so that & so… that…
1) so that引导目的状语从句,可与in order that 换用。从句位于句中常用情态动词may/might, can/could, should, would 连用,意为“以便,为了,使能够”。
e.g. They got up early so that they could catch the early bus.
为了能赶上早班车,他们早早就起床了。
2) so that也可以用来引导结果状语从句,意为“因此,结果”,这时其从句中的谓语动词不与情态动词连用。所表示的结果往往同主句有因果关系;
3) so…that…所表示的结果往往表明so后面形容词或副词的程度。
e.g.He didn’t plan his time well, so that he didn’t finish his work in time.
