[2022·河南省实验中学一模]
My brother and I were driving home together and started talking about something interesting. Without paying attention, my brother took a wrong turn.
Unfortunately, the wrong turn took us toward a bridge and we had no way of turning back. My brother had to pay to cross. He was clearly frustrated by the mistake and the needless waste of $4.
As we drove forward, my brother noticed an old black Mustang(福特野马汽车) by the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He had a flat tire.
My brother helped him change the flat tire. We started getting to know the young man who was from a rough neighborhood nearby. He said that this had been a bad week for him. Earlier he had gotten into a minor(不严重的) car accident, and now he had this flat on his way home from work. But he called us “a breath of fresh air” and kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn’t come along. After we had finished the job, he thanked us again and pulled out $20 to try to give it to us. “No,” my brother said. “We were never supposed to even get on that bridge. We took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. It was to help you. Thank you for turning our mistake into an opportunity to serve. ”
What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his annoyance over the mistake into positive energy. He was able to see a chance to help(which I totally missed) even in an otherwise negative situation, which can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.

When we were kids, learning polite expressions was important. Our parents taught us to say “thank you” when we received help, and to say “please” when we needed a favor from others. But would you say “thank you” and “please” to a digital(数码的) assistant
Recently, Amazon announced it had added new features(特点) to its smart assistant Alexa. One of the developments — a politeness feature — draws some parents’ attention. Their children keep forgetting their manners because they have become used to shouting orders at their Echo, a smart speaker similar to Alexa.
When kids ask Alexa to solve a math problem using the word “please”—such as “Alexa, please tell me what 5 plus 7 is” — Alexa will not only give the correct answer, but also give the following response “Thanks for asking so nicely”.
However, some people believe kids shouldn’t thank a machine, as children can tell the difference between machines and humans. But then again, we don’t usually talk aloud to a fridge or an ATM, either.
“I ask Siri to turn on the lights or set an alarm in the same natural language that I use in day-to-day life,” commentator( 评论员) Chaim Gartenberg wrote on the website. “It doesn’t matter whether an Echo can hear or understand it — it matters that you say it. ”
With the increasing use of AI(artificial intelligence) , forming the habit of being polite in everyday life is becoming even more important, as the British research company ChildWise found. In January, it published a report warning that people who become used to cutting courtesies (礼貌) and giving orders to digital assistants might become rude when dealing with others.
Traditionally, we can tell how nice people are by watching how they interact with a waiter. In a similar way, even if the AI or digital assistant doesn’t care about it, other people around us are going to experience how we interact with it.

Complain(抱怨) Politely
Not everything goes the way you want it to. You may go to a restaurant and order a nice meal. But your order is wrong or not cooked properly. You may buy a product that breaks the next day. 36.________ However, if you speak angrily to people, they will become defensive(自卫的) . Then they are less likely to help you. A more effective(有效的) way to get what you want is to stay calm.
Use polite language and a friendly tone of voice. Start with phrases, such as “I’m sorry to bother you, but... ” or “Excuse me, but could you... ” For example, “I’m sorry to bother you, but I ordered potato soup, not vegetable.” Phrasing your complaint as a question also helps. 37. ________ “Could you help me I just bought this phone case yesterday, but it’s cracked.”
38. ________There is no faster way to make someone defensive than by blaming them. Use the phrase, “I know this isn’t your fault, but...” or “There has been a misunderstanding.” 39. ________ Blaming people isn’t as important as getting a problem fixed!
There are honest mistakes, but at times someone may try to take advantage of you. In that case, don’t say, “Hey! You’re trying to cheat me!” Instead, use the phrase, “I understood that...” For example, “I understood that the service charge was included in the price.” Then give the person a chance to answer.
If you don’t get what you want with polite conversation, ask to speak to a manager or a supervisor. 40. ________
根据材料内容, 从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项, 使文章意思通顺、内容完整。
A. When trying to correct a problem, don’t blame(责备) the person you’re talking to. B. People like to be asked rather than told. C. But usually, you’ll find that polite words and a smile will resolve a situation. D. These kinds of experiences make you want to complain. E.
