Like politicians who adopt accents to appeal to local audiences, the producers of potato chips vary the wording on their bags to convey their products’ authenticity in different ways to different buyers.
Actually, whether you eat an ordinary chip or the priciest chip, consumers of all social classes value the product that they think is the most authentic. To analyse class identity in food marketing,Josh Freedman, who graduated from Stanford, began a project by marching into grocery stores and photographing the language on potato chip bags, which attracted the stares of employers.
His analysis shows that fans of economical brands can be reached with words indicating the chips are from “the same recipe that your grandmother used to make”.“Authenticity for consumers of inexpensive chips is rooted in tradition and home,”said Freedman. The wording on inexpensive chips might show off well-known locations,or play upon the traditions of the company and its unique founder. For expensive potato chips,on the other hand, authenticity is realized through foreign or handmade processes and ingredients(原料成分) that are described as natural. The ingredients list may include “sea salt”.
Freedman also found that advertisers attempting to draw consumers to expensive chips use rare words, more text and more complex grammar, along with more mentions of health. It’s consistent with the tendency for people with higher incomes to be well-educated and health-conscious.And expensive chips mention not only what they are,but also what they are not.The bags might call the chips unique or the finest and they are—unlike other chips—not fried, not fat.
Now Freedman can no longer look at restaurant menus without thinking about their careful wording.“It made me more aware of how we use language,”he said.“But the project hasn’t changed my snacking habits.I still don’t eat that many potato chips.”
1. Josh Freedman took photos in grocery stores to________.
A.search for inexpensive potato chips
B.attract the stares of employers
C.learn how to design food brands
D.make a study of food product package
2. Which may appear on the inexpensive chip bags according to the text?
A.An old family recipe for you.
B.Want a new product?Go for it!
C.All natural,no fry and no fat at all.
D.Hand-made and sea salt contained, like it?
3. It can be inferred from the text that Josh Freedman________.
A.is a professional food producer
B.likes buying cheap potato chips
C.is interested in marketing psychology
D.seldom eats outside in restaurants
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.The study of social classes.
B.Class identities on food products.
C.Advertisements in food marketing.
D.Different ways to increase products.

Chocolate is so delicious, smooth and creamy. It’s been described as one of life’s little pleasure.Dieters can keep chocolate in their diets by just working it into their total calorie count. The average chocolate bar is 250 calories.
Most of the bad opinions of chocolate are based on the fact that it contains fat and caffeine. The level of fat in chocolate is due to the presence of cocoa butter, which increases blood cholesterol (胆固醇) levels. On the other hand,it also contains something that lowers the risk of heart disease!A regular cup of coffee contains 130 to 150 milligrams of caffeine while one ounce of chocolate contains only six milligrams. At this rate,it’s better to give up coffee than chocolate.
In a study by Holland’s National Institute of Public Health and Environment, chocolate was found to have four times the antioxidants(抗氧化剂) of green tea.Catechins(茶酸) are powerful antioxidants in the prevention of cancer and heart disease. One hundred milligrams of black tea contain 13.9 milligrams of catechins. The same weight of dark chocolate has 53.5 milligrams of catechins.
I know what you’re going to say,“What about chocolate and bad tooth?” No problem.Researchers found that the cocoa butter in chocolate coats the teeth while it’s being eaten, making it one of the least likely snacks to cause bad tooth.
If you’re afraid you might be a chocoholic and won’t be able to stop at just one bar or reasonable handful, buy chocolate in smaller personal-sized packs rather than large bars or bags. You can still enjoy chocolate.
5. The first paragraph mainly tells us that________.
A.it is really bad to eat chocolate in your life
B.chocolate is much better than anything else
C.it is a pleasure for you to have chocolate
D.chocolate contains too many calories
6. Chocolate is better than coffee because________.
A.chocolate can help lower the rate of heart disease
B.coffee contains much less caffeine
C.chocolate includes fat and caffeine
D.coffee helps you keep awake all along
7. According to the study,________.
A.black tea contains more catechins than chocolate
B.chocolate contains as much catechins as black tea
C.green tea is not good to keep your body strong
D.chocolate contains much more catechins than black tea
8. Which of the following can be the best title?
A.Chocolate Is Really Perfect
B.The Benefits of Chocolate
C.You’d Better Give up Green Tea
D.Coffee Is Really Harmful

The Olympic medal ceremonies have already begun. But some athletes hardly disguise their disappointment when silver and not gold is hung around their necks. The British judo silver medallist Neil Adams calls his two from the 1980s “loser’s medals”.
Until four years ago, they were in a box at the back of a cupboard. His wife then had them framed for his 50th birthday and they are now up on the wall.
Adams feels proud when he looks at them, but his thoughts quickly turn to “what ifs”.“I wouldn’t change much,” he adds. And he wouldn’t need to.Gold was within his grasp twice, but slipped away by a narrow margin on the judo mat.
“The losses at the Olympic Games were the most difficult thing for me to accept,” he said.“I didn’t win the silver medal.I lost the gold.In my mind they were losses. It has taken more than 30 years to get over it.”
Mark Cavendish,Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah have never won Olympic gold, but they came into London 2012 as three of Team GB’s biggest medal hopes.Unfortunately,Cavendish suffered disappointment in the cycling road race.Neil Adams was in that same position in both the 1980 and 1984 games. However,in a career in which he collected every other judo accolade, things simply went wrong at the Olympics.
In Moscow 1980,Adams was just 21 years old and became the media focus,he was under the pressure of expectation too much.
Asked about being a favourite,Adams said,“It is hell, and about how you cope with it in the mind.It can make you afraid to win or lose and there is a difference.I was afraid to lose.Sometimes you freeze.Sometimes it takes you over.”
Adams says that he was very cautious and that when something was tactical and technical he approached it too tactically.Perhaps it’s better to go in with a ‘nothing to lose’ attitude. That might be the reason why the Olympic Games have often created surprise results.Sometimes it’s the ones who keep their cool and work the hardest who get the results.
1. The best title for the passage should be________.
A.Loser’s Medals B.Olympic Medals
C.Two Silver Medals D.Framed Medals
2. Where are Neil Adams’ silver medals now?
A.Around his neck.
B.At the back of a cupboard.
C.In a box.
D.On the wall.
3. How long did Adams keep the medals in the box?
A.More than 30 years.
B.More than 40 years.
C.More than 20 years.
D.No more than 20 years.
4. Adams always felt it a pity to win silver medals because________.
A.he was narrowly beaten by the champion
B.he didn’t try his best
C.he lacked techniques
D.he was too greedy

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Studies show farmland in Africa is often lacking in important nutrients. But researchers say a combination of farming methods may help.
Researchers wonder how to increase production without necessarily clearing more land to grow additional crops.American researchers say that can happen with greater use of an agricultural system called perenniation. It mixes food crops with trees and perennial plants—those that return year after year.
Soil scientist John Reganold says,“One of the major problems is that the soils are fairly poor in most of the regions. So how do you grow food crops on poor soils? There have to be food production systems that can build the soil and improve the yield.”
Mr.Reganold says poor soil may have resulted from years of weathering that washed away many nutrients. He says some farmers may have done more harm than good.
“They have been actually using farming practices where they’re not putting in organic matter. They’re not putting in fertilizers. They can’t afford those things. And it just runs the soil down.So they’re worsening the situation.”
The scientist says the word perenniation defines three systems that are already used in Africa. The oldest of the three is called evergreen agriculture. This is where farmers plant trees with their crops.Farmers in Africa have been doing this for sixty years, and it seems to be growing in popularity.
The method is gaining widespread use in countries such as Niger,Burkina Faso,Malawi and Zambia. The trees are planted among maize(玉米),millet or sorghum crops. They not only add nitrogen(氮) to the soil through their roots, but also through their leaves when they fall off and break down.At other times of the year, the trees can protect plants from strong sunlight.
John Reganold says he knows of one woman who has had great success with perenniation.
“She’s a grandmother in her fifties. Her name is Rhoda Mang’yana and she started using this system about twenty years ago.And her yields initially were about a ton of maize. Now with a good year she gets four tons per hectare, four times what she was getting.”

For years I wanted a flower garden, but with five children I was too busy to have one.Money was limited, and so was time.Often one of the children would want something that cost too much, and I would say,“Do you see a money tree outside?Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know.”Finally, when all five had gotten through high school and college, and had started having their own families,I started thinking again about having a garden.
However,I knew gardens cost money. And after all these years I was used to living on a pretty lean,no-frills budget.
Then, one spring morning on Mother’s Day,as I was working in my kitchen,I heard cars drive by and looked out of the window to see a new tree planted in my yard.I couldn’t believe my eyes!It was a money tree!Dollar bills were stuck all over that tree, and there was a note which read,“I owe you eight hours of digging time.Love,Marvin.”
Marvin,my first son, kept this promise, too. He dug up a nice ten-by-fifteen-foot bed for me.My other children bought me tools,a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books. We built a garden together.
That was three years ago.My garden is now very pretty, and just what I’d always wanted. When I go out to weed or tend my flowers,I don’t seem to miss my children as much as I once did.It feels as if they were right there with me.When I think about what my children have done for me,I get tears in my eyes every time.
I’m still not sure whether money grows on trees. But I know love does.

Two years ago,the Funk family of suburban Chicago adopted a Chinese baby girl who had been abandoned on a sidewalk near a Yangzhou textile factory.
Last year, halfway across the United States, the Ramirez family of suburban Miami adopted a girl who had been abandoned a week later on the same spot.
Both families named their daughters Mia.It turns out,a first name and Chinese heritage aren’t the only things the three-year-olds have in common. The girls’ mothers—Holly Funk and Diana Ramirez—met on a website for parents who had gone through international adoptions. After a lot of emails comparing photographs and biographical details,DNA testing proved the families’ suspicions:The girls are probably fraternal(亲如手足的) twins.
“I was in shock,” said Ramirez, who lives with her husband Carlos in Pembroke Pines,Florida.“Well, now this is for real.”
The Internet and Web groups revolving around international orphanages are increasingly being used to link adopted children with biological kin(亲属).The site that the Funks and Ramirezes used has a membership of 137 people, with 15 sets of twins and 7 sets of siblings whose relationships have been confirmed.
At a reunion Friday at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport,Mia Diamond Funk and Mia Hanying Ramirez shyly surveyed each other, and then reached for each other’s hand.
DNA tests establish an 85 percent probability that the girls are at least half-sisters.Scientists do not have a biological parent to test and reach a greater certainty, but given their ages and physical similarities, experts say it is likely they are fraternal twins.
Douglas and Holly Funk hope to bring their Mia to Miami in October. Both sets of parents say they are committed to staying in touch and often let the twins talk to each other on the phone.
64.Why did the girls’ mothers meet on the Internet?
A.To compare photographs of the two girls.
B.To find the girls’ biological kin.
C.To test their suspicions.
D.To enjoy the joy of adopting children.
65.Experts are still not 100 percent sure that the two girls are fraternal twins because________.
A.DNA tests are still not accurate enough
B.the two girls were born in two different families
C.the DNA of a biological parent is still missing
D.one girl was born a week later than the other
66.What Ramirez said in Paragraph 4 suggests that she________.
A.didn’t believe what had happened
B.was surprised at what had happened
C.didn’t want to accept the fact
D.was pleased with what they had done
67.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Adopted Twins Reunited After Online Chat
B.Adopted Twins Live Happily in the US

D.The Stories of Two Families

For the last couple of weeks,I had been stuck in front of my computer working on a project that was very important to me.My every waking hour was consumed by the project and although I imagined that I would feel happy after completing parts of the project,I was confused to find that instead,I was feeling rather depressed.I tried a range of methods to help cheer myself up.I had a relaxing bath, cooked a delicious meal to enjoy with my family and even watched a lighthearted movie, but to_no_avail.It was only when I turned to meditation(沉思) for a solution that the answer came to me:turn to nature!
The very next day,I grabbed my camera and a bottle of water and set off to spend a few hours walking in a nature reserve, even though it was pouring with rain.Within a couple of minutes I felt alive again. To be honest,I felt like a young school girl again and had to stop myself from hopping along the path singing,“I’m singing in the rain.”a song I used to sing when I was a child.I think as adults we often try too hard to control our inner children and as a result we restrain(限制)our own spirits, which only leads to depression and stress.
Interestingly,it has been shown that people who spend 40 minutes walking in a nature reserve have a drop in their blood pressure levels. But this does not happen when they spend a similar amount of time walking in a busy city centre.
If you feel a little low in spirit and know that you have spent too much time indoors, relax completely, remove your shoes and let your inner child come out and play.
68.The author felt depressed because she ________.
A.couldn’t consume her waking hour
B.had not seen a film for a long time
C.had not finished her work on time
D.had worked on a hard job for too long
69.The underlined part “to no avail” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”.

A.explanation B.suggestion
C.introduction D.reminder

Hello,everyone,
Now_I’ll_tell_you_something_about_our_research_project_“The_World_Food_Crisis”_on_behalf_of_our_group.As_you_know,food shortages have hit many countries in the world and even caused some unrest in some areas.
But what is the reason for the current world food crisis?First, annual world grain output declined because of climate change. Then lots of farmland has been lost due to the rapid development of industry and urbanization.
Then what should we do to deal with the problem? On the one hand,we should focus on the environmental protection and improve the ecology. On the other hand, strict measures should be taken to protect farmland.
As for me,I will call on people around me to take immediate action against the needless waste of food and energy. And for the moment,I think,we should put our heart into our own studies to get more scientific knowledge and help solve the food shortages in the future.
Thanks.
