(2020 河北衡水中学二调)In beautiful rural Montana lies the town of Livingston. Around half the students in the Livingston School District qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, according to local educator Rachael Jones, known as “Farmer Jones” . She is the director of the Livingston Farm to School program, which uses the district’s two greenhouses and four gardens to grow food that supplements(补充)school meals while offering kids hands- on lessons. Jones said, “In many places around the country, if you can’t pay for your school meal, you don’t eat. Well, here, we don’t turn anyone away.”
The town’s school district and community members started the program eight years ago. It was part of the National Farm to School Network, which aims to increase access to local food and nutrition education across the country. Jones, who attended public school in Livingston as a kid, has headed up the local program since 2014. Farm to School enriches curriculums in all of the schools through garden lessons, cafeteria and kitchen lessons, and classroom lessons.
Research has shown that healthy school meals can better academic performance, including improving test scores. Though the Farm to School program is not aimed only at lower-income students, Jones said, “Such kids are more likely to eat lunch provided by the school.” Eventually she wants to get healthy, affordable meals on the plate of every child in Livingston.
It is important for kids to understand where their food comes from. That’s a life-changing experience for them. Jones said, “When I grew up a big force in my life was my grandma Ethel. She taught me from a really early age the value of growing my own food. I worked in her gardens with her and somehow, through all of those experiences—eating her tomatoes and canning pickles(泡菜)with her—it really built up my trust and knowledge in food systems. I, m so thankful to her!”

(2020 广西柳州 二模)Chinese consumers’ crazy appetite for luxury goods and services appears unstoppable, with just 2 percent of the Chinese population responsible for one-third of the world’s luxury items.
As China’s economic miracle develops, the market opportunities for all sorts of luxury goods and services are increasing. Luxury consumption in China now extends ways beyond well-known car, clothing and jewelry brands. For example, the luxury jet market in China is the fastest-growing in the world, even outstripping that of the United States, with a market share of 25 percent. This trend appears to continue, with 20 to 30 percent growth expected in China, compared with only 2 to 3 percent in the US. But more importantly, China’s luxury jet market growth represents a major development in the private consumption of luxury items.
China’s high-quality red wine market also provides evidence of the growth in private consumption of luxury goods. In 2013, China became the largest market for red wine in the world, even overtaking France, with 1.86 billion bottles consumed in China last year. Over the past five years, China’s red wine consumption has grown 136 percent.
According to my ongoing consumer research in this area while working at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, public consumption of such expensive global luxury brands such as Prada and Armani is easily explained by the desire to “gain face” and publicly display social climbing through material possessions. On the other hand, it is “self-reward” that lies behind consumer motivation in this area. Chinese consumers who have experienced rapid financial and economic gains appear particularly prone to the need to reward themselves for their success. But this has little to do with “gaining face” and impressing others and much more to do with the need for personal contentment.
Finally, the growth in private luxury consumption in China is set to continue in part due to the maturity of the Chinese consumer and advancement of Chinese consumer culture generally.
8. What do you think the author would most probably be
A. A news reporter.
B. An accountant.
C. A professor.
D. A conductor.
9. What can we learn from Paragraphs 2 and 3
A. China’s luxury jet market growth is only 2% to 3%.
B. France was once the largest market for red wine in the world before 2013.
C. The luxury jet market in the US shares 25% of the jet consumption in the world.
D. China’s red wine consumption has increased to 1.86 billion bottles since 2013.
10. The main idea of the fourth paragraph is ________.
A. public consumption of global luxury brands is increasing
B. Chinese consumers have experienced rapid financial and economic gains
C. Chinese consumers enjoy “gain face” and “self-reward”
D. the reason why Chinese consumers are fond of the global luxury goods
11. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Future Private Luxury Consumption in China
B. Chinese Appetite for Luxury Goods and Services
C. The Potential Luxury Jet Market in China
D. The Maturity of the Chinese Consumers

(2020 山东淄博一模)The idea that richer countries are happier may seem intuitively obvious. However, in 1974, research by economist Richard Easterlin found otherwise. He discovered that while individuals with higher incomes were more likely to be happy, this did not hold at a national level. In the United States, for example, average income per person rose steadily between 1946 and 1970, but reported happiness levels showed no positive long-term trend; in fact, they declined between 1960 and 1970. These differences between nation- level and individual results gave rise to the term “Easterlin Paradox”: the idea that a higher rate of economic growth does not result in higher long-term happiness.
Having access to additional income seems to only provide a temporary surge in happiness. Since a certain minimum income is needed for basic necessities, it’s possible that the happiness boost from extra cash isn’t that great once you rise above the poverty line. This would explain Easterlin’s findings in the United States and other developed countries. He argued that life satisfaction does rise with average incomes but only in the short term.
Recent research has challenged the Easterlin Paradox, however. In 2013, sociologists Ruut Veenhoven and Floris Vergunst conducted a study using statistics from the World Database of Happiness. Their analysis revealed a positive correlation between economic growth and happiness. Another study by the University of Michigan found that there is no maximum wealth threshold at which more money ceases to contribute to your happiness: “If there is a satiation point, we are yet to reach it.” The study’s findings suggested that every extra dollar you earn makes you happier. With much debate about the relationship between money and happiness, it’s clear that happiness itself is a complex concept and depends on many factors.
According to psychologists Selin Kesebir and Shigehiro Oishi, happiness also depends on how your income compares to the people around you. They argue that a country’s economic growth only makes its citizens happier if wealth is evenly distributed. In emerging countries with high income inequality—where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer~ average happiness tends to drop because only relatively few people benefit from the economic prosperity. This suggests that governments should consider implementing policies to ensure more equal distribution of wealth. The happier people are, the more productive they are likely to become, thus leading to improved economic outcomes at the individual and national levels.
The debate about the relationship between wealth and happiness continues, with arguments for and against richer countries being happier. However, it is clear that wealth alone isn’t enough to make us happy. The effect of income inequality on happiness shows that happiness is a social responsibility. We need to remember the positive effects of generosity, altruism, and building social connections. Perhaps our focus should be less on how much money we have, and more on how we use it.
12. According to the passage, Easterlin Paradox refers to ________.
A. the fact that the more money, the happier people will feel
B. the suggestion that money should be given the top priority
C. the question how economic outcomes are distributed nationwide
D. the opinion that higher income doesn’t necessarily generate happiness
13. The underlined word “satiation” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. satisfaction
B. controversial
C. central
D. sensitive
14. What is the major reason for people’s unhappiness related to money
A. Money is not enough.
B. Money is not fairly distributed.
C. Rich people are richer.
D. Unequal money paid for equal work.
15. Which of the following might be the best title of this passage
A. It’s all relative
B. Easterlin Paradox
C. The economic of happiness
D. Raising income, raising happiness

(2020 江西名师联盟一模)It was the late 1930s, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake, five years ago. Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our soles(鞋底)were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have “French toast” ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those times. Rent was 25 dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be evicted right after Christmas on the first of January.
Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund from social services. The inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn’t find any, he issued the cheque to Mum. Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the 25 dollars to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling snow, and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. Boots that weren’t patched, boots with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of 23 dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was excited, as I hurried up the road to the shoe store, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for Christmas goodies. I knew that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.

第一节 One possible version:
Dear Manager,
I’m writing to tell you something that happened to me.
Last week I bought an English dictionary from your online bookstore to help me with my English study. It cost me 25 dollars. But unfortunately when I received it, I found it beyond my satisfaction. There were quite a few misprints and some of the pages were even missing!
I’d like my money back or at least you can change this dictionary for another copy! Personally you should have checked the dictionary to make sure that the dictionary was of high quality before you delivered it to your customer.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 One possible version:
As I continued walking I began to reconsider my plan. I was feeling a strange sense of guilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots while my mother was home in tears. She would be trying to explain to us why there were no presents. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. I realized that 25 dollars I had worked so hard for went a long way towards lights, decorations and a turkey. After finishing shopping, I went home.
With great excitement and tears in my eyes, I knocked on the door. I could hardly wait to see my mother’s face! When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there, dumbfounded. Holding back the tears, I said, “Merry Christmas!” That day I got enough hugs and kisses from Mum to last two lifetimes.
