本节课是高中英语第二册Unit 5 Human and Nature的第三课Race to the Pole，课型是阅读课，介绍了两组人同时出发去南极途中所发生的事情，并讲述了探险过程中是如何面对困难的。通过本节课的学习，让学生了解人类与南极的关系以及在面对困难时如何克服。
语言技能目标
学生能够借助关键词，在理解文章大意的基础上，找出段落主题句，完成读前问题；
用所学的词汇和语言的对课文进行复述。
语言知识目标
能够正确运用以下单词和短语：sledge, ambition, hopeless, continent, disaster, have difficulty (in) doing sth, be similar to, spirit, bravery等；
能正确使用后缀。
文化意识目标
了解不同文化背景下对南极探索的理解；
正确认识南极探索的挑战。
情感态度目标
了解南极探险所面临的困难，正确认识人类对大自然的探索，从而进一步意识到如何做到人与自然和谐相处。
重点
（1）如何使用地道的英语表达南极探险；
（2）正确理解并适当运用词类后缀。

（1）能用得体的英语表达南极探险者的心情及面对困难时的决心；

Step-1 Warming Up & Lead-in Warm-up Teacher first show some pictures about Antarctica and try to let students to discuss the following questions: What are the temperature like How would you dress to deal with the weather How would you get food Are these civilisations close by Lead-in Teacher will give students some backgrounds about Antarctica and pictures on Page36 in textbook and let students to discuss the following questions: What difficulties do you think explorers may face there What preparations do they need to make 任务型活动：锻炼学生材料收集、整理能力，同时也激发同学们热情和参与课堂的积极性。 5分钟
Step-2 Pre-reading Here is an account of two teams’ journey to the South Pole. Teacher should remind students of using skimming skills to get the general meaning of the whole text. And give students a few moments to skim the explorers’ accounts and underline the general sentence and topic. 紧扣上一环节的讨论，教师引导学生如何找到文章主题，并运用该方法，以此激发学生的兴趣，更容易地导入文章主题。 5分钟
Step-3 Fast-reading Read the text quickly and find out when the two journeys began and what happened to the two teams. 通过读前找到主旨句和快速阅读，有助于学生对文章主旨大意的掌握，进而帮助学生更好理解文章而进入精读环节。 5分钟
Step-4 Deep-reading Read again and complete the information about the two exploration teams. Then talk about the journeys based on your notes. Summarise the change of feelings on Scott’s teams return journey. Give reasons for the words or phrases you have chosen. Read the underlined sentences from Scott’s diary and letter. Work out the implied meaning of these sentences from the context. Write your inferences below. Step-5 Post-reading Activity-1 Think and Share Would you say that Scott and his team are losers Why or why not How do you understand Amunden’s saying about Scott’s death “Captain Scott left a record, for honesty, sincerity, for bravery, for everything that makes a man” Activity-2 Focus on Language: Suffixes Complete the Word Builder. Then use the correct form of the words in the Word Builder to complete the sentences below. Activity-3 Express Yourself Read the sentences from Scott’s dairy and letter again. Discuss what he was trying to say in each one. Highlight the parts that impress you most and explain why. Step 6 Homework Search online the main events in China’s Antarctica exploration. Why do people try to explore the toughest part of the Earth 有助于学生进一步自助学习，了解更多课本以外的知识。
