Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French writer best known for his adventure stories. Often called the “Father of Science Fiction”, Verne described in his stories technology and inventions years before they became realities.

本句中的as if=as though意为“似乎; 好像”, 其从句用了虚拟语气。
as if引导从句的用法
as if引导的从句,
(1)若表示与现在事实相反的假设, 从句谓语动词用过去时;
(2)若表示与过去事实相反的假设,
从句谓语动词用过去完成时;
(3)若表示与将来事实相反的假设, 从句谓语动词用“would/could/might+动词原形”。
(2)如果as if/though引导的从句所表示的内容与事实相符, 则使用陈述语气。
(3)as if/though引导的从句可用省略形式, 后面直接跟名词、不定式、形容词、介词短语或分词。
*He acted as if nothing had happened.
他表现得就像什么都没发生似的。
*She left the room hurriedly as if (she was) angry.
她匆忙离开房间就好像她生气了。
*He stood up as if to leave. 他站起来似乎要离开。
