活动一:感知与注意
1. Write “Greenlife” on the blackboard, and ask students talk about it.
2. Ask students to look at the poster and answer the following questions.

What does NPO stand for
Suggested answers: The event is about a public speaking event on environmental protection. The presenter might talk about Yi Jiefang and a non-profit organIsation. NPO stands for the term “non-profit organization”.
3. Explore more information about “non-profit organization”.
What does “NPO” mean
Suggested answers: “NPO” is an organisation that does not aim to make money but focuses on a good cause.
4. Ask students to discuss the question.

活动二:获取与梳理
1. Listen for understanding.
(1) Ask students to read the Skill Builder. Let them know that taking notes is important when they are listening.
(2) Ask students to listen to the first part of the presentation and answer the questions.

Suggested answers: Her 22-year-old son died in a road accident. For Yi Jiefang, life seemed to lose all meaning. She remembered how concerned her son had been about the sandstorms and deserts in northern China. He had said that he wanted to plant trees there after he graduated.
(3) Ask students to listen to the second part of the presentation and take notes.
The early days of NPO-Greenlife ________. Yi Jiefang went to ________ Inner Mongolia and saw ________ with little agriculture. So Yi Jiefang ________ to ________ in the region over ________ and the government agreed. Although the first trees were ________, her team continued planting more trees. Now the trees have ________.

(4) Ask students to listen to the third part and complete the quotes written on the headstone of Yi Jiefang’s son. Encourage them to read the quotes aloud and explain the meaning of the quotes in their own words.

2. Focus on function: asking questions.
(1) Have students listen to the Q & A session and answer the questions.

Suggested answers: Her son’s wishes gave Yi the strength to rebuild her life. To make the desert green was her son’s dream. To make his dream come true is the meaning h of her life. Huge changes have been seen there. Grassland has gradually started to grow from the sandy soil. Villagers can even grow watermelons now. And the local river, which used to be dry, now runs and is full of fish to catch. In 2013, Yi began a new project to plant more trees in Inner Mongolia. This time she chose the county where many of the sandstorms that affect Beijing start.
(2) Ask students to read and complete the Talk Builder.

Ask students to imagine they have a chance to meet Ms Yi Jiefang. Students work in pairs to prepare some questions that they would like to ask her. Encourage students to role-play an interview.

活动五:想象与创造
Ask students to search for information about Ant Forest and discuss it.
Related information:
Alibaba’s Alipay announced that 100 million trees had been planted in the country’s deserts as the number of its Ant Forest users reached 500 million.
The nearly 1.4 million mu (about 93, 300 hectares) of forests had been planted as part of a non-profit project to combat desertification and promote a low-carbon lifestyle started by Ant Financial,See Foundation and China Green Foundation in August 2016.
Alipay users who engage in low-carbon acts like renting a bike,taking the bus,or simply walking are rewarded with “green energy” that is used to “water” virtual trees in their mobile phones. And when a virtual tree grows up, a real tree will be planted by Ant Forest. This function is embedded in the Alipay app.
This way of planting trees was recognized on October 23, 2018 by the National Afforestation Committee as a means for citizens to fulfill their obligations of planting trees.
In February 2019, Hema Fresh, Alibaba’s new retail-based supermarket chain, also joined in the Ant Forest scheme, allowing its customers to gain “green energy” if they choose not to use plastic bags while shopping.
The Chinese government attaches great importance to the protection and restoration of ecosystems and afforestation projects have been implemented for decades. China aims to increase the forest cover to 23 percent by 2020, and to 26 percent by 2035.
A new study using data from NASA satellites shows that the Earth becomes greener as a result of ambitious tree-planting programmes in China and India.
【设计意图】通过谈论日常生活中每天都能接触的“蚂蚁森林”,反思个人与环境的关系,谈论个人在环境保护中起的作用,从而鼓励学生加入环境保护中来。
