Bianca Brown, a junior at Springfield High School, had always enjoyed arts and crafts (工艺) as a child. So, when her busy schedule was crossed out by COVID-19, Bianca looked to her past to design her future.
She ordered ingredients (材料) and mixed them together to create soaps of different shapes and other personal care products. “I really could start a business doing this,” she thought.
Thus, Bianca created Simply B.LLC, a beauty brand (品牌) selling personal care products to friends and family at first. Through the use of the social media app, TikTok, Bianca was able to reach thousands of customers.
“I woke up to 50 orders the next day after my first video spread on the Internet,” she said. “It’s unbelievable. I don’ t even know how I really got all that done, to be honest with you.”
Bianca is among the busiest at her high school. She plays volleyball, runs track and field, and recently started a Black student union. She is a member of the community service club and is also a part of the National Honor Society. With her high marks, it’s clear that none of her academic (学业的) responsibilities take a back seat to her small business. But still, Bianca succeeds as both a student and businesswoman.
Bianca hopes to continue building her brand in the future and possibly help other children follow their dreams. “I really want to influence other kids and show them how to be young businessmen or businesswomen and feel that someone could be encouraged by me,” she said.;

Weeds compete for soil nutrients, water, space, and sunlight with the crops farmers grow to help feed people. Now a third—generation weeding robot, armed with lasers and powered by Al, offers a perfect labor—saving device.
Trundling(移动)down a row of crops, a battery of twelve cameras scan the ground, identifying weeds through machine—leaning and killing them with a CO2 laser. CO2 lasers use reactions between nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen to generate powerful beams of light that are concentrated through mirrors inside the laser.
The Autonomous Weeder by Carbon Robotics can root out 100,000 weeds per hour, and clear 15—20 acres in a single day—numbers that require a person working an entire season to match. The robot’s onboard supercomputer ensures millimeter precision with its laser so as to avoid accidently clipping(剪掉)crops.
“This is one of the most creative and valuable technologies that I’ve seen as a farmer,” said James Johnson of Carzalia Farm in a statement, who has used Carbon Robotics’ technology on his farm. “I expect the robots to go mainstream because of how effectively they address some of farming’s most critical issues, including the overuse of chemicals, process efficiency, and labor. The sky is the limit.” It’s no surprise that the 2021 model of the Autonomous Weeder has already sold out, even considering its price tag which was quoted at “hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
The de-weeding method of the robot is Certified Organic and in line with regenerative farming practices. Cost—effective weed control is the biggest barrier to entry with organic farming, and agriculturalists looking to make the switch finally have an alternative to help them get their vegetables out to people.;
8. Which part of the weeder helps clear grass precisely
A.The CO2 laser. B.The battery of cameras.
C.Mirrors inside the laser. D.The onboard supercomputer.;
9. What does the underlined sentence “The sky is the limit.” mean in paragraph 4
A.The robots won’t spread widely.
B.The invention is very promising.
C.The weeder addresses limited issues.
D.The technology needs further improvement.;
10. What does James think of the weeder
A.Flexible. B.Affordable. C.Energy—saving. D.Environment—friendly.;
11. What can be inferred about the weeder from the last paragraph
A.It contributes to a higher output. B.It helps develop organic farming.
C.It will replace humans in farming. D.It isn’t accepted by agriculturalists.

Far below every town and city lies an invisible network of pipes crucial to the lives of their residents. Once water disappears down a pipe or toilet, it’s out of sight, out of mind. The water flows into containers that carry rainwater, wastewater and solid waste away. There are three main types of sewers (下水道): sanitary sewers, storm sewers and combined sewers. Among them, sanitary sewers function as a city’s veins (静脉). Water containing human and industrial waste is collected in sanitary sewers and carried to wastewater treatment plants. There, the solid waste is separated from the water, which is then purified before being released back into the environment. It will be reused for industrial, agricultural or environmental purposes. Furthermore, the gas from water treatment can be used to produce energy. They not only contribute to a healthy environment and good quality of life, but also achieve the goal of sustainable development.
While wastewater collection and treatment are critical to the health of urban residents, storm sewers also play an important role. In urban areas, green has given way to concrete. As a consequence, there has been a loss of the land’s natural water retention as concrete cannot take in rain-water. When an extreme weather event causes heavy rain, storm sewers must cope with the water, so it does not flood the city. However, storm sewers are only part of the solution to water management and flood prevention.
To reduce flooding, an integrated urban management plan has been adopted, where all the factors — storm sewers, land planning and economic development — are considered together. Engineering innovations, additional facilities and increased green space requirements in new development projects have improved water retention in cities.
Sewers help improve urban public health, prevent urban flooding and boost environmental protection. Together they protect vital water resources and maintain the safety of people and property.;
12. What’s the function of sanitary sewers
A.Cleaning dirty water. B.Collecting solid waste.
C.Delivering used water. D.Producing useful gas.;
13. What does the underlined word “retention” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Absorption. B.Treatment. C.Purification. D.Distribution.;
14. What’s the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 4
A.To explain a complicated theory. B.To provide supporting facts.
C.To raise improved suggestions. D.To describe a recent phenomenon.;
15. What is the best title for the text
A.Urban Unseen Network B.Modern City’s Management
C.Extreme Weather’s Solution D.Wastewater’s Potential Threat

Two fast friends were Willie and his little dog Bounce. Willie could never think of taking a walk without Bounce. Cake and play were equally shared between them. Willie taught his dog many cunning tricks, and often said that Bounce could do almost anything in the world but talk. Then on a bright summer afternoon, Willie had strolled with Bounce down to the river, which was not more than two blocks from his father’s store — Mr. Brown’s store.
Willie began to throw stones into the water, and to watch ripples (涟漪) as they made one circle after another. Bounce lay on the grass, watching the flies buzzing around his nose, and catching any that came too near.
There were some logs floating in the river near the bank. Willie jumped upon one of them to see if he could throw a stone across the river. He drew back, sent the stone with all strength, just as it left his hand, the log turned and he fell into the water. He was frightened, for he did not know how to swim, and there was no one to hear, though he called as loud as he could for help.
Not being a big water dog, poor Bounce ran up and down the bank two or three times, barking, looking first at Willie and then around.
Then he started, as fast as he could run, up the street towards Mr. Brown’s store.
Bounce, seeing Mr. Brown realizing something was wrong, headed for the river.

My Winter Vacation Life
The winter vacation has just come to an end, which I made the most of to benefit me significantly.
In the first place, I had a good relaxation after a stressful term by doing something interesting like seeing a film and hanging out with my best friends during the Spring Festival. Furthermore, I firmly stuck to my resolution of improving my math and devoted most of my time to overcoming the mathematical problems that had long been troubling me, which helped build up my confidence in learning.
The vacation combining entertainment with learning did make me physically and mentally fulfilled.
Then he started, as fast as he could run, up the street towards Mr. Brown’s store. When he got there the door was shut, but he scratched against it and barked loudly, until someone came and opened it. He caught hold of Mr. Brown’s clothes, then ran to the door, then back again, catching at him, barking and jumping. Noticing the dog’s abnormal behavior, Mr. Brown realized something must have been wrong. He put on his hat and went with the dog.
Bounce, seeing Mr. Brown realizing something was wrong, headed for the river. Finally, the father came to the river. He saw Willie’s hat floating on the water, and his small arm thrown up. Without thinking twice, he sprang in and caught him just as he was going down for the last time, and quickly carried him to the bank. On the bank, Willie was given first aid and came to life after a while. When he got over his fright, no one seemed to be more delighted than Bounce, his true friends.
