtuoso(艺术大师)?
Some say greatness is simply a function of putting in the practice time. Around ten thousand hours, to be precise, according to author Malcolm Gladwell. I don’t question the theory of devoting extraordinary efforts to developing one’s expertise, but it seems that raw talent is equally important. You either have it or you don’t.
I’ve heard that as people approach middle age, their life satisfaction increases because they begin to accept the gap between the expectations for themselves and the reality. After a few decades of frustration without the desired results, we eventually come to terms with how our lives turned out, even if it falls far short of our idealised youthful expectations.
Hope bends, it seems.
4. What does the word “delusional” in Para. 2 most probably mean
A. Imaginary.
B. Realistic.
C. Disappointing.
D. Material.
5. In the passage, the writer thinks of himself as ________.
A. a world-famous genius
B. a mid-sized fish in a small pond
C. a world-class virtuoso
D. a student in an ivy-league school
6. According to the writer, what makes “greatness”
A. Extraordinary efforts.
B. Ten thousand hours of practice.
C. Raw talent.
D. Talent and time.
7. Which of the following might be the best title
A. Hope Bends
B. Frustrating Decades
C. Practice Works
D. Youthful Expectations

(2020 广东湛江高三一模)It took multiple weddings for Christine Law to realise what she needed to do. In the summer of 2014, her schedule was packed with friends, marriage celebrations—flower-filled occasions that got her thinking, “Where do all the flowers go after the party ” More often than not, they were thrown away. Law was confident she could find a better use for them.
By August, she had a plan: convince couples and companies hosting events to donate their flowers, which she would pick up and deliver within 48 hours to seniors across the city. She wanted to bring beauty into the lives of the elderly. She drew on her experience through being a volunteer in non—profit institutions in order to set up her own organisation, which she called Floranthropie. Not having enough bouquets (花束)for all 150 people of a health centre, Law asked the staff to provide a list of patients who needed cheering up most.
“The first woman I approached thought it was a mistake, and that the flowers couldn’t possibly be for her, ” says Law. “I said they were a gift, and we talked for a half hour.”
In addition to health centres, Floranthropie focuses on community groups devoted to the elderly. Laetitia Thélème is a volunteer for Les Petits Fieres, an organisation that aims to help the elderly who don’t have a support system. The group receives a dozen or so bouquets from Floranthropie monthly, and then redistributes them. “Our motto is ‘flowers before bread’,” says Thélème. “We don’t focus on primary care, but rather on nourishing(滋养)the spirit. Floranthropie helps us do that. It’s amazing what a big difference a small bouquet can make.”
In the beginning, most of Floranthropie, s donations came through word of mouth. These days, Law receives messages from strangers via her organisation’s Facebook page and has connected with corporations and flower wholesalers. Law hopes to expand Floranthropie nationally, but at this point is happy to be able to oversee each delivery personally.
8. What made Christine Law set up Floranthropie
A. The waste of flowers.
B. The loneliness of seniors.
C. The persuasion of other friends.
D. The warm atmosphere of weddings.
9. What was the woman’s reaction to Christine Law’s flowers
A. She was moved.
B. She was excited.
C. She was worried.
D. She was surprised.
10. What can we infer about Floranthropie from Laetitia Thélème’s words
A. It should focus on primary care.
B. It is benefiting more than the elderly.
C. It is doing something of great importance.
D. It should cooperate with more non-profit institutions.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Volunteer Your Time
B. Don’t Throw Flowers Away
C. Special Delivery Makes Your Day
D. Brighten Seniors, Lives with Flowers

(2020 山东济宁高三一模)“If I only had a little humility, I’d be perfect, ” the media giant Ted Turner supposedly said sometime in the 1990s. Why be modest Aristotle said, “All men by nature desire to know.” Intellectual humility is a particular instance of humility, since you can be down-to-earth about most things but still ignore your mental limitations.
Intellectual humility means recognising that we don’t know everything. Actually, it means we should acknowledge that we’re probably biased in our belief about just how much we understand and seek out the sources of wisdom that we lack.
The Internet and digital media have created the impression of limitless knowledge at our fingertips. But, by making us lazy, they have opened up a space that ignorance can fill. The psychologist Tania Lombrozo of the University of California explained how technology enhances our illusions(错觉)of wisdom. She argues that the way we access information is critical to our understanding—and the more easily we can recall an image, word or statement, the more likely we’ll think we’ve successfully learned it, and so withdraw from effortful cognitive processing. Logical puzzles presented in an unfriendly font(字体), for example, can encourage someone to make extra effort to solve them. Yet this approach runs counter to the nice designs of the apps and sites that populate our screens, where our brain processes information in a “smooth” way. What about all the information that presents online Well, your capacity to learn from it depends on your attitudes. Intellectually humble people don’t hide or ignore their weaknesses. In fact, they see them as sources of personal development, and use arguments as an opportunity to refine their views. People who are humble by nature tend to be more open-minded and quicker to resolve disputes, since they recognise that their own opinions might not be valid.
At the other end of the scale lies intellectual arrogance. Such arrogance almost always originates from the egocentric bias—the tendency to overestimate their own virtue or importance, ignoring the role of chance or the influence of other people’s actions on their lives. This is what makes these people credit success to themselves and failure to circumstance. From an evolutionary perspective, intellectual arrogance can also be seen as a way of achieving dominance through forcing one’s view on others. Intellectually arrogant people hardly invest mental resources in discussion or working towards group consensus, thus making it hard for groups to work successfully.
The Thrive Centre for Human Development in California, which seeks to help young people turn into successful adults, is funding a series of major studies about intellectual humility. Their hypothesis is that humility, curiosity and openness are key to a fulfilling life. “Without humility, you are unable to learn,” Laszlo Bock, Google’s Head of People Operations, notes.
12. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. the harm arrogance does to us
B. the key elements to a fulfilling life
C. the significance of intellectual humility
D. the way people access information online
13. Technology enhances our illusions of wisdom because it ________.
A. enables people to think critically
B. offers too much unreliable information
C. allows easy access to abundant information
D. makes it hard for people to recall information
14. According to Para. 3, intellectually humble people ________.
A. value others’ opinions more than their own
B. use online information to better themselves
C. are unwilling to show their strengths
D. prefer to solve difficult problems
15. The author will probably agree that ________.
A. intellectual arrogance is the result of evolution
B. intellectually arrogant people often lack team spirits
C. successful people are often unaware of their limitations
D. circumstances don’t favour intellectually arrogant people

(2020 山东临沂一模)Failing an exam can make someone feel really bad about themselves. A lot of people who fail an exam might think that failing an exam makes them a failure in life. 16
Don’t make fun of them. Failing a test can be a seriously upset thing. And even if they seem okay about it, they might be hiding how they really feel. Don’t make fun of them for failing. 17
Remind them that everyone fails at some point. 18 So tell them not everyone can succeed every time, even if they don’t talk about it. Help them deal with their feelings about the failure by reminding them that everyone fails, and this one failure doesn’t influence them.
19 Right after they’ve failed an exam, it’s easy to feel like they’ll never do anything well again. If you know someone who has failed the same test or exam, but then became successful, tell them about it! It can remind them that good things will happen again, too.
Help them figure out new ways to study. Ask how long they studied, how often they took notes in class, and if they ever felt like they weren’t doing enough. Help them look up studying methods on websites and select methods they haven’t tried before. 20 Using a new method can lead to different results.
A. Tell them to stay the same.
B. Offer them positive examples.
C. It’s necessary for them to know that.
D. Or don’t compare their scores with yours.
E. Share some ways that you find successful.
F. It doesn’t mean that you are a failure in life.

(2020 山东济宁二模)A brother and sister made their usual hurried pre-Christmas visit to the little farm, where lived their elderly parents with their small herd (群)of horses.
The young folks had fond memories of their childhood here. Everything was perfect except the aging old horse, “The Old One”.
Doubtfully, the young folks asked the old couple, “Why do you not at least get rid of ‘The Old One’’’
The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, and replied softly, “We keep her because of love. Nothing else, just love.”
Worried and confused, the young folks wished the old couple a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.
The old couple shook their heads in sorrow. A tear fell upon their cheeks. How was it that these young folks did not understand the peace of the love that filled their hearts
Because of the unhappy leave-taking, no one noticed the first spark fall in the bam (马厩) None but the “The Old One” _
In a matter of minutes, the bam was full of hungry flames. With a cry of horror and despair, the old couple sank sobbing to the ground, helpless. The bam was in ruins.
The old man turned to his wife, forcing a smile, “We have lost much. Let us gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair and pray for our beloved ‘The Old One’”.
The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they got to the peak of the hill, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and puzzled, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath the pine tree was their Christmas gift— “The Old One” lay close to the trunk of the tree, with the entire herd.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
As it turned out, the moment ‘The Old One’ saw the smoke, she pushed the door and led the horses through it. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Spotting the old couple, “The Old One” seemed to be happy.

第一节 One possible version :
Good morning, everyone!
I’m Li Hua. It’s my great honour to stand here to deliver my speech. It has been three years since I started my high school. During the three years, not only have I made some true friends who shared sorrows and joys with me, but also I have gained various knowledge.
Before leaving, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to my teachers. It was they who patiently answered our endless questions.
Besides, I owe many thanks to my dear classmates. Without their help and encouragement, I couldn’t have overcome so many difficulties. I will live up to the expectations of my teachers and my parents.
Thank you for your listening.
第二节 One possible version:
As it turned out, the moment “The Old One” saw the smoke, she pushed the door and led the horses through it. The hungry flames were around them, licking their lips and hopping like rabbits. So frightened were the horses that they dashed about aimlessly. After what seemed to be ages, “The Old One” managed to calm them down. Slowly and with great dignity, she led them up the hill, stepping cautiously through the snow. As usual, she gathered the herd of horses under the old pine tree, where they often took a rest after eating grass.
Spotting the old couple, “The Old One” seemed to be happy. She did not disappoint those she loved. Her body was weak with years, tired from the climb, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift to the old couple. Seeing the unexpected “Christmas gift”, the old couple couldn’t help shouting their praise and joy...and again the peace of love filled their hearts. Tears flowing down, the old couple gently stroked “The Old One”, murmuring, “Because of love. Only because of love.”
